The Police are so iconic...Amber, I think I've heard you say that you love the show Friends, there's an episode where Phoebe expresses her love of the police, she totally fangirls out when she finds out that Ross's kid Ben goes to the same school as Stings kid, she pretends to be his mom so she can meet him, it's a whole Fiasco LOL💕✌

Great reaction again, Jay and Amber :) Leave it to The Police to purposely use gibberish for a song title ... and have it land on Billboard as a Top 20 hit. Their diversity was incredible. I agree with some others that Syncronicity II would be a great next reaction for them. It's unique ... of course ... and has a moody, dark feel.

"De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" was the 3rd Police single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and their 1st single to peak in the Top 10 (#10) in 1980. I was pretty sure that "Roxanne" must have reached the Top 10, but it only peaked @ #32 in 1979. Also, I assumed that the 2nd single "Message in a Bottle" was a hit but it peaked @ #74.
@bookhouseboy280
@bookhouseboy280 11 месяцев назад
Roxanne and Message in a Bottle were hits outside the U.S. The former peaked at #12 in the UK and the latter reached #1 in the UK. It was #2 in Canada but that's before the band's huge stateside success.

Love this song!!! The music is top notch! The title is a reference to being tongue tied. The Police often have clever, deep lyrics or literary references. Sting had been an English teacher before. Which adds meaning to Don’t stand so close to me, about a teacher. Listen to Don’t stand so close to me. Then listen to the monster hit Money for nothing by Dire Straits. It dominated the radio for months. Notice the vocal by Sting. Notice that “I want my MTV” takes the melody from “Don’t stand so close to me”. I wished I had seen them live while they were together. So when they had a reunion tour, it was a dream come true, and I jumped on the tickets even tho they were $250 each. Their show was one of the best things i have ever seen.

You know I’ve listened to this song since it came out. It was never one of my favorites but I never once knew what he sang in that little bridge before the chorus. Eloquence. Good grief you guys got it right away. Oh well 40 years later haha.

This takes me directly to a roller rink in Washington, DC in 1980, where I met Amy Carter, the President’s daughter, and we all skated to this song. God I am old! 😆

According to lead singer Sting, the song is about the attraction that people have to simple songs.[2] Sting later criticised those who labelled the lyrics of the song as "baby talk," claiming that the song was grossly misunderstood.[2] He evaluated, "The lyrics are about banality, about the abuse of words," saying that "the lyrics have an internal logic."[2] I was trying to make an intellectual point about how the simple can be so powerful. Why are our favourite songs 'Da Doo Ron Ron' and 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy'? In the song, I tried to address that issue. But everyone said, 'This is bullshit, child's play.' No one listened to the lyrics. Listen to the lyrics. I'm going to remake it again and put more emphasis on what I was talking about. - Sting, Rolling Stone, 2/1988[2] Sting also said that "I was trying to say something which was really quite difficult - that people like politicians, like myself even, use words to manipulate people, and that you should be very careful.”[3] The phrase "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" supposedly was made up by Sting's son. Sting said of this, "In fact, my son came up with it. I've never paid him - so that's another possible lawsuit. He writes songs himself these days. He's got a lot of self-confidence - I don't know where from."[2] Its B-side, "A Sermon," was originally written by Stewart Copeland in 1977 and is a parable about a band ruthlessly making it to the top. Copeland played most of the guitar as well, including the intro riff, while Andy Summers can be heard in the middle.[4] Sting said of the song, "It's arrogant, but Stewart is good at being arrogant in a funny way - as in that Klark Kent line about 'If you don't like me, you can suck my socks'."[2] In the US version of the single, "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da" was paired with "Friends", a composition by Andy Summers. "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" was released as the follow-up single to "Don't Stand So Close to Me" in Britain, and was released as the debut single from Zenyatta Mondatta in America. Upon its release, the single became a top ten hit in the United Kingdom and the United States (their first in said country), reaching No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart[5] and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to its English-language release, both a Spanish-language and Japanese-language version of the song were recorded and released in their respective markets in early 1981. Actual 45 rpm copies are rare.[citation needed] Record World said that "Sting's affecting vocals and a percussion-clad rhythm track have created retail/radio reaction that's strictly big business."[6] The cover was designed by Hipgnosis and uses the title of the song to juxtapose an image of the band with one of a woman's hand reaching out to a telephone to call the police. The song was prominently featured in the 1982 film The Last American Virgin and on its soundtrack. It also appeared in the pilot episode of the medical drama St. Elsewhere.

Neil Finn (lead singer of Crowded House/Split Ends and current member of Fleetwood Mac) told a story of when Sting walked backstage at a Crowded House concert some years ago and serenaded Neil by singing the lines "Hey now, hey now," (from the song Don't Dream It's Over) Thinking he was returning the compliment, Neil then proceeded to sing De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da back to Sting. However, Sting took it the wrong way and thus Neil had succeeded in inadvertantly offending him 😆

I took my son and his friends to several Police concerts when he was in school. (That made me the “cool dad”). I became a fan of the band as well. Andy Summers had such a unique style, just hearing the guitar on a song, you would know immediately that it was a Police song.

They got the words while touring in Germany. The stage manager didn't speak English and the band didn't speak German. Stage manager finally pointed at the members and said, du, du. Da, da, da". "Du" is "you" and "da" is "there".

For me the quinnticential Police sound is fourn in Bring on the Night, the bass line, the drum fills, the reggae and arpeggio of Anys playing and the over dubs of Sting vocals exhibiting his vast range.....would be a brilliant song to react to

Stewart ( the drummer) was always filming with his Super 8 camera in the early days. He made a compilation of his movies into a film about 15 years ago. It's very entertaining.

The Police dominated rock music for the first half of the 80s. They then passed the torch to U2 around Live Aid.
