When I was a teenager Steely Dan was too jazzy for my taste but I always was blown away by their guitars. I'm glad my taste has matured and I can love the songs.
A Haitian divorce is one that someone can get unilaterally. The other person doesn’t have to be told. You go to Haiti and get the papers then you can show up back in the US like “Surprise... we’re divorced now”
A number of Dan songs end too early and Hatian Divorce is another prime example of this for the song can easily jam for another 2 minutes plus and it would be befitting of the song. Has always been one of my favorite of theirs as it has the groove and story working hand in hand in symbiosis.
Hell of a way to end an album, no? Everyone’s got their favorites cuz there’s so many to choose from. That was a great analysis brother. So much going on in this song and you pointed it all out. On to AJA my man.
vicious, witty lyrics, that is normal for Steely Dan. Music always inventive. You should hear the song "Aja" Very jazzy, you will remember the drums forever
Thanks for taking us on this voyage with you. I have loved Steely Dan for years, but I haven't journeyed far off the beaten path to meet some of their lesser known tracks. I'm hearing some of these for the first time, too and I'm enjoying the experience. Just added you to my Patreon family.
I'm really enjoying your journey, having been a huge fan of the Dan from the beginning. Played in a band back in the day that did a few covers. Would love to see your review of Your Gold Teeth ii from Katy Lied. Their first unabashedly jazz tune, and an unusually positive lyric. Also just saw your review of Snarky Puppy, please do more of those! That whole European recording/video session is transformative.
Dean Parks played the guitar on this Becker added the talk box to Parks guitar later. Haiti offered quickie divorces by only one of the partners you could literally take your new squeeze to Haiti divorce them and remarry on the island
They released this as a single in the UK. Surprisingly (to me - I love it, but Do It Again, Rikki, FM are more obvious candidates) it was the most successful Steely Dan 45 here. Have a look for white folks reggae in 1976. There's virtually bugger all (Eric Clapton shooting a sheriff apart..). Walter Becker was and remained an enthusiastic connoisseur of reggae rhythms. You should do Here At The Western World as part of this set. Chronologically it belongs here. It's only on their Greatest Hits LP, but should have been on Scam. I dig you enjoying Steely Dan immensely. You're probably at the half-way point in age between me and my son who loves 'em too. I'm enjoying your voyage.
Love that tune! Looking forward to hearing you react to the next few SD albums. They gonna take it to another level for ya and be cemented, if not already, as one of your favorite bands. Much love.
This is an excellent example of how the guys bring you into the story. Charlie Freak is another great example. She got pregnant by the kinky so and so in Haiti!
Wait... all original DramaSydE album? Where do I sign up? 💙 A little behind the lyrics info... mikegreenstein.wordpress.com/2010/01/28/behind-the-words-haitian-divorce/ PS. You gotta know you can't tell some people nothing... no matter how clear you can see it playing out. You couldn't have saved this guy...
He’s done every song from Can’t buy a thrill up till this point. Katy lied is on vimeo due to a copyright issue. Just google dramasyde vimeo katy lied 🤝
Great sound in this song but I could not help but notice the impact of the end of the story. You kept your composure. The difference between now and 50 years ago. Great music but the impact of story line is real difficult to stomach and really unacceptable in the world we live in now.
