This song is such a journey. They've taken Tool, 'The Funk' itself from Mighty Boosh and Tesseract and smooshed them all together into one song. Enjoyed Chokehold. Adored this. Thanks for another rad reaction vid!
I agree with you about 2. This direction hes taking with his drumming is still unique, well written and well played, yet less in your face about it. The ghost notes of Chokehold, and basically the entire song on this one was something new and different yet amazingly well played.
Incoming essay. You’ve been warned. I have so many thoughts rattling around in my head since hearing this for the first time and I’ve been waiting with baited breath to see your reaction to this. First and foremost, I am a HUGE fan of The Dear Hunter and the way the blend and fuse genres and experiment with all sorts of sounds that shouldn’t work together, but they make it work. I ADORE that band. And the last two Sleep Token tracks here are giving me those exact same goosebumps. They’re writing some of the most progressive music I’ve heard in years. And despite how mental they’re going, it maintains a degree of accessibility that I am astounded by. How can something this rich and dense be so easy to jam to? They’re walking a razor-thin line and miraculously pulling these stunts off. Vessel II is showing ENORMOUS diversity here. During the heavy parts, he sounds like something between a dog fight and heavy-caliber warfare. He’s beating the holy fuck out of that kit like it disrespected his entire family. But then towards the end there, he maintains such a fluidity and control. It’s as though he’s out to prove once and for all that he’s not JUST a crazy gospel-inspired core drummer. Naw, he can do R&B, too. I joked before that I expect this band to eventually do a honky-tonk country western song in the style of Dolly Parton with breakdowns. At this point though, I’m not sure if I’m still joking or not. My favorite thing about them is that I absolutely never know what to expect except that it’s undoubtedly going to be a fun ride. And I’m trying to wrap this up but I am still picking bits of my head up off the floor. But I’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about Vessel’s vocal delivery here. Absolutely unreal. His time around Sam Carter has clearly paid off because WOW those harsh vocals were amazing! It sounded like White Pony-era Chino pig squeals and I had no idea he was capable of that register. This may be my favorite track they’ve ever released. It’s SO dynamic. SO experimental. SO … different! This is strange and unconventional even by Sleep Token standards. They’ve set the bar so damn high. I thought TPWBYT would be a tough one to top, but these past two tracks have stirred me and I am beyond eager to see what the rest of this record sounds like. 5 days into the new year and we’re already looking at a possible AOTY. Incredible. Simply incredible.
They took us on a crazy ass journey with The Summoning and I was here for ALL of it. I remembering running upstairs to get my headphones when it dropped, just sitting on my floor completely enthralled in the adventure that was blasting through. I made faces, expressions with my hands and noises like it just did crazy stuff to me I can’t explain. Love love love it. ST knows what they are doing!!
I kinda like the fact that the ST drummer has historically drifted into that "guy at the wrong gig" territory with busy riffs and fills but the guy is just SOOOO good and it feels like it's part of their sound. Whatever musical journeys the band will take, it at least won't be the drummer who can't guide the way :)
The two songs I have heard have been so well done. They feel like they could be dropped in to an action movie soundtrack as is. Very atmospheric. That last (Daft Punk visits the studio) part just shows how fast new ideas are clearly flowing for them.
I first heard sleep token when they released The Love You Want and while I love that song, I didn't really dive into them too much. These last releases have completely converted me! And now I get to enjoy the ride. Awesome reaction, as always! 😊🤘
One of my favorite reaction videos 😂 Pure joy watching you go through the motions of discovering every inch of this song. Speaking of which, the song was totally out of this world! Loved the heaviness AND the funk… Sexy as hell!
If you go back to Sundowning on Gods, Vessel works in harsh vocals for the first and last thirds of the song and I've been hoping they would do more of it. Loved both these songs and I'm really looking forward to what comes of these. I'm still amazed at how well they know seemingly every musical genre to just blend them however they see fit.
Yes, it’s not his first foray into scream vocals, and I do love Gods for that reason, but he’s definitely taken it to another level in recent months. He’s certainly training it up.
Fan-fucking_tastic song!! lord have mercy! If i was incapable of showing emotion, i could easyly put your reaction next to my emotionless face and it would sync perfectly how i was feeling when listening to this song with you, made me laugh at same time. Getting back to this song, almost every style type i love they welded it tastefully together in this masterpiece, jzus christ so juicy!! Thx steve , loved that once again!
Wow that Song is a great one again. So interesting. And great funky part. They manage me to Love the chilled ones and the heavier ones. This one got a great Chorus. My new favorite after Alkaline and the Love you want. Amazing honest reaction Like Always 👍😉
I love the experimental nature of this song! If this song is going on an album I really want to hear the track that follows "The Summoning" just to hear the transition. Also, the first half of this song reminds me so much of "You've seen the butcher" by the Deftones, which is never a bad thing!
All in 4/4, lots of playing over the bar though; drummer really loves to displace the snare within different parts of the bar. Lots of dotted quarter note grooves too.
My take on this song, which is easily one of the best they’ve ever done. They’re including so many diverse influences in this one and totally bending it to their own. I hear Deftones in the chorus, Tool in the verses, Messhugah and Vildhjarta in the breakdown, Gunship in the solo and synth work, some Polyphia thrown in with some 90s r&b in the last part (reminds me of Genuine-Pony)
I used up all my fucks on this song. "Fuck yes!", "Fuuuuuuck", "Fuck!?", "WTF?". Overall, part 1 (of three) was fucking bombastic. The other two were great on their own but I would have loved if they'd gone from part 2 then back into part 1. But then, I'm surely no Vessel.
Could be, yes. But also, knowing who II is, they’re clearly interested in continuously improving their drumming. Seems like an incredibly focussed individual.
I think "... and we're done, what the fuck?!" sums up this reaction. Sleep Token never miss and are easily the most exciting band on the planet at the moment, you know what you'll get yet have absolutely no idea what you'll get.
I loved all of this, but for me it doesn’t work as one track. It feel like a medley or consecutive album tracks. I would have preferred it extended into 2 separate 3-4 minute tracks to keep the mood the same in each.
