Here is why the song still works: 1) every dude has felt heartbreak, not as extreme as this, but enough to identify; 2) every woman is convinced that she is wonderful enough to have had this impact on an ex. Plus, it is masterful - vocals are transcendent.

The man that used to manage the Chi-lites back in the 70s lived in the same apartment complex as my mom. He was a little sweet on her and we would all sit outside talking at the table with some other people. He was a Chicago police officer in the early 70s ... we would drive around at night and he would show me how he patrolled the streets and once in a while tell me stories of his time with the group. When the Chi-lites came to town a few years ago he was invited to come to their show. He showed me later all of the pictures that he took with them.

Another great thing about 70’s soul was the spoken word intro or monologue which were precursors to rap. The Chi Lites, Manhattans, Main Ingredient, Spinners, O’Jays, Isaac Hayes, Barry White, Bill Withers, and Bobby Womack all used the monologue effectively in their music as did James Brown.

I can understand the sentiment in the song. Maybe he was going a little too far, but I worked with several guys and ladies back in the 80s, and had a crush on one of the girls who was a ballerina at that time, who had moved to Colorado by the time I went back to the area around 30 years later. I went to some of the same places we all used to go, and it felt lonely and empty, thinking of them. Especially her.

In the 70's, top 40 radio had the Chi Lites, the Four Tops, the Staple singers with Pops when Mavis was a baby, The Allman Brothers, Doobies, Chicago, Led Zep, America, singer-songwriters like Elton, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Carole King, and funky acts like Dr. Hook and Black Oak Arkansas, ALL ON THE SAME STATION. When you listened to music, you were exposed to everything. It was a much more fulfilling experience than we get today. The Chi Lites were from Chi Town, Chicago and part of the Chicago soul scene. Today they are often mislabeled as a Motown or Philly Soul act. In my opinion lead singer and Cheif songwriter Eugene Record is one of the greatest in the history of R&B. He never got the recognition he deserved as a writer. He belongs in the songwriter’s hall of fame.

Where did it all go wrong? Such amazing talent and nowadays with all of this C-rap, hip-hop, manufactured boy/girl groups, the overlords that control the music industry and the puppets within the industry have mostly removed the poetry the passion and the message of peace and love that used to exist. Musically, todays youth are being dumbed down and herded into little Barbie and Ken puppets that just consume any garbage presented to them because they don't know any better. Channels like this are doing a great service sharing what real musical talent was and still could be.

I was one of those kind of guys BJ said he wasn’t . I did those things when my first Girlfriend left me , I moped around for about 4 months then I snuck up to her doorstep & placed an album & a note there. It was Bee Gees Gold & I told her to play 2 songs from that album “To Love Somebody “ & “I Can’t See Nobody.” Well it worked & we’ve been married for 42 years. 😀

Thanx Asia and BJ. Another song that brings back so many great memories. Another great example of how great music was back in the day. Nothing like this today. Music was at a higher level then

We were little white kids in the UK back in the 1970's and loved all these groups from the USA. The-Chi-Lites, Stylistics, Delfonics, Detroit Spinners, Detroit Emeralds, the O'Jays, The Trampps, etc. The list goes on and one. Thank you for the great music.

This song was a hit in the first semester of my first full-time college teaching job, which was in S Calif. Reminds me of the drive to work, as it would often be playing on the radio.

Classic song. I had forgotten about how much I loved this song. I grew up listening to those wonderful Motown harmonies. This haunting song just plucks at your heart strings. So smoothe and sweet.

Asia...when you lose someone, whether to a break up or through death, the heartache you feel does something to you. When my daughter was killed in a car accident it affected me and to this day, I am still not the same. Love is powerful and when you truly love someone, the love that is gone is truly felt.
