Great Reaction Y'all! Yes! Snow is a White, Irish, Canadian guy raised in the projects with a high ratio of Jamaican immigrants in his neighborhood. Darrin Kenneth O'Brien -Born 1969 -Stage name is Snow -"Informer" (1992) spent 7 weeks at #1 -Parents divorced, raised by his Mom in public housing project where, he says, he was fascinated with the gangster lifestyle, fell in with a tough Irish-Canadian group and became involved in a cycle of fighting, drinking and stealing. -He never learned to read properly and dropped out of school while in the 9th grade. -He had a strong interest in rock but in '83 a lot of there was an Jamaican immigrants moved to his neighborhood so his interest turned to reggae music and he became good at speaking the Jamaican. -Dialect is Jamaican Patois: an English-based creole language with West African influences, spoken primarily in Jamaica. -Snow was in prison several times for mostly physical violence. -In 1988's there was a stabbing incident at a pub. Other people in the group pointed the finger at him, and he was charged with two counts of attempted murder. Rather than tell authorities who the perpetrator was, Snow served eight months in prison before a jury acquitted him. -While he was in jail, he went to school and wrote music. -An Informer is a SNITCH! His lyrics throw insults those who he claimed “snitched on” him. The hook of the track is based on Snow physically threatening the “informer” who got him locked up. -"Informer" exploded on the Billboard charts while he was incarcerated. By the time he was released from prison, Snow had become an international household name. *Some of the info is from Wikipedia
@@gamexsimmonds3581 Since Rico & Crys have never really listened to Reggae, I was going to recommend reacting to the legend Bob Marley: "Redemption Song" "Could You Be Loved" "No Woman No Cry"
@@jennhurl I think those re great songs, because there's aren't familiar with Reggae I would have reccomended they start with more modern sounding hiphop influenced Reggae and then work their way backward, that might be easier and grab their attention more at the beginning. But either way I hope they continue to explore new sounds, new artists, and new regions
"lick your bum bum down" is a Caribbean term for I'm going to knock you off the planet ...or get rid of you .....to knock somebody down. He doesn't look like it but he was the real deal Gangsta in the day. He recorded this, but was actually in the can on an assault charge when it blew up and started getting airplay! Snow was charged and imprisoned for attempted murder but was later released. He grew up in a mostly Jamaican neighborhood. He's not putting on an act, this is what he listened to and was around all the time!
I don't think it was hilarious since it was an insult to Snow, implying that he was an imposter, which he wasn't. He may be white but he grew up in a neighbourhood full of Jamaican immigrants who he hung around with and learned patois from them and listened to Jamaican music. He was into that, that was a big influence to him. Just like Eminem and how he was called an imposter at first because he was a white rapper, not much different...
Informer is the only song by Snow that really took off, however he has other songs that in my opinion are better. You could check out these songs from his debut album: - runway - Lady with the red dress - girl I've been hurt - lonely monday morning
When you check the lyrics, he's talking to the dude who snitched him out, and when he gets of east side detention, he's coming straight for the informer. Click..boomboom..DOWN! That's some straight Toronto gangster sh..
This dude was hard as hell. Shop lifted in New York for MC Shan to help feed his family back in the day when he was wanted in Toronto for double murder charges.
I went to snows concert at a local club. Ended up in back room with Snow and Ton Loc. Was way to drunk and tried to rap battle them. 1 hr later I ended up in a bush 🤣🤣 I guess I sucked
He has very good track with Nadine Sutherland too, there is a lot of good Raggae from back in the day. You can listen to Beenie Man, Buccaneer, Merciless, Spragga Benz, Lady Shaw, Damien Marley, among others that you will find. Great Reactions guys, bless.
I grew up around Jamaicans. So did he, apparently! I know EVERY WORD to this song. Haha! But I also know what he's saying, and its the HARDEST shit! 😎💯 When that dude proclaims in the 3rd verse that he's the "Article Don"!!! THATS some SERIOUS shit! People have been murdered for saying THAT shit!
I hung out with his babymama in Jamaica for a bit. This is a good song and always will be, for a lot of reasons. It sticks in your mind for days after hearing it.
He comes from the same part of Toronto Canada as me. Jim Carrey did the parody Imposter . Ah early 2000s McDonalds my old friend, Parents trying to bring food inside the playground area, people pushing in line, people arguing with you about everything, shitty pay, good times. Hope you're both having a solid weekend so far.
Rico & Crys: Since you have never really listened to Reggae, maybe react to a iconic song by the legend Bob Marley? "Redemption Song" "Could You Be Loved" "No Woman No Cry" There's so many bands & artists that fuse the genre in their songs. For example: Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Police, UB 40, Ini Kamose, The Pretenders, RUSH, & Led Zeppelin. Reggae is such an influential genre and worth a listen. It's so laid back & chill! You might like it! 🎵❤🤘
I grew up near the same area. I don't regularly, but when I'm angry this accent comes out of this Irish/native girl too. It was Island Carib neighborhood. hahaha
Snow is a Canadian growing up in a Jamaican community in Toronto his style is called SKA which is a fusion of Reggae & Hip-Hop rap but done in Jamaican Creole language which is a fusion of english or french with local Jamaican dialect
Hey Guys!!! When this came out, "Transformers" were getting Popular. About 2 years later, I was in a Comedy Troup doing Skits, Improv and Song Parodies. I wrote a Parody with the line> "Transformer.... I know your gonna Turn into a Train.... a Little Choo-Choo now...."!! The Crowds Loved it!!!
"take the man to city, then imma stomach somewhere down the lane a licky boom boom down." it's about putting snitches (informers) on notice. wild track.
I am Croatian. English is my second language, and before I could probably even speak Croatian properly, I was a small kid, I knew how to sing/rap this song 😂 I couldn't do it now. My older cousin was very amused by this and was making me rap this in front of her friends 😂
Damn, early years of grammar school and most of us trying to figure out what the hell he was rapping!! Lol. It was so good hearing this in the radio in 1992-93. Now when I hear it, this shyt was ahead of its time!
Snow is a Canadian Reggae/Hiphop artist. Of course this song is about snitches, folks working with the police. Snow actually went to jail around the time this song came out for assault. We was gone for 8 months and while he was in jail this song started to get played on Much Music which was basically the Canadian version of MTV and it was played on the radio and when he was released the song was a hit. The sing is actually about an incident that happened a few years earlier. Snow had been charged with attempted murder and was detained in Toronto for a year and then the charges were changed to aggravated assault and eventually dropped. So dude was definitely a gangster. He grew up in a Jamaican housing project in Toronto and that's where he fell in love with Reggae and learned the slang. Thats why he said " People damn say I come from Jamaica" and "Pure Brown people mon, that's all the mon know" the guy who rapped at the end was MC Shan. He produced the song and helped snows early Career. MC Shan was actually a huge deal in the mid 1980s, he was a rap pf the rap group the Juice Crew with Marley Marl. But after a beef with KRS One and Boogiedown productions and after saying that hiphop started in Queensbridge when it actually started in the Bronx he fell off and wasn't heard from again until Snow came out. In 2019 Pureto Rican artist Daddy Yankee made a remix to Informer called Con Calma and actually got Snow to do a verse on the song all these years later. It's kinda dope and yall would like it. I hope yall react to the candian rapper Classified too
Classified is one of the most underrated rappers in history. Dude has legend respect in Canada but Americans barely have heard of him even having a song on Madden. Love more of his older stuff then the newer stuff but the new stuff is still dope.
This time 29 years ago I didn't know what I was in for. This is one of the most overplayed songs in MTV history. Every single time I turned to MTV this video was playing and it drove me crazy...for months. It was catchy the first 1000 times, though.
Toronto patois is it's own thing. Hang with Caribbean-Canadian kids from Regents Park, St. James Town, Jane -Finch for a week and you'll be hearing and speaking it. But then go two blocks away and it's all different. The best way to understand is the Star Trek TNG episode "Dharmok" where the crew encounters people who speak only in idioms. The Tamarians. But in the Toronto 'hood the point was to not be clearly understood by outsiders ...
Mad respect for Snow!!! I love this song, a lot, it’s a whole vibe, but he never got the recognition, in my opinion, he should have with his other stuff 🖤
was on the same floor as him in the east detention center in Toronto way back .!!Seen him at the Kool house ,he was opening for Sean Paul when he was big .Amazing concert.Torontos different we dont have the racial stuff like you guys do in the states,I grew up in mostly Jamacian areas my whole life done aot of time in the jungle at the west detention center in T,O and 1 block Collinsbay Pen and never ever had any racial problems .20 years in and out .Thats what makes Toronto the best city in the wold ,the music scene was great back then ,used to go to jamacian dancehall concerts or basement parties almost everyweekend.Times were good back then when i wasnt in jai. actualy much music (canadian MTV Rap City ) even did a show when i was in Collinsbay Pen in 1994 i think very cool< Sorry started babbling. This song brought me back to those times in my head. Thanks for the flash back .Love your channel!!!
Such a great (sry, have 2 say it) one hit wonder - absolutely ear worm catchy song - sung by a Canadian Jamaican ! And, in the same vein as this era,, these are also ABSOLUTE must hearz from the 90s / early 00s - commenters please help get these on the channel ! T Y US 3 - Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) Len - Steal My Sunshine Chumbawumba - Tub Thumping Bare Naked Ladies - One Week or All Star A3 - Woke Up This Morning Looking forward to seeing more of your content. Make it a great day ! ✌️
@@bryanjames6669 -it always pays to double check your work- I know my focus was on US 3 track ... The Smash Lady Naked Mouth Bear came to fruition... Along with probably a Shrek soundtrack and kingpin or some other movie had one of these songs I don't know,,, I even looked on Google for the spelling of chumbawumba track, and I think auto correctED it ? But, yeah, all those songs,,, And, the 90's had LOTS of music .... Smashing Pumpkins, Black Crowes, NIN, All of Seattle, Alanis, Nelly & Nelly Furtado, Pantera, etc .... 🤘 🤪🙄
I had a GF who went to high school with Darrin O'Brien. He grew up in Allenbury Gardens in the North York area of Toronto. Years later i had an employed who was related to him. Snow actually has a lot more hit songs but i think his other songs in the late 90s were only somewhat big in Canada and don't think they were heard in the U.S. checkout The Plum Song by Snow if you get a chance.
Jamaican people were really happy for him blowing up, outsiders gave him a tough time though, onely monday mornin' is good too, another great reggae jam is Welcome to Jamrock
Early raggaton by a white dude. Very 90s. Heard that a millions times. Very Caribbean. You wanna check "the hotstepper" by ini kamoze which came out about the same time. Some carrabean flavor for ya which was really cool.
Snow is legitimately a gangster too. Dude was in prison when this song came out. Was in for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and 2 attempted murders..wasnt involved in the attempt murders but still. His whole family has mob ties as well.
I accidentally ran across your channel and you were doing an Eminem review so I had to subscribe. I like you guys because you are very personable. I have been listening to Em from the beginning of his career and I only live about 55 minutes or so directly south of him! What's funny about this Snow guy is he sounds Jamaican but is actually from Canada! LOL ✌🙏
Im happy you liked Snow and hope you get into more Reggae. Reggae and Hip Hop are like cousins. If you want smooth reggae/dancehall styles you can get into Tenor Saw "Ring di Alarm" you can also react to Mr.Vegas "Nike Air" Tanya Stephens "Its a Pity" Barrington Levy "Broader than Broadway."
Yes, I Would Have To Agree With My Guy, I Thought 💭 The Same Thing … Just Listening To It Though, I Would Assume He Was Jamaican For Sure So Yea !!! But, He Did Grow Up With Jamaican Friends, And He Was Always Around That Jamaican Presence… Plus D.J Shan & Snow ❄️ Was Boys…
Daddy Yankee and Snow did a new Reggaeton version recently called “Con Calma” You NEED to react to the Jim Carey “In Living Color” parody version though. It’s classic comedy from the old Waynes skit show In Living Color
This just Jamaican rap. Reggae has a "ska" guitar riff. Snow was actually in prison when this song was released. He saw the video in prison for the first time and the song went #1 for seven weeks. Made h an instant celebrity.in the pen 😂
Another Canadian classic to check ot would be the awesome "Let Your Backbone Slide" by our national rap statesman Meastro Fresh Wes! Thanks for another great reaction!
Ah yes, the "Leaky bum bum" song... To this day I have no idea what he's really saying, but ever since someone pointed it out to me that's all I can hear now lol
If you're going to listen to reggae listen to Bob Marley first off second off this is definitely reggae influence but I would call this more in the ska genre then reggae no woman no cry or redemption song any of Bob Marley's music beautiful you'll be hooked.
Dude, when I was a kid I had NO idea what this song was about. I'd just run around the block or house singing this and my mom was always mad at me for it. Lmao, knowing the lyrics as an adult, I'm like *pikachu face*
