I’m a 73 year old grandma who still has the original S & G vinyl that includes this song. I accidentally came across the Disturbed’s video version in 2020 as everything locked down because of the pandemic descended. I was blown away. I’ve since checked out the bands concert performances and other videos and came to love them, even the heavy metal. I’ve been checking in on re actions by others (voice teachers, musicians, reacters) and your response has been the most Savvy and complete one I’ve heard. Thank you!

I too, at 70, discovered this version by Disturbed in 2021, as the pandemic lockdowns enslaved most of the world. The emotion and intensity of this song made me weep every time I listened to it for the first couple of weeks listening to it over and over.

The original version does sound like a warning of sorts but THIS one is like the final warning! I get chills every single time and your reaction was spot on!!! Your facial expressions were right on target with my chills. LOVED THIS!!! I want more!! Josh Groban recorded Bridge Over Troubled Water and it is on his latest album, Bridges. What a great rendition of S &G's song, I like the little bit of Viking touch. And the lyrics seem so ahead of their time. YOU are the only person I've heard here on YT who got this song 100% plus!! I have been so disappointed with others because it went over their head, like they were not LISTENING, or so it seemed. But your interpretation was like mine, relating it to breakdown of communication in society, and what it is doing to us and children. But YOU went even further than my brain was able to and added thoughts I had not considered. E.g. that the worshiping of idols over communication with each other has occurred throughout time not just in the present, wow, sad but so true. THEN you also threw in the free speech problem we are having today! WOW! A great listen. Thank you for sharing!

The best description of this performance that I've seen is: Simon & Garfunkel's version was the warning of where our society was going, and Disturbed's version is an expression of the frustration and anger that the warning has been ignored. Paul Simon is an absolute genius in the composition of this song. He and Art performed it with a "sweetness" and softness that actually belied the importance of the song. I've always felt it was one of the most prophetic of my long life. David pounded it home with a sledgehammer, and we needed it desperately! And yet society still does not hear!! We are so self-centric, so self-absorbed, see ourselves as a star, around which planets orbit, when we are actually asteroids, and are only significant when we lift others - allowing our eyes to drift away from ourselves. It's a masterpiece for a second time.

@chinbeard3852
@chinbeard3852 Год назад
@@STILL-KICKIN It might just be a confusion of terminology. Classical training usually means training in a specific classical repertoire like opera etc. Cantors can have formal training but it isn't 'classical' in the sense most people use it in western music. Cantors are often trained privately, like many classical vocalists are. It doesn't necessarily mean formal training like a degree from a music school. Edited to add: my mom was a classically trained opera singer with a degree in vocal performance and a private voice teacher for many years. She's over 70 now so she doesn't sing as much as she used to, and of course her range isn't as wide, but she can still make the hair stand up on the back of your neck singing Ave Maria.

@@galadballcrusher8182 I get you, but when people say 'classical guitar' and 'classic rock guitar' we usually understand the distinction. I heard this song first in the sixties as a kid. I always interpreted it as being a condemnation of television, breaking up communications within families, within communities. Now it is applicable to mobile phone and netflix etc. I think David made an incredible cover of this song. It has lost it's folky feeling and become something much more under Disturbed's interpretation. His anger developing over the more morose and intraspective beginning. But it ends with hope that there is a way out of the silence. Epic, as you said, is what Draiman's did here.

I always like to describe David Draiman’s voice as a Lamborghini V12 engine. Smooth and subtle at low power, it develops into this strong and full throated rumble when he’s cruising, but when he puts the power down, it becomes this bellowing roar that you notice from a mile away and leaves you shuddering. One of the most powerful and unique voices I’ve ever heard. Disturbed is a band you should definitely check out some more of, and not just for more of Draiman’s voice. You’ll find as you delve into metal some more, that there is a surprising depth to the music and lyrical content, and Disturbed is well known for songs that often touch on very sensitive, and sometimes taboo, issues of mental health and emotional well-being with a no nonsense but positive attitude and genuine concern for their fellow humans. Given your propensity for the psychological and sociological aspects of music, I think you would find a lot to interest you there. Especially songs like “down with the sickness”, “inside the fire”, “the light”, “prayer”, “reason to fight”, and many others I can’t quite think of right now. Also, as you mentioned you like middle eastern style of music, you’re bound to hear some ME elements within their work and especially in Draiman’s singing as he is a classically trained Jewish cantor and that shows up a lot in his vocal flourishes and mannerisms.

Hello Rosalie, great reaction! This is one of the few songs where I think the cover version surpasses the original. I am quite old ;D but the original lyrics by Paul Simon are still so relatable. Originally he was reacting to the consumerism of the new media of television :O in relation to radio, but if we ignore the obvious anachronism of 'neon' the words are totally modern. In todays world, we would talk about the fact that everyone is into social media and permanently looking at their mobile telephones, that computer algorithms dictate what the people 'see', since you are only shown things similar to what you like. In this process - again, controlled by a computer - you could miss an incredible amount of content that could change your vision of the world. The good thing in this case is that reactors like you are shown things that you would normally not be interested in, because your listeners point you in the right direction. Other people are sometimes kept in a bubble of their own making and don't get the 'big picture'. This song was, however, a different direction of the band Disturbed, even Paul Simon said he was impressed by this particular cover. If you want to get a better idea of the normal content of the band, I can recommend the song 'Down with the Sickness' by Disturbed. Fun Fact: The lead singer, David Drayman has classical training which is shown in this cover by his masterful control of his voice in order to bring the meaning to people without overdoing the singing.

Hi Rosalie! 🤗✨💗 Wow - I've had so many chances to listen to this before, but haven't until now. This song has a special place in my heart - goes back to HS and a song/dance group I led. A very special time in my life with rare beauty and comfort. And I'll admit, knowing Disturbed made a version of it, I stayed away from this, being worried I might bruise that memory. (I don't always respond well to angry music). But goodness - this was amazing! Such a powerful interpretation, performance, and visual message. Gave me a similar vibe to when I heard American Pie for the first time (mostly from the complexity I think). This interpretation is deep and dark - the visual at the end of all the musicians and instruments in the same life boat, perhaps floating to the hopeful safety of a new unknown - so powerful - and a vision of perseverance. I agree - epic. Life is often so challenging - holding onto positive memories from the past is safe and hard to risk. But this was certainly worth pushing through that worry. Thank you for helping guide me to this growth. I respect you, my friend. 🥰😘🎶

This song is special, in a way that makes the word 'special' sound completely inadequate. It's one of my favorite songs to show people who claim that metal artists aren't real musicians, and that metal is just screaming. Thank you for checking it out. You touch on a very good point. Metal doesn't shy away from emotions - any emotions. It doesn't avoid them, sugarcoat them or speak about them in hushed tones. Metal drives into and through emotions like a freight train, confronting them headlong. Metal is passion. And that's why I'm a metalhead. The original version of this song sounds like a plea to me. "Hey, watch out. We're heading in this direction." This version sounds like a final warning to me. "We warned you! This is where we're headed!" To answer your question, I'm from the Netherlands.

I think this song is about people's inability to communicate with each other. This problem has become so much worse in the last two decades with the advent of smartphones and social media. "People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening". You see it everywhere online, especially in politics. The miscommunication has gotten so bad that it's almost like people aren't even speaking the same language anymore. Everyone is so caught up in their own echo chambers that we're living in completely different realities. We can't even agree on the most basic facts. No one even wants to have genuine dialogue with people they disagree with anymore. Instead of actually opening their hearts and listening to what other people are saying, everyone is just waiting for their next opportunity to score some cheap political point that they think will help their 'team' win. People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening.

Henk Poort is an Opera Baritone who learned in 24 hours especially for Floor Jansen how to sing with disstorcie especially for Her evening/episode of Beste Zangers 2019( Best Singers ) because she thinks it is such a beautiful song and also liked the cover of Dissturpt so much. he sang it in that version for her

I know it’s a warning sign to society but I connect with it because I am a people pleaser trying to set boundaries. I also have depression and it’s so resonant with the sound of silence. It represents that isolation that can happen . And the first line reminds me of when the depression first starts up again, when it’s minor and I can deal with it. It’s like slowly moving down a water slide until suddenly you hit the steep drop and fall really fast 15 feet.

Another great, and perceptive reaction, Rosalie. IMO this is one of the greatest covers in modern music. It is a testament to this arrangement, that it has been covered by quite a few other varied artists, Pentatonix, and Henk Poort to name a couple. That is often overshadowed by David Draiman's virtuoso performance. I think Down With The Sickness might be considered Disturbed's signature song, but this one is their most popular, I would guess. A couple of other recs: This might be a bit detailed, but it might make a really compelling dramatic reaction. Do you know who Christina Grimmie is? If not, she was a young YT musical sensation and later a popular contestant on The Voice. If you happen to not know anything about her, I would recommend doing the following together in one reaction, without research: Titanium ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yQg9wCR_xPw.html Wrecking Ball ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RLM4PEFJOeU.html News ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hKOe5iIg1cY.html If you do know the story, but not the music, either of those performances are great in different ways . Titanium done indy solo in a small home studio and Wrecking Ball on The Voice, killing it in the blind audition. The last is just a short news story about later events. Another really talented singer guitarist who does it his way is Chris Klafford. If not familiar with him, he was a Swedish Idol winner and AGT contestant. He does really beautiful covers and originals on his channel, called the Kitchen Sessions. Maybe his cover of Imagine might work as a reaction? The AGT version might be a bit difficult copyright wise, but his Kitchen session of it is really lovely, and shouldn't be problematic.

A powerful reimagining of a song that already had powerful lyrics. David Draimin was classically trained. Disturbed has a wide range, from very heavy in "Down With The Sickness" to a ballad like this. "Hold On To Memories" is another lighter song vocally, but definitely not emotionally, heavy tissues warning. "The Light" is a little heavier vocally, and also emotionally. P. S. I want to change my song suggestion for The Bass Gang from "Century" to "The Emperor's New Clothes", because it shows off their vocals better.

The original was written in sadness as a warning about the direction society was taking. S&G were performing an early version of the song in New York at Gerde's Folk City, a Greenwich Village club that hosted Monday night performances in September 1963, a month before the Kennedy assassination. I have always thought that in the United States, younger adults and kids were affected by increased insecurities on a subconscious level by the Cold War rhetoric and the imminent threat of nuclear destruction made real by the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
