As a vet this video gets me emotionally everytime.. But man.. Hollywood keeps repeating itself and just making super hero movies, when there are these stories that should be told...mind boggling
@Kabuki Kitsune I remember reading that story many years ago, that would have made a great movie, but unfortunately it goes against the current narrative so it will never be made. At least within the foreseeable future.
While in training Stigler was told by his commanding officer “If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you down myself. You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” Stigler later commented “To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn’t shoot them down. “ "You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” That is a powerful statement.
@@HighlyCombustibleReacts If you really want to immerse yourself in this story, You can read the book "A Higher Call". The author was blessed to be able to interview Franz Stigler and Charlie Brown very in depth before they both passed on into the eternal skies in 2008.......
Check out the _Night Witches_ animated STORY video, by Sabaton. It's all about the FEMALE Russian bomber crews of WWII. I would link it but YT keeps deleting my posts. Make sure it's the story video like this one. 🤘😁
For some strange reason YT doesn't allow me to put a link here to the Russian TV series "Night Swallows" ( English subs) about this female unit. You can find it on the StarMediaEN channel.
This song made me buy the book "A higher call" talking about Charlies and Franz life leading up to this event. It took the writer 8 years to finish it. Definitely worth a read.
I cried too my friend. Of all the hidden stories of ww2, this is by far my favorite and to see Sabaton display it like this is beautiful. You have my sub.
@@HighlyCombustibleReacts I actually started watching you with your Lovebites reactions since they are my favorite band. But I look forward to more videos of all kinds. Best wishes brother.
As a fellow veteran (retired recently) who deployed twice to the M.E. - and as a history nerd - I completely understand your reaction to this story. Read up on the rest of the story - it's amazing. There is so much more to this story brother. Try "Night Witches" - it's another YarnHub story and video.
Thank you for your Service Steven. I appreciate you being here! Definitely looked into more of the story with this one, such an amazing story of humanity
Stiggler's commander told his men that he would execute any pilot who shot a parachuting enemy. Stiggler said that he felt that the Pub was in no different a situation.
Most important part of the lyrics "said goodbye to the cross he deserved". Franz Stigler needed only this last shootdown to get his Knights Cross, instead he has chosen humanity.
Another epic band, you cannot go wrong with Sabaton....The drummer is married to a very amazing singer from another epic band from Finland.....I love your reactions.
Like Nightwish I’m obsessed with Sabaton, they have a very deep catalog mostly their songs are on military heroics and sacrifices throughout history. There videos are incredible and they have a history channel explaining the history behind a lot of their songs! Also check out their live just as incredible. My humble suggestion is to do their history of each song thru their vids and history channel then watch live performances, Some suggestions are,Bismarck, 40-1, Attack Of The Dead Men, Winged Hussars, Price Of A Mile, Metal Machines, To Hell & Back. Saboton is not motivated politically but to try to tell with accuracy human sacrifices & heroics thru music,” Least They Will Not Be Forgotten! “Take it from a very old Metal Rock Head Saboton is the real deal. Stay Safe Rock On!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I was a teary-eyed mess by the end of this video. XD Sabaton introduced me to so many incredible stories!! I absolutely love their Night Witches one, the tale of extraordinary women who didn't let horrible equipment stop them from doing their duty. =)
First time viewer of your channel here! I'm a major Sabaton fan and I've seen this music video so many times and I was still crying along with you. It's such an amazing story that really deserves to be told. Stiegler had once been told by his commanding officer that: "If I see any of you shoot at a parachute I will personally put a bullet in you." And in his mind, with the damage that the Pub had taken, he felt that shooting it would be equal to shooting a parachute. And he knew that the plane would never make it across the anti-air line at the shore so he placed his plane in escort formation with the pub to stop the soldiers on the ground from shooting it down. Like you said, an act of humanity in the midst of war. I think many people tend to look at the whole of the german army in WWII as evil nazis, not realising that the common soldiers were just regular people, fighting for their country, many barely even knowing what the war was even about. Loved your reaction, and seeing just how much the story and the song touched you. I'm subbing and checking out your other content and looking forward to more Sabaton!
Thanks for the sub and the extremely kind words Tiny Lia. I truly appreciate the information about Stiegler too! Much love for being here to share the journey!
@@HighlyCombustibleReacts *“If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you down myself. You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.”* As a fighter pilot, you have one job, and one job only - *prevent* enemy bombers from attacking. There is nothing to be gained from simple killing. And Franz Stigler deserves all the credit for remembering his humait in that one, crucial moment.
Many says that sabaton is a racist patriotic band that has wrong message in the text. Am a swede and most music of sabaton is chilling and emotional if you know the story behind the song. and this song just made me have tears in my eyes. Ive seen the full documentary of this "mircle" and it's mind blowing how a German speared an b17. and it's right. war is stupid
Literally no one says this in sweden tho, this is made up. Listening to any of their songs literally tells you that they're talking about the reality of war and telling stories, not promoting fascism or nationalism. ( Patriotism and nationalism are different things, you are confusing the two terms, patriotism is not negative in any sort of way) I'm from sweden and I'm so far left leaning that my nose is crooked to the left.
Flying Fortress was a very apt name, they seemed to fly on forever! Amazing way to pay tribute to the lesser known stories of heroism and humanity among the carnage. Sabaton usually delivers.
I can really see your reaction when the video ends and you try to hold back your tears and as my grandfather said, a man who shows no emotions is not a man and as I always says the best history teacher´s in the world
You should react to Sabaton - Fields of Verdun (Official Music Video) and you got to watch it to the very end because there's some text at the end of the video.
I had the luck of having a great and passionate history teacher. He showed us both sides of the coin and wasn't afraid of thinking out of the box of the so called textbooks.
I can watch this video three times in a row and I will cry all three. Not having served in the armed forces, but in law enforcement... and seeing humanity in those who are painted as the enemy, seeing humanity, yourself and your friends in those who would in other circumstances do you harm... being able to help those who never would expect it from you... it's such a worthy goal, for anyone serving. It will not remove the life and death situations soldiers have faced, and will face, but it may let our humanity live on throughout all those sacrifices.

Franz stigler had an amazing and interesting combat tour fighting from Africa in 1942 and going to Italy and France. One time along this journey he encountered a soviet pilot who has been hit and trying to eject but couldn’t and then the plane caught fire and stigler could see the face of the pilot scared as he’s being burned alive and stigler (or it was someone in his squadron) had no choice but to shoot down him to spare him a painful death. “A higher calling”
Fantastic reaction. You are in for a treat, they have a lot of emotional songs that focus on heroes from all sides that deserves to be remembered and that we dont hear about in our history classes. If you liked the animation story I can recommened the one about the russian Night Witches Edit: Saw that someone else have already recommended it in an earlier comment, but its really good so I do it too .. :)
Our history teacher was a big Sabaton fan and when this song was released in 2014, he researched the story behind it and took it into our lessons. At that time I was already a Nightwish Hardcore fan and was really thrilled when Floor married Hannes a little later. Since my dad fell in Afghanistan in 2018, I just can't hear Sabaton and 'their' stories anymore - the emptiness in me is just too big for that.
Yet another great band you found. Great live band. Make sure to check their second channel: Sabaton History where they explain the historical background to their songs.
Your reaction Sir was incredible to the song, the video and the amazing true story of Sabaton's " No Bullets Fly ". It's my favourite song of my favourite band Sabaton. Serving Military Forces don't start wars, it's the stupid politicians and governments that cause wars and conflicts. Thank you Sir for your reaction to this video. Take care and stay safe mate. 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Some other very beautiful yet also tragic songs from Sabaton include Hearts of Iron, Price of a Mile, Cliffs of Gallipoli, and Flanders Fields. All very beautiful but oh my god I feel like crying because them a lot lol. If you ever watch these songs please do watch the Sabaton History videos on these songs too. Those vids provide the story and history of what the band sings about :)
Another great Sabaton one is "The Last Battle" about the battle of Castle Itter. American Soldiers with a Sherman tank, French political Prisoners, German Army soldiers and a Former SS officer fighting against the SS in the final days of the war.
great reation m8. i read in comments alot of great song on Sabaton. so i only add one that i dident se. The Final Solution. think there is a text video of it. its a very dark song but a great song from Sabaton about something that should never been forgoten about. keep up the great reation :)
Franz stigler was certainly the only german with a heart to show mercy and had a lot of honor he has certainly earned my respect theres no honor shooting down a plane that cant defend it self to kill or shoot down some one it must be honor and a challenge in it its not honorabel if it wasn't a challange and thats a fact Fly with Honor Fight with Honor Kill with Honor and Die with honor thats a true pilot and soilder honor is one of the most important things in War you cant call your self pilot or a soilder if you dont have honor at heart
I feel you brother. This video always make tears of my eyes. Good reaction. If you like Sabaton, take a look for Bismark, Fields of Verdun or Night Witches.
If you think it's amazing how they stayed in the air while heavily damaged, you should see how they kept them working. Today's safety regulators for planes would faint at what they did. Some of those planes held together on nothing more than a few feet of wire fencing and a prayer
Wow this is amazing! I never knew this story. Please react to 82nd all the way by sabaton, it’s about a man from Tennessee (my state) and you’re right! Many North Koreans that have escaped have met Americans and love them, because we all just want to be friends. ❤️
My favorite Sabaton song, and the one I can most relate to. I live near Bremen (the place they bombed) and Oldenburg (where they almost crashed), and my Grandpa was a AA-guner at the Atlantikwall, in the Netherlands.
I didn't follow your channel, but that smile when you realised that the fighter pilot spared his enemy's live showed what really means to be a soldier.
great reaction! If you really want to go down the Sabaton rabbit-hole, I would recommend these: (These are all from the Sabaton Channel, and they never block videos so it's safe to use) [live at Woodstock 2012]: 40:1 and Uprising [Great Tour Live Videos]: En Livstied I Krieg (make sure to turn subtitles on), Red Baron, Swedish Pagans, Primo Victoria, Fields of Verdun, Devil Dogs & Angels Calling [Lyric videos]: Attack of the dead men, In Flanders Fields, 82nd All the way, Sparta, Shiroyama and The lost betallion [Music Video's]: Bismarck, Livgardet (make sure to turn subtitles on), Fields of Verdun, Rourke's Drift, Screaming Eagles, Uprising & Seven Pillars of wisdom [Animated History Video's]: Night Witches (not animated music video's, the animated history/story video's) [Covers]: Kingdom Come - Deliverance and I'm sure people told you but in case, Sabaton have another channel (Sabaton History Channel) where they do a deep dive into the history behind the songs with Indy Nidell.
That ball turret on the bomber model required both your spine and balls to be made of solid steel in order to man. That has to be among the absolute worst jobs in WW2 due the risks involved and the manner of death if you’ll have if you couldn’t escape in time.😳 While the turret was retractable, you had to have 1-2 other men help you out of the claustrophobic chamber (which sucked for the man inside if nearly everyone else was dead or incapacitated), and if that wasn’t bad enough, if you couldn’t be retracted and exit in time before a landing, you were absolutely, positively, 100% f*cked. By the way, the parachute was by the exit/entrance of the chamber. So yeah, the ball turret gunner on those planes had the highest risk of mortality than the rest of the crew, and bomber mortality rates in general were already high. That’s because they were usually ‘dead on sight’ targets. The turrets helped defend them, but they NEEDED a good size escort to have any success in their missions, whether they came back alive or not. There’s also a grisly poem from a WW2 vet about how the gunner generally looks upon death, and you can find it just by googling ‘ball turret gunner poem’. It doesn’t sugar coat anything nor uses euphemisms, it directly tells you what happens. Beware if you’re squeamish and get sick easily.😔
I really enjoyed your reaction to this song. I just love seeing people find bands that I love and watching them enjoy that music. I my opinion you can't go wrong with a single sabaton song. Sure, there are some that are chatchier or more enjoyable for a person to watch, but every song has such a good story to it. I will be sure to check out your next reactions to sabaton no matter what it is.
My absolut favorite is A Lifetime of War or as it's spelled in my language En Livstid I Krig. Every time I listen to this song I get so emotional because it's so Epic. But for you that isn't a Swede turn on the caption.
It wwas the last year of gymnasium for me in Sweden and then we got to se a documentary that was like this and we learned so much from it and actually remembered it because it was like a short movie
the image of Stiegler saluting and the banking away... knowing it would be the last time they saw each other for 50 years... its brings me to tears every time. war brings out the worst in humanity, but it also brought out some of the best.
Hi again! I'm SOOO HAPPY to see you cry out of compation. It makes you soo loveable. And you are a veteran aswell. WOW, you are going to appriciate Sabaton and theire homage to all the soldiers they write songs about. They take no ones side in any song. They only want to honor soldiers and describe battles. You're in for a treat!! I suggest that you att least do, 40:1 (forty to one) from their live performance in Warzaw ( Woodstock in Poland). Do a LITTLE research before what it's a homage for. And also the animated story about the all female airsquadron. It's called, Night Witches. MUCH LOVE from me!
DS I appreciate that. Thank you for the kind words. I can't wait to get into more. It was like the best history lesson EVER! Thanks for always being here, truly!
@@HighlyCombustibleReacts You are becoming my favorit reactor. It's for your honesty. Honest reactions, honest to us and most of all... Honest with your feelings! Much (deserved) Love!
Sorry for correcting you, but actually the Woodstock festival has taken place in the town of Kostrzyn nad Odrą near the border to Germany since 2004, not in Warzaw.
genau da 6:05 fang ich auch immer an zu heuln......das Video ist unglaublich wie es diese Story erzählt. Hoffe das sie niemals vergessen wird. Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland.
I really enjoyed your reaction, so fullhearted. I have been a Sabaton fan for over ten years and I always like watching ppl discovering this awsome band. As stated by comments here before me, you can never go wrong with picking a song, but there are som epic live performances out. En livstid i krig live Göteborg 2020 (its in Swedish so put caps on) Swedish pagans live Wacken 40:1 live from woodstock Uprising woodstock. I will subscribe and follow your Journey.
//the last "Gentlemans war" where it was... you fought well.. now leave the battlefield... this B-17 wasn't a threat .. and on the other hand.. where is the glory in shooting down a defenseless, heavily damaged aeroplane? Yes honour and humanity kicks in.. This plane had fought well, and lost, why shoot it down ?
SFMF, howsit my brother? Loved this. Franz' act of bravery and mercy saved his soul. His first squadron commander had taught him you don't shoot helpless enemies, and if he heard of any of his gruppen that had, he would shoot them himself. His words "It's not for the enemy. It's for your soul. " Mad respect. Semper Fidelis toall those who fought in all wars past ,present, and future.
Another great one is "Red Baron" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1snEYPg8TXs.html . They have so many great songs about military history that it is difficult to list them all because it would be a very long list. OK, here are some more "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" about Lawrence of Arabia, "Ghost Division" about the German 7th Panzerdivision which got its nickname ("Division Phantom") by French soldiers during the invasion of France (they did a great live performance for this one in 2012), "40-1" about a Polish unit during the German invasion of Poland at the beginning of WW2 (great live performance for this one too from 2012), "82nd all the way", "White Death" or "Swedish Pagans" (there is a great live performance from Wacken 2019).
I know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere in the skies above Those that I fight I do not hate Those that I guard I do not love..... An Irish Airman Foresees His Death W.B. Yeats
As a combat vet. The hardest thing to keep alive in war. Is your humanity. Especially after seeing your brothers taking their last breathe. Sad to think. Once story became public. Stigler received letters from Germany calling him a traitor. Then also from his Canadian neighbors calling him a Nazi thug.
Yet. Adolf Galland, greatest ace of the Luttwaffe and if I remember correctly disciple of Stigler when He was in training called him to ask about the story. When Franz told him his answer was: "Well. That would have been typical of you Stigler"
If you love history and these anime versions by Sabaton then next is Night Witches (all women bomber group of the Russian Air Force during WW II) (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5YPo8zDkvy4.html). Another amazing story of history but not like a dusty book, told about the people who lived it and are long forgotten to history but not to Sabaton!!!
