This song changed culture. Nothing like this was out or thought of at the time. First time he played it live on acid the audience was enthralled...

I consider the doors a rite of passage for serious music lovers. And you my friend are a serious music lover. Their studio output is great and all….. but their live stuff is EPIC. I personally was obsessed with the Doors for a good chunk of my school years (80’s and early 90’s). They were of perfect storm of talent and timing. When you look at their place in the pantheon of rock music, I think they are criminally underrated from an influence standpoint. Truly one of the absolute greats.

Jim Morrison was not a songwriter, he was a poet! Their music is euphoric. You have to watch some of their live performances. They were one of the first bands to try new sounds such as using a bottle on your finger while playing guitar and using the organ sound on the keyboard. The thing that makes them live in that special place is because the world lost Jim so fast. They hit the scene in the mid 60s and he was gone by 71. It almost feels like he wasn’t even real. It’s so hard to describe how they make me feel!

I saw Jim Morrison & the Doors live in concert at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York on March 16, 1968. They included this number in their set. Needless to say, my friend's and my young teenaged minds were blown! What a concert! And we had 2nd row center seats, looking right up at the Lizard King, dressed in a skin tight, green snake skin suit! Take me back!

You have to put yourself in the mindset of the times, and what what was happing. (Vietnam, politics, society ect) Also, where the music was coming from on the west coast (L.A. bands like the DOORS, Laural Canyon CSNY, MAMAS AND PAPAS, or the Bay Area GREATFUL DEAD, JEFFEERON AIRPLANE) the vibes were all different. Mind alternating substance were used heavily during this period and influenced the music. Ray Manzarek (keyboards) played all the bass lines with his left hand on a separate keyboard (the DOORS never had a bass player) Robbie Kreiger (guitar) one of the underrated players out there John Densmore (drums) also one the most underrated drummers going PLEASE, continue your journey through, and down, this psychedelic rock rabbit hole you just blindly jumped into. Just like Alice did in Wonderland. PEACE! And enjoy your trip into this genre of music.

I know of no band that has a "more unique" sound. The members were musically eclectic. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek had a background in jazz and possibly classical music; guitarist Robby Krieger in classical music and flamenco guitar; drummer John Densmore in jazz, classical music, and other genres from around the world; and singer Jim Morrison was a mad poet.

I heard nothing you said after the song started. But I thought i'd let you know this little known symbology in the song. The color of government vehicles changed in the mid to late 1970's prior to that all vehicles were light blue colored. The blue buses would pull into neighborhoods and pick up the 18 yr olds that were drafted and then sent off to Vietnam.

When he was a child and was on vacation with his parents, I think in Mexico, they came across a bus full of people that had rolled over. Jim would tell the story because he believed that the souls of the dead entered him. One of his lyrics says "Ghost crowd the child's fragile eggshell mind"! Without him this band would never exist.

The lyrics that got your attention were "Father, I want to kill you. Mother, I want to [screaming]." Substitute the screaming with the words "f**k you" and you'll understand that he's singing about an Oedipus complex. The longer, second musical crescendo that follows seems to me to represent an orgasm. Starting at 13:00, the singer Morrison was barking "f**k" and "f**k me, baby." They engineered the sound so that they could get away with it on an album in the 1960s. I know of no good live performance by the band, but the one by actors in the film "The Doors" is extraordinary. Val Kilmer should have received at least an Academy Award nomination for playing Jim Morrison. Apparently, Morrison wrote the initial version of this song about his breakup with an old girlfriend. He said that what it became could be interpreted to be about the loss of childhood innocence or death or anything else people wanted.

Before my dad joined Steppenwolf he was interviewed by Jim and Ray for a possible bass player position in the Doors at the Roxy until Jim got into an argument with his girlfriend in the middle of it and they just split. That was that - I think dad would have been miserable in that band being as structured as he is. #borntobemild

More than 30 years ago when I was in college, my classmates had group study sessions. One night it was my turn to choose the music; I chose "The Doors" Greatest Hits. In the middle of this song playing at a low volume in the background, someone asked "WTF are we listening to?" I've always been a "square," except for some of my music tastes, so that was a proud moment.

The combination of this song and the moving thingy in the background is totally hypnotic 😆

Soooo many metaphors in this song. Jim was a master. There is a deep rabbit hole to fall down with The Doors. Very unique band with a very story.

Morrison was the epitome of cool. Just oozed sex appeal and the phrase "women wanted to be with him, men wanted to be him" could have been coined only for him.

Matricide, fratricide, “cold” death and destruction. An existential experience. You had to be there when this song came out.

I see a call and response between a visionary poet and a responsive band. It's extended beat poetry. Their sound illustrates the story. They don't know what they're going to play next, and this is a snapshot of what he may say one night. His visions come from their music, then they collaborate and elaborate. In the first half. When I was in 7th grade I had a friend who introduced me to classic rock. This was 1987, so classic rock was a moniker given to the greatest music from the 60s and 70s. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Queen Etc, I still remember to this day what he told me right before he playing thius song. "OK, get ready. No, seriously. Get ready for a ride." later that day I heard Stairway to Heaven for the first time, too. It was a good day.

This song played at the very beginning of Apocalypse Now (a phenomenal film, and a must see!), and is my favorite song by the Doors (of many greats!) Edit: My recommendation - Riders on the Storm is amazing, another absolute masterpiece.

Very trippy music, Jim Morrison kind of crazy, he has a beautiful voice! Touch me babe, great song! A lot of his music was in Viet Nam movies!

There are certainly suggestions that Morrison is talking of the end we all must face, and escaping the inevitably of it whenever possible, but there is also a hint that the singer is telling his audience to live their lives as freely as possible in the meantime. One such instance comes from the Oedipal notions in the lyrics: “Father? Yes son/ I want to kill you/ Mother, I want to…” One can imagine how Morrison would sing the lyric live and it was doing so, back in 1966, that saw him and the rest of the group banned from performing at the Whisky-A-Go-Go. The track was usually reserved for the final moments of the show but, on one occasion, after Morrison had been out drinking and arrived late, the singer decided to perform the closer in the middle of the band’s second set. He delivered the track with the expletives and, once the gig had finished, was quickly booted out of the venue and never invited back. In the recording too, Morrison was asked to restrain himself when singing the lines. In fact, only in 1999 did engineer Bruce Botnik put the “f**k” back into the track. It’s concoction that gives the track an extra powerful punch, amid an already stringent conception.

If you want a relaxed evening, than listen to the album: An American Prayer. Released after Jim's death it was surely something Jim would have loved to hear. Many off his recorded poems (never used in Doors songs compleet) have been put together and the 3 remaining Doors created music to it. Release date 1978

I first heard this song when it first came out back in 1967! I was only 5 years old but when I first heard it as my Mother played the crap out of this album to the point where I knew what song was coming up next. Was Very haunting yet enchanting to me. This did come from their debut album. After listening to this, watch the movie "Apocalypse Now"! They play part of this song which during the scene while this song was playing sent chills throughout my body! Their biggest hit off this album was "Light My Fire" but I as a child preferred this song as the Absolute Favorite on this album, followed by (in order) " I Looked at You", "Break On Through (to the other side), and "The Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)! You'll see the differences in mood between these songs!! Jim Morrison Way ahead of his time yet he was a Poet in his writing. Unfortunately he passed in 1971, part of the "27 club"! Jim's father was a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war. Guess they were polar opposites, embarrassed his father in the upper echelon circles I imagine

You mentioned that Jim Morrison has a nice voice. He has one of the best voices and some of the greatest charisma of any rock vocalist ever. Everything I learned about being a rock ‘n’ roll front man I learned from Jim Morrison.. When I was a teenager, I would study his live performances; I would scrutinise his expressions, the way he would prowl around on stage like a caged beast - and then the times when he would let go completely, unleash the beast. When I was not playing with a band, I would practice by performing Doors tunes at karaoke bars in my full stage gear😅: leather jeans, motorcycle boots, embroidered linen shirt - just to keep my skills honed. If I didn’t go home with a chick that night, that was a sign I was getting rusty, and I needed to PRACTICE MUCH HARDER 😂. that was a good 20 years ago; I can’t radiate, the same kind of energy these days, at 41.

One of my favorites to see people hear for the first time. It's a mind blower.

I was a big fan of Jim Morrison and the doors when I was in college in the late 80s. I had cassettes, door size posters, biographies, books of his poetry. Deep into it. What I find funny is that, at that time, their music, or anything from that era, was only twenty years prior but seemed so long ago because it was our entire life ago. Today, it would be like things from the early 2000s, which feels like yesterday.

I believe this Song got the doors kick out the door of the Whiskey A Go Go in LA on the "mother part" as it was un self censured. This is a good chill song, In college I'd listen to this when studying Calculus over and over again back in the late 70's.

This song was always something different - the exotic scales used, Jim's haunting voice, tribe-like rhythm, everything is just psychedelic. I imagine this being the choice for many hippies and others while getting high back in the day. Not my choice when I listen to the Doors but definitely something extraordinary.

What an iconic band, from their first single onwards they seemed special,.Managed to visit Jim's grave in Paris a few years back a good four mile walk through the city from our hotel to the cemetery..it was a must do thing while on holiday and so glad i could tick that box. So many truly gifted individuals live life on the edge and Jim was certainly one.

One of the greatest bits of movie directing was interweaving this song with psychosis, in Apocalypse Now. Breathtaking.

The Doors will take you on journeys. Another band around for only a short time, but left such an intense trip for us even decades later. Jim Morrison was a beautiful mess.

This song in particular has the band creating an Eastern drone effect with a drum foundation as an aural canvas for Jim’s voice and lyrics.

One of my all time favorite doors songs. It started out as a simple song about Jim breaking up with a girlfriend at the time. It turned into a wild ride afterwards. It just got longer and longer and stranger. Jim would improvise a lot when they played live. He’d go off into poems, thoughts.

This song was played over some very intense scenes at the end of the movie Apocalypse Now, it married well with the violence of those scenes!

It's a mood and a groove that is uniquely theirs. When I hear this, or any song off of the first album I think about Los Angeles in the mid to late sixties, Jim and Ray walking Venice Beach, and all of this grit and emotion bubbling up between them. This band is a thing unto itself. A deep dive for an intro into The Doors.

To understand that mother/father part you have to understand about Jim. His father was an admiral in the U.S. Navy -he literally had a ship named after him, and was also the inspiration for Otto the freaky Bus Driver in the Simpson’s estranged father “The Admiral”. Jim was estranged from his entire family from a very young age. Venice California became his family, his home, his safe place, his freak fest (see the cover of Strange Days). But when Jim was a little boy he was on a car trip with his parents across the desert and they came across a car accident with “indians scattered on dawn’s highway bleeding”, dying. He looked in to the eyes of a dying Indian and believed that the soul of that Indian jumped in to his body that moment when the Indian died. He conducted the rest of his life based on that belief. And often went back to the desert to trip and connect with his Indian soul. Jim was a poet and released an album of his poems set to music, called “American Prayer”. That was his last release and “Ghost Song” is a must-listen. But Jim’s poetry is definitely a teen-angst kind of poetry and the Doors are awesome but the songs are kind of a high school frame-of-mind thing.

Love them, Jim was blessed with the soul of an Indian medicine man dying rd side and looked into his dying eyes at an early age. Very tribal and spiritually out there is where it comes from.. Was written after a break up. NEVER a first listen though, LA WOMAN or LIGHT MY FIRE. thanks
