I was the only black dude in the hood in the very early 80's who played Rush. I am so happy as a young man of color you are able to appreciate this amazing group.
LOL! I was the only white dude listening to Living Color on the way to the beach to go surfing! So kudos to both of us :) Music has no color really I guess.
I’m 61 and saw them multiple times in the 70’s and 80’s…seeing your reaction tonight makes me feel “sane” for still loving this stuff as much as I do…thank you…Respect…
I'm 57 and I didn't see them until "Power Windows". Nevertheless, I stuck with them till the end and I saw them many times after 1986. I live in deep south Texas so seeing Rush meant driving a good 5 to 6 hours.
I'm 66, and I also saw them multiple times in the 70s & 80s, and I've lived in Houston all my life. Rush is the pinnacle of great rock and roll musicianship! RIP Neil Peart ☮️✌️🇺🇸🎵🎸🎶🔥
At 60 I love watching all these youngsters falling in love with this band. It's sad to think I'll never see another live rush show. These videos fill a hole. Thanx for exploring and sharing.
Yes Brother! We've all been moved to tears by this band. It happened to my 17 y/o son ( 2112, molson amphitheatre 1997, about 2/3 mark). Alex goes into a solo and the sounds and passion coming out of Alex is Heavenly. Welcome to the family.
If anyone can emote through a guitar it is Alex Lifeson! It touches your soul. This came out in 1978 when the guys were in their mid 20's and it is based on a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had especially when they were on tour. If you listen to the studio version instead of the polka music it is Alex shredding on an acoustic guitar. I suggest Secret Touch from the Snakes and Arrows tour and Digital Man also from the Snakes and Arrows tour. Great Reaction 💜
We're always happy to welcome another member of the Rush family; I know it does my old heart good to see younger folks discover them. And not gonna lie, you comparing them to a Thanksgiving dinner is probably the best description of them that I've heard. This song was inspired by a long, disturbing dream Alex once had.
Alex is incredible & doesn't get enough credit for his playing imo. My favourite quote about this song is from him: "When I wrote the guitar parts for the song, I wasn't good enough to play them. Now I play it while sitting on the couch watching TV." You're exactly right that Rush got better with age. I saw them on this tour & they were just incredible.
Rush is the benchmark for the rest of us to catch up with. Not only musically, but everything about them makes a huge impact in our lives from how to conduct business, take care of family, doing whatever your heart tells you is right, against all odds, believing in yourself taking care of yourself and being consistent in every aspect of life to be the best YOU can be, not better than anyone else but compete with you. If you know you can do better THAN DO IT, instead of thinking well I SHOULD’VE tried harder🤯no next time I will try harder and if that doesn’t do it, try even harder next time!#RIPNEP🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎹
Yeah, these guys are the real deal. Rush are one of the most respected rock bands in the world and for good reason. They are all virtuoso musicians in their own right, with Neil, the drummer, cited as one of, if not THE greatest rock drummer of all time. A band career spanning over 4 decades, these guys are absolutely in a class of their own.
I'm not a big fan of the polka intro on this version, but I love that they don't take themselves too seriously. They definitely know how to put on a show with just 3 instruments.
60 and the memories of seeing them 4 times in my teens and then another in my 30s every time all the solos incredible, peart (the professor) getty bass god and Alex Mr smooth on the frets!!!!!!
I also would like to welcome you to the fam. I actually still remember when/where i was initiated myself. I was riding in my older neighbors willys jeep. He says hey you gotta here this, its new. Next thing i know im listening to Spirit of Radio. They rest is history. Almost a handful of concerts and 40 plus years later. My love for this band has only grown as ive matured. IMHO 3 of the best individual musicians ever together in a band. So much music from 3 guys. Its just nuts. Anyway i could go on for long time about Rush, so i better stop before i dont. 😂😂 Again thanks for the music and wonderful reaction.
This song is the benchmark of technical ability in rock music. It is an incredible piece of music. . Complicated piece. Rush was always challenging itself to be better. They nailed this!
Danny, I’ve read all the comments up to yours, all spot on but your comment is EXACTLY RIGHT!! You may have more favorite bands but there is NO MORE TALENTED, CAPABLE BAND IN ALL OF ROCK N ROLL!!
This was the first of two encores after a two and a half hour show when Geddy and Alex were 58 and Neil was 59. The next and final song was Working Man and Alex really shreds it up in that one, one of their best live videos. 😊
That intro was a gimmick just for this tour. Check out the original official music video - it's spectacular. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eK1hmDpa8bo.htmlsi=owXyzVJdfAyHgxQC
No shame, Brother... Rush can have that effect on you. This was a beautiful reaction. BTW, Dame... their rabbit-hole is deep... enjoy the journey !!! RUSH-4-Life (and beyond)😎❤
Rush is the reason I started playing bass guitar in 1982. I heard Moving Pictures in 1981, and the words & music really reached me, so I saved up some money and bought a cheap pawnshop bass. I was 16 years old and didn't have the money for an amplifier, so I just hugged the bass tight to my body and kept my head bent way over so my ears were closer to the strings, that way I could hear & feel the notes I was playing when the song was playing. Still play bass to this day, and I always make sure to play a few Rush songs in my set. My favorites to play along to are: The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, The Camera Eye, Red Barchetta, Natural Science, The Analog Kid, Leave That Thing Alone, The Necromancer, By-Tor and the Snowdog, and La Villa Strangiato. I learned a lot more Rush songs than those, but those are my favorites to play. I'm not afraid to admit, as a confident manly-man, that a lot of Rush songs make me cry, for both joy and sorrow. I love Rush so much that I used Blender 3D to make a 3-D model of their 2112 album cover art, modified with my username logo instead of the red star and circle, and I use that as my profile pic.
65 years old and a Rush fan forever. I saw them three times opening for other people and have been a fan for the whole ride. There has never been a collection of three more talented musicians that work together like this ever.
Great reaction! I suggest your next rush song be The Garden, live from the Clockwork Angels Tour. That is their swan song (the last song on their last album) before Neil passed away. It is very emotional. The musicianship is top notch, as always with Rush.
There is no point doing The Garden next there is so much music to get through before their swan song. You can't truly understand the huge emotion that comes with it, unless you do everything before and also Beyond the Lighted Stage
🤗 We all adore Live Rush & seeing this live, so late in their Career was special! 🤣 And the 'Polka Opening' was hysterical! Saw Time Machine at MSG! 😁 Memories yo! 🥰🐰
my favorite version of my favorite Rush song...I saw this tour live and this performance was a gift to Rush fans. A very difficult to perform song they wrote in their 20's they are performing in their 50's and they change it up and add new and silly elements but perform it better than they have ever performed it before almost like its too easy now. Masters of their craft at the pinnacle of their skill (at the time).
One of the great things about them was that, as good as they were, they had a great sense of humor. So that bit at the beginning, the "Mario Bros." thing? Sort of a goof on what was to come. So much fun. I saw them many times over the years and they never disappointed.
That was one of Alex's finest guitar pieces! It's emotional. That was also their first instrumental and one of the best. It was always a joy to see them perform that in concert.
You are discovering the magnificence of Rush. One of the 3 best bands ever, and 3 high-quality guys. I still can't believe they're retired and Niel has passed.
Been a Rush fan for 45 years. Graced to see them live twice. You really have to appreciate what they can do on a musicianship level. these guys are a Canadian gem. The world has gold and diamonds. Canada has Rush. I am a drummer and Neil has been a God to me. What an influence these guys have had on my life. love your reactions. keep up the good work and explore the Rush rabbithole.
Fantastic reaction! You get it. I SOsosososososososo recommend Rush's song "The Weapon" off the album Signals. Possibly my favorite of all their insane masterpieces.
Thanks for taking me up on my recommendation --- I knew you would appreciate it! Next up, The Trees and Natural Science. Both incredible songs, you will be blown away...again!
Subjective, but I think they are the greatest (my greatest). Listen to the album original, that solo has the same effect on me too, one of the best solos ever.
I discovered MY hometown boys back in 1977 and saw every tour at least once from 1980 to the end. You won't find a better combination of three virtuoso musicians with such generous respect for each other. The Rush rabbit hole is deep, dark and so absolutely amazing. Enjoy the journey and welcome to the family.
You're a pure musician yourself... that's why you understand them. I was at this show in Cleveland Ohio April 15, 2011. Best band ever!! I was fortunate enough to witness 17 live shows between 2004 to 2015.
Rush afficinados, correct me if I am wrong, but this is one of the only tours they actually played this song live. Alex did not believe he could reproduce the brilliance he lay down for the studio album, so they never played it live, until this tour. He felt he was good enough at this point in his career to do it. Seen them live 9 times, including this tour. Miss them. In my heart, they are the best at each instrument they play, some would disagree, but that is my opinion. RIP Neil, you will be forever missed.
I don't blame you one bit for shedding some tears to these three maestros. They created definitely the most beautiful and intricate music of the century. Neil's lyrics were pure poetry, and the fact that it's just the three of them producing all of that music, totally amazing. Neil will be so missed. But you know that right now he's up there jamming with both Keith Moon and John Bonham. Welcome to Rush family Dame!
Young man you’re the real deal! Obviously you “get it.” 1978 bro- that’s when the Hemisphere album came out. I’ve only seen em live 5 times but 1990 on the Presto tour in St Louis they did this one and Xanadu in the same show. I literally felt a little dizzy. A Rush show is indescribable. Bro you GOTTA check out Far Cry live from the Snakes and Arrows tour 1997- I saw em twice on that one- the 2nd time I was in the 2nd row. It’s 1000% intense and in your face for the whole 3 hours. I’ll be watchin for your react to that one!✌️
I’ve said this in every reaction channel. As a child of the late 60’s and 70’s there were several all time great rock n roll bands but two stood out as more than a band but an experience… Pink Floyd and Rush. They are just different.
Every time you listen to a Rush song with lyrics, make sure you are reading them or you may miss critical parts. Rush songs were written by and for nerds and geeks, the outcasts back in the day. I'd recommend you listen to 2112 (25 minutes of epic sci-fi).
There are several live versions of this, but this is special with the beginning starting as a Polka into one of their many great instrumental songs!!! You catch a little of Alex's goofy side with his on stage antics as he plays thru a solo he has played, what, probably 500 times, this century alone! LOL! With 19 studio albums there is a huge catalog of great RUSH music out there! Enjoy!
You nailed it. And Rush fans discover something about their music listening for decades. Especially La Villa Strangiato. Late 1970’s. Great job. I know it touched you, brother. ✊🫡
The studio version of the song starts with a really pretty acoustic guitar solo. You should listen to it on your own time. Rush is my favorite band of all time. I was lucky enough to see them twice before Neil passed away.
I’ve seen the more than 50 times. My first concert was Rush opening for KISS. They became my favorite band that night. I’ve been a drummer since I was 5 and Neil is my idol! My #2 was Buddy Rich. Look at Neil’s favorite. He did 2 records with Buddys band called burning for Buddy. Enjoy that!
If you had never been exposed to musicians of this caliber in your life, then how would you have known they existed at all? The lightbulb moment is palpable...
The polka music at the beginning was added for this tour for the 1st time. Look up Rush at the Pink Pop Festival in 1979, to get the true live version right after they made that song played live for the first time after recording it. Also another note: there is a you tube video of this song played in Boston on this tour where Alex lost his amps at the beginning of this song, it is really funny to watch how the 3 of them melded together till his amp feed was fixed.!
You should also check out the original 1978 version. This was a fun take on the song with a polka intro as they did it as an encore and they really love to inject humor into their shows whenever they can.
Bro thank you!!! I thought I was the only one who cried when I heard this and Ive heard it thousands of times!! Gets me each time!! Truly a musical masterpiece!
The best live version of this is Exit stage left from 1981. Best live guitar solo ever !!!!!!! Same show as the Xanadu version you reacted to. Trust me bro !!
Dude. I know they are the best band ever on the stage. That’s a given. Find out a little more of who they are off the stage and you will love them even more. These guys are a class act. Went out on top. Their legacy will forever grow. Take it from a 40 year fan. RIP NEIL.
There are few bands that can reach right into you and grab you by the spine. Rush is one the elite top tier bands. A few other favorites are Dream Theater, Savatage, Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult and Nightwish. They all have Very styles. They are all greater than the sum of their parts. They have all enriched my life. So much great music is out there waiting for you. To hear the really good stuff, find out who your heroes listen to. Enjoy the journey, I know I did. ✌️🖖
Dane, I suggest you to the original album version(which has an acoustic) and the first live version(which has an electric version of the same phenomenal intro). I don't think the intro is included in any other version of this song. Also, I have been a fan since I first heard them in the early seventies and this song always brings tears to my eyes - they are my very favorite band. Xanadu by Rush is also another incredible compilation
Dame, great reaction! If you do seek out earlier performances of La Villa Strangiato, here is my recommendation on which La Villa performance to choose: 1. Exit… Stage Left (live album) featuring Alex at his fastest, most precise and emotive best. There is no video for this performance, as I suspect there might have been some post overdubs, perhaps an out-of-tune instrument, but the finished recording is phenomenal. 2. Original studio version from their 1978 album Hemispheres 3. Any other live version, EXCEPT the “Official Video” of this track, which was recorded at the Pinkpop Festival in 1979, where Alex was gutting it out with a broken finger on his left hand - not at their best.
🙋🏿♀️ We are all ready for your 2112 (Twenty-One Twelve) Reaction! 😌 Toss on the headphones, chill & watch the Graphic Novel Version of the Video (off the Rush Channel). 🤯 You follow the Lyrics along by reading the pages like a graphic Novel! 🤗 Its a freaking brilliant Video & makes the story easy to follow along. 😲 Back in the day we had to use our imaginations.... 😏 imagine that..... 😁🥰🐰
Great reaction brother. This song always gets me and I’ve been listening since the ‘70s. Do yourself a favour and listen to the original cut from the Hemispheres album. The studio version is sublime…
