They are the best warhistory teachers in the world. Especially because of the fact that they don't take sides. You are doing Americas children a big favour if you can get your friends to play Sabotonvideos in the classrooms! Go for it! Much love

Battleships of that time were monsters designed to deliver and take an absolute beating. I don't remember how many torpedos on top of the thousands of shells Bismarck took in that engagement, but he still stayed afloat and had to be scuttled by the crew. But yeah, when a capital ship was sunk back then, thousands of men would usually go down with it. RIP.

HMS Dorsetshire fired the final torpedoes, 2 in one side and 2 into the other (although only one of these last 2 actually went off), and rescued some survivors. They had to leave because they thought there was a U-boat in the area. They were right. U-78 rescued some more survivors after the Brits left.

Sorry for this Wall of text :) In the beginning of the Video, you can hear the Radio i, when the are driving is talking about How the Bismarck have blown the "The might cruiser Hood" That lead to the British Navy got the message that Bismarck must be destroyed at all costs and lead to Battle of The Denmark Strait. The Kriegsmarine was Nazi Germanys Navy. The Video was made with help from the company behind "World of Tanks" that needed some material to their game "World of Warships". And yes Sabaton really played on a boat in the "middle of nowhere". "From Wiki" (just a short version). Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched in February 1939. Work was completed in August 1940, when she was commissioned into the German fleet. Bismarck and her sister ship Tirpitz were the largest battleships ever built by Germany, and two of the largest built by any European power. In the course of the warship's eight-month career under its sole commanding officer, Captain Ernst Lindemann, Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, lasting 8 days in May 1941, codenamed Rheinübung. The ship, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was to break into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. At the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the battlecruiser HMS Hood initially engaged Prinz Eugen, probably by mistake, while HMS Prince of Wales engaged Bismarck. In the ensuing battle Hood was destroyed by the combined fire of Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, which then damaged Prince of Wales and forced her retreat. Bismarck suffered sufficient damage from three hits to force an end to the raiding mission. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, heading for occupied France to effect repairs, Bismarck was attacked by 16 obsolescent Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship's steering gear inoperable. In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was severely damaged during a sustained engagement with two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, was scuttled by her crew, and sank with heavy loss of life. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. The wreck was located in June 1989 by Robert Ballard, and has since been further surveyed by several other expeditions.. All Sabaton songs are about historical events, mainly Battles, Heroes/ Act of Heroism / Famous last stands etc. You should really check out their History Channel, The have a Historian (Indy Neidell) talking about the story behind their songs, and Indy is really amazing storyteller and they do have a video about Bismarch and how this Video was made) . As someone have mentioned Bismarck was most likely Skattled(sunk) by her own crew because it went down nose first Eyewitness testimonies are quite uniform about that.

I've heard it said that the fishing boat captain is the son of the last survivor of the Bismarck (explaining all the memorabilia in the office) and that the father passed about a year before the video was made. If you watch in the video, the officer on the Bismarck engraves their position inside the lid of that compass, then gives the compass to the young kid... when the Brits pull him out of the water, he's got the compass in his hand... then you see the fishing boat captain holding the compass.

As a US veteran, may I suggest you react to the following Sabaton songs: "Screaming Eagles", official music video (This is the story of the 101st Airborne at the battle of the bulge). "To Hell And Back", official music video (This is the story of the medal of honor winner Audie Murphy's battle with PTSD). "The Lost Battalion", Maciej Cisek Fan Video. (This is the story of part of the US 77th division in WW1, that got isolated by the germans in the Argonne forest). "Devil Dogs", Music Video. (This is the story of how the US Marines earned the moniker "Devil Dogs" in WW1). "82nd All The Way", Official lyrics video. (This is the story of sergeant York and the 82nd airborne in WW1) "The Last Battle", Official lyric video. (This is the story about how American and German soldiers fight of SS soldiers to save French prisoners at the end of WW2). To get the full experience from these awesome songs, I recommend that you first watch the corresponding history video on the Sabaton History Channel. Enjoy!

I did learn this in school and at home. My father was RAN WW2. My mentor, many years later, was the nephew of one of the few survivors from HMS Hood. I think Joakim was pounding his leg to make sure it was still there - the guys froze making this video! The real Bismarck was accompanied for a while by the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. After the war, as USS Prinz Eugen, after months of neglect, the ship was nuked TWICE... and did not sink until after more months of neglect! The Germans made tough ships!
@ralfklonowski3740
@ralfklonowski3740 Год назад
So we did. And Prince Eugen is still out there in the Pacific where he capsized, partly sticking out of the water. Our "Lucky Ship" If a voyage to the remote Pacific is not for you, there is an easier way to see at least a part of the Prinz: Visit the German Navy memorial (Marineehrenmal) in Laboe near Kiel on the coast of the Baltic. The propeller in front of it is one of Prinz Eugen's, removed for this purpose in the 1970's, I believe.

@@ralfklonowski3740 I did see the propellor in 1984. Dad took me to see it. He was impressed as HMAS Australia was nothing like the Prinz.
