Women had been portrayed as sex objects on MTV for nearly 10 years before this song/video came out. I commend Salt N Pepa (plus beautiful DJ Spindarella) for flipping things around and showing that women have power, too.

The fact that Salt & Pepa (a female rap group) were an MTV main stay for nearly 10 years is incredible. During that time female music acts & rap artist were treated like novelties. But these ladies had skills, talent, & style. They were the real deal.

"Girl's" song? I'm a straight old white guy (63) who's been a S&P fan since they came out. Shoop's a great song! Music is music and sometimes you have to look at things from the point of view of the artist to fully appreciate it. You don't need to like men to appreciate that women do! That beat and those rhymes make for a great song. If the focus on the men bothered you just think of it as the fact that there are those women out there who would want you that badly.

First time I'm motivated to make a main line comment - Salt 'n' Pepa were pioneering just because they did things their male counterparts usually did and flipped the script and sometimes did it better! Also...contextually, the meaning of "Shoop" is pretty obvious. Just take it from that frame that you thought wasn't cool and guess the next steps. I saw them in concert a year or so go with the Mix Tape Tour. They still got it. They were also on Lip Sync Battle a few years ago, with Cheryl (Salt) doing "It's Tricky" by Run DMC. She nailed it.

Hi darlings these ladies were trying to make their way in a male dominated musical genre hip hop during that period was difficult for women they were portraying what was happening from a woman's point of view during that period. I know you guys are learning about music of the past but remember all music has a back story I encourage you to research some history on some of the hip hop group's starting with the 70"s on down you'll learn so much but also do the knowledge on DJ Kool Herc not a lyricist but rhyming came by the way of use of turntables and breakbeats the ole lady loves y'all !!!

Wow I realize how sexualized the music I grew up to was back then. Something cool about the 90s was no cell phones, that’s why they’re at the beach looking around, hanging out, filled with excitement lol that was the 90s, we had to stay busy outdoors and find stuff to do, now good or bad depended on the person

You make it sound as if women do not have an option other than to be objectified. Every woman ever that has shaken their body clothed, wearing bikinis or nude was their decision to do so. Whether it be in a music video, stripping their clothes off for money and or tips or if it’s porn. They choose to do it. So don’t act like women are victims in this. Women have used their bodies to their advantage from the beginning of time. If women don’t want to be the center of attention or objectified all they have to say is no. Because in the end it’s all about what a woman or man is willing to do for money.
@Halfcrowindian
@Halfcrowindian 4 года назад
Shawn perhaps you should research Women’s Rights. (EX: 19th amendment- women granted the right to vote. It’s the 100yr anniversary); 80cents to a dollar; most strippers/prostitutes do it bcuz of kids. It’s been a very slow progression but very much remains a mans world... Look forward to the day where women don’t have to objectify to get ahead. I’m old school- don’t agree with it but understand why; met several-the stories are heartbreaking😥. Far too many judge in today’s society when compassion is what’s truly needed💞

You should do a reaction video to the song they did with En Vogue: “Whatta Man”, which is a banger! Then, you should do a video reacting to “O.P.P” by Naughty By Nature, which is another bangin’ song and is linked to Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue as the lead singer Treach, was married to/dated Pepa, and he had a cameo in the “Whatta Man” video too.

You really should evaluate your reaction to the guy on the beach, if it was a girl you’d be totally into it. They just put the man in the Sex object position for two seconds and you can’t handle it.🤣😂 I mean for God’s sake, they show him barely lean over and instantly, “they shouldn’t have even shot that.” an, “This is definitely a girl’s song!” Omg the hypocrisy! If women acted like that, there would be no popular entertainment as we know it!! I know you guys are are young and there are cultural issues,but damn!

@@jancw Agree. Also, I didn't see anybody criticizing Jayveetv for doing the exact thing, he looked pissed when that guy appeared. They just were all super positive, saying things like "oh jayvee your so cute, this is my jam!". But twins apparently don't get away with "bad" reactions, they get judged all the time while everybody else gets scott free. C'mon guys, we should be just as positive in comments, support our boys, school them if need be, like giving the song's background, history behind it, fun facts.

Come on guys. No such thing as a guy's or a girl's song. I'm female and I can watch a video with girls in bikinis without being offended or off put, so I'm sure a dude can tolerate a 2 second shot of a guy's clothed butt. Doesn't mean you have to enjoy looking at it, but it doesn't make it a "girl's song" or "not cool." You wouldn't say it's a guy's only song if that same shot was in the video but a girl. Love you guys, but come on.
