Song comes from a part of 13th century Icelandic saga - Egil's saga. It featured in Vikings(the TV show - their translation is used for chorus) and Assasin's Creed:Valhalla. The verses are the same song sung in Icelandic(as it is closest to Old Norse the original would be in). The village is a restoration of viking village they rented for the shoot, the costumes were done by Alea(the singer), his partner(at 1:31 in your video she is the redhead furthest away from the camera) and a group of friends around them - they do cosplay stuff. The video shows a "holmgang" a ceremonial combat to settle disputes. Originally to death, later to first blood drawn(which we probably see in the video) or some other rule the contestants/combatants agreed upon. 7:05 You can see the blood is of two colours, two thicknesses... it's blood of both of them... essentially they fought to a draw - I think. Love me some SaMo... they started more punky, evolved more towards metal. They also did the best Hypa Hypa version(imho), Alea was part of the Feuerschwanz cover of "Warriors of the World united"(beats the original imo), and for anniversary of Skyrim they did cover of "The Dragonborn comes"... All are absolutely worth reacting to.

Saltatio Mortis is a great band that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Btw Alea, the singer, collaborated with Feuerschwanz & Ad Infinitum !

The song is a cover of an ancient viking song in the old Icelandic Eddas. The original verse of the song is said to have been sung by Egil after his mother told him what it took to be a viking right after he killed his first man at the approximate age of 7. The lead singer learned some Icelandic for the verse.

It was a 'Holmgang', a fight to draw first blood. The video is based on the game Assassins creed: Valhalla. Alea plays Eivor, the woman he fights is his sister and the shaman is Valka. The game is amazing, well worth playing. Saltatio Mortis also did a promotion with Elder Scrolls for their upcoming game with the song "Pray to the hunter' an awesome video you should check out. Another game based song was 'The dragonborn comes' a cover of a song from the game 'Skyrim' with the gorgeous Lara Loft. Definitely react to that one.

it was neither a wedding nor a funeral but what was called Holmgang (hólmganga in Old Norse and modern Icelandic, holmgång in Swedish, holmgang in Danish and Norwegian and nynorsk) It was a duel practiced by early medieval Scandinavians during a dispute or if one of the parties felt the there honor had been trampled upon. It was a legally recognized way to settle disputes which were usually settled when one of them drew blood.

He sang this several times, but I want you to hear Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya. He's Irish and he has the wildest range I've ever heard. Seriously, he can punch a hole in a basement floor with his low notes and woo angels with his high notes. Oh, and he's started incorporating metal. So...that song.

Have you heard any dArtagnan? German folk metal. Kind of pop but really catchy. And there's a _bagpipe..._ "Dem Himmel Entgegen" or "Feuer und Flamme." Faun is an interesting group. Pagan folk rock. "Galdra" or "Federkleid." Another Saltatio Mortis (the a in tatio is a long a as in bay) is "Feuer und Erz." These songs are in German. Or try "Gloryhammer" by Gloryhammer with Tom Winkler singing, not his replacement. That is in English and maybe scifi metal? And, no, Vikings did _not_ dress like that or put on that type of makeup. The current fashion for Vikings is rooted in the show, Vikings, and fantasy. Not history.
