To see a young guy appreciate the REAL talent of perfect instrumental timing WITHOUT COMPUTERS is awesome! This is so cool for me to watch as an older guy seeing a young person appreciate the real talent behind the real TRUE artists of the past. This song is as good as old school soul gets.

I just love watching a young man like you dig on these great funky grooves from when I was growing up in the 70s. You are right. They knew production, singing and instrumentation back then. It was a priority to sound good through hard work and ability and not some autotune. Too many people today want to look like Prince but don't want to put the amount of hard work that prince put in to get to the level he got to. Back then, everybody put in the work, or else you couldn't make a record. Period. Great job young man. I enjoy your reactions to this great music. Keep up the great work. Play it for your peers and keep this stuff alive please!

One of the best live lounge groups ever, sorry you missed those days, youngster. All I needed was a phone call that the Dramatics were within 500 miles of my home in Minneapolis, and to the airport I would go. One of their best shows, along with the best back up band, was at Chicago's Burning Spear Nightclub on 79th and Stoney Island in 1977. They turned it out.

Percussion instruments you hear, that a lot of bands used: conga drums-hand drums in oval shape, played sitting down, or standing with the drums on their own stand; Claves - 2 sticks hit together, also the name of a heartbeat rhythm, very prominent in Latin music. Most of them have origin in Africa. This track also featured horn section, which is usually combo of sax, trumpet & trombone, & also featured electric guitar & electric piano. Some groups used organ as well. This recording released around 1971, but HUGE CORRECTION regarding synth keyboards: Billy Preston released Outa-Space, also in '71. You've reacted to Stevie Wonder's 'Superwoman (Where Were You...). Most of what you hear in the transition to Where Were You when I Needed You, is a combo of synth sounds that Stevie is workin with. That release was around'72, & I believe his Talkin Book album, featuring 'Superstition', was '73, of which the synth line is a main staple of that tune. Around that time also came Herbie Hancock's 'Chameleon', which is a MUST to check, & several jazz/fusion artists, sort of birthed by Miles Davis, were exploring synth keyboards as a main instrumental voice such as, Chick Corea (his band, Return to Forever), Joe Zawinul (Weather Report), Jan Hammer (Mahavishnu Orchestra), George Duke (Frank Zappa, as well as his own groups). All of those keyboardists were pianists first, who were directly associated with jazz legends & involved with acoustic jazz connected to the tradition. Herbie, Chick & Joe all got into electronic experimentation with Miles. So synth keyboards had really gotten well established throughout the '70's, obviously a decade before '80's. You can probably find a Schaffer Beer commercial from the '70's that featured the Moog, which was one of the 1st synths. Let's also not forget one of your favs, 'Summer Madness', which is basically a jam featuring an Arp synth. I know it's tricky to properly get a sense of the time line in the music, as there's just so much & it's looked upon more like history. That said, GREAT reaction!!

Great reaction!!! This came out in the summer of 71 or 72. People were walking around wit hats and t shirts that said watcha see is watcha get. I had the t shirt. I was just 11 or 12. We knew the meaning of the songs and everything. Also had a t shirt that said say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud. From the James Brown song.

The 1970's had some amazing Groups. Them, The Intruders, Manhattans, Stylistics, Chi-Lites, Delfonics, and The Spinners and The O-Jays but many started as early as the 1960's. The Temptations were slowly losing steam with Eddie Kendricks quitting and Paul Williams dying after being fired as well. Most of them were One Hit Wonders but they are still legends.

The title song to an album I played a ton at age 3. Btw, per Chuck D of Public Enemy, that "ch-ch" part at 2:35 of this vid is sampled in the intro of their song, Fight The Power; the track played during the opening credits of the movie Do The Right Thing. Sidenote, I also really enjoy your movie reactions; watched the one for Fresh last night.
