The string section is in other songs. Corey Henry is the keyboardist. Unreal. And Larnell Lewis is the drummer. Fun fact: this was recorded and filmed in the Netherlands, and the original drummer had issues with his passport, so they got Larnell to fill in. He was only barely familiar with the material (I think 2 songs) and had to learn the rest while in the 7 hour flight and the cab ride to the studio. Also, “learn” is a bit of a misnomer, since these songs were barely written yet. They existed in structure form, key changes, basic melodies and time signatures, but the musicians were responsible for filling out the details themselves. They had been working on this song for 2 days, and it wasn’t coming together. Then in walks Larnell who learned the song structure for all 13 (I think?) songs in this session during that one plane ride, wrote his own parts in the process, and then they nailed this song. Everyone involved said Larnell brought all the songs to life. And the keyboard solo. Enough cannot be said about Corey’s ridiculous solo. It’s the type of solo I’ve heard musicians, keyboardist especially, say makes them want to quit. It’s too good

Every single one of them is an exceptional musician in their own right. Put them together and the sense of JOY they bring is beyond compare. Their skill in their musicianship with the ease of delivery and the depths they go within themselves to produce those fantastic solos is an absolute anomaly to me. The respect they have for each other. The ability to play just enough to fit in and yet when required to step up and Star. Just mind blowing. Written, (structured) yes. Improvised, yes. Jamming (feeding off each other) yes. It's all there. This is an exceptional group of people led by an exceptional composer and band leader Michael League (the bass player) doing an exceptional thing that brings pleasure and joy to countless thousands of people across the globe. I think you just described the exact reason why reaction channels are so popular. I’ve heard the song Lingus and I also love it. Watching you react is a way for me to re-live hearing it for the first time. I get the same dopamine kick I got when I first heard it, even if it’s not as big of a kick as the original. So thank you for giving me a taste of that feeling once again. Now go and watch some other people reacting to it for the first time and maybe you won’t be so sad ;)

Like most jazz that's performed live, this song has a written structure that the players all rehearse and learn. Within that structure are measures given to improvised solos. That's what makes jazz so wonderful to experience live: it's never the same song twice.

Fortunately for you, Snarky Puppy has many videos that will all inspire this same reaction. I’ve got two immediate suggestions: First, they did a song with Lalah Hathaway that I believe won a Grammy, and is one of the most insane vocal performances you’ll ever hear. And then second, they did a song with Jacob Collier, who you reacted to a couple days ago, and it is appropriately strange and mesmerizing.

Also, not to brag, but way back before these guys blew up, a friend of mine paid out of pocket to have these guys come play at our tiny local venue. I don’t think there were quite as many people playing regularly with the group at the time, but it was still a ton for our little spot, and it was an amazing show. The horn players ran their instruments through guitar pedals into amps, which was really cool. I think some of them might still be doing that in this video, actually... it kinda sounds like that trumpet solo was going through a wah pedal. Anyways, great band, glad you found them. Enjoy.

This is jazz/fusion, so you have a bit of funk in there, some pop sensibilities, some eastern vibes all on a bed of j a z z, Michael league (the bassist) is a phenomenal composer, as for the improv feel, a lot of the song is carefully put together, but with some “pockets” for improvisation, they played the set a couple of times and landed on this one as the best take, the whole album is a great listen
