This was a live appearance on the Andy Williams Show. No tricks, no redos, no second chances, no autotune, no nothing but his talent. IMO this is one of the all-time best live performances ever ♥ .

I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

Danced to that song at my high-school prom just before leaving for Vietnam. 56 years later and Bobby Hatfield can still touch people's hearts, from beyond the grave. RIP brother and thanks for the music and memories.

That's what I have heard as well. This was from the Andy Williams show. Which according to Bobby, was his mother's favorite show. And, her measure of her son's success. (He made it to the Andy Williams show. He must be a real singer.)

@@johngriffith3644 Yes. The song was sung by Todd Duncan to lyrics written by Alex North. It's from the movie "Unchained" . Hence its song title Unchained Melody, since nobody could come up with a better name for it.

As you said Schnell, Many artists have covered this song and some have done it justice, but in my humble opinion, no one has ever performed it like Bobby Hatfield (R.I.P.) of The Righteous Brothers, he absolutely owns this song!!! This "live" version is even better than the studio version!!! Mic Drop!!!

I call this "Bobby's Song." Even though it was first recorded by great artists as Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton in the '50's, also Elvis, NO ONE ever sang it as beautifully as Bobby Hatfield, and there are so many of his and Bill's music that is so great, and so underrated. But Bobby is in a class by himself. He could sing ANY genre' he chose, and make it his alone. He is sorely missed, but he left a legacy of beautiful music to be enjoyed for years to come. Love you, Bobby!

Best version hands down of this classic song. Absolutely loved the Righteous Brothers. Sadly we recently lost Bobby Hatfield. He had a beautiful one of a kind voice. Austin Brown from Home Free did a very beautiful tribute of this song.

Well, I don't know if you would call it recently. Bobby Hatfield died on November 5, 2003, at the age of 63. There will never be another like him. Bill Medley, the other half of the duo, is still performing at the age of 81.

You need to go back almost 30 years to hear Englishman Paul Salvage do a knock down outstanding version of this song on a British TV show. And BTW Bobby Hatfield died in November of 2003. He has been gone 18 years now.

It was the title song of the 1957 movie ‘Unchained’, which starred Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. That’s where the name comes from. But nobody thought much of it until these guys sang it.

No-one did it like Bobby. Wonderful voice, great range, from baritone to full counter-tenor, he made it look so effortless. The natural break (which sounded like a yodel) isn't used much these days. You need a certain elasticity in the throat to achieve it. His breath control was excellent too. Women melted on hearing him.

It’s an early reaction, when all she’s seen is just Bobby standing there singing. You don’t see the band. He doesn’t dance (which to me is actually a huge difference from today). He’s got a great suit on, but there’s no glitter. He’s got no visible tattoos. Other than the little smile, he doesn’t make facial gestures. He’s a really good looking dude, but in today’s world, he would be considered metrosexual at the very least, but back then, he would be seen as wholesomely romantic. That’s what she means y simple, not the singing at all.

About the microphone, he wasn't supposed to use that one. That was the pedestal mic, we had a larger (longer) one all set up at stage center that was supposed to be handed to him, but he just grabbed the smaller one from the pedestal instead. Just one of those "mistakes" you go with. I think you're wrong about the nasal constituents, he was vey good with using his diaphragm when singing which almost always precludes a "hollow" nasal tonal quality. Yes, we were also told his mother was present that night, just left of stage center, 2nd row (if you watch real close in the video, he looks that direction several times during the performance). Also, the performance was taped at a venue across the road from the original Disneyland, in Anaheim, CA, when they were booked to work the Andy Williams show. I didn't much care for the place, actually. The acoustics were OK but not great, and setting up for good sound took a lot of work. It was a long, long time ago, but I always enjoyed working with them (Righteous Brothers, Spector not so much). They were just so human and great to be around, joke with, grab a burger, or party with. Like Ken and Karen Carpenter. And watching Bobby perform, he made it seem like having a cup of coffee was harder work than singing. I never saw that man break a sweat ! And their talent was so profound we really thought something really great was being produced through their performances.

No no no. That is not head voice, it is within his awesome vocal range which extends up into the counter tenor range. He had an unbelievable voice, easily gliding into that high C that sopranos often strain for. He was truly remarkable..

Bob Hatfield, what a voice and what a feeling.... he's just awesome and amazing. Thanks to all of you, the people who love this song. The most perfect voice ever. Absolutely flawless. This particular love song it has special meaning to me mostley during the Vietnam war for us who want to back home alive. This is such a melodically beautiful love song with an absolutely stunning performance. Bob Hatfield's voice is so incredible, it doesn't seem right that we will never here his voice live again. It makes me want to weep it's so beautiful. In my 72 years, I have never heard anything as beautiful as this it brought tears and emotion in my life. Good song never die. Thanks to you noble friend. Good work and continued to present beautiful pop song.

Very well said. I have been in love with Bobby since 1963. His voice is unmatchable. A lot of people think those high notes are "Falsetto." Not so, Bobby was a "countertenor," with a natural high-register. Listen closely, and you will not here the strain, the facial stress of trying to reach those high notes. No strain at all, so easy for him. That lip-bite at the end said, "I nailed it!"

He knew he had delivered. 56 years later, young women still are brought to tears when they hear a recording made with 56 year old technology. Bobby Hatfield owns this song! I was only 4 when he performed this particular version. I didn't discover any of this until a few years later. There's no one that does it better than Bobby! So good and a great song.

Live, no auto tune, no computers, pure talent, real instruments. his parents were in the audience, this was the Andy Williams show a national show everyone could see....big pressure, live TV, he nailed it beyond belief. He does not do this on the recording, and the recording went t #3 in August 1965.

Jordan, you said “Beautiful.” Yes, he was!!! And so was his music. 😍 Bobby Hatfield stood and delivered. No auto tune, no fog machines, no dancers, no fancy lighting and other stuff. He just stood with that small microphone and sang his heart out. He seemed as if he was singing to each woman. I was 23 when he performed this live on the Andy Williams Show. His parents were in the audience for the first time and he was nervous. Find the You Tube with Andy’s intro for the Righteous Brothers this night and you will hear how breathless Bobby is. He was very nervous. Just precious. I hunger for a return of this type sincere, kind and gentle music. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I remember this song from the 1950s. In 1965 I was in the Army ( Infantry ) serving overseas doing my bit, and hearing this version remineded us of home in the UK and our girlfriends. I served 30 PROUD YEARS IN THE British Army retiring 1960 , now I am nearly 80 , and still listening to all the old favourites from back then. Thankyou for brining back happy memories.

Exactly. Back in the day when we first heard these songs none of us even THOUGHT about interpreting the lyrics or trying to extract a message. They were LOVE songs. It was all about the SOUND and how it felt.

Bobby Hatfield nailed this song EFFORTLESSLY and with such raw emotion you could feel it. Grew up listening to Righteous Bros. and wish music today was not auto tuned. For Bobby it was just a man, his orchestra, and a microphone. May he rest forever in eternal peace.

It was originally released as the score for the movie Unchained in 1955 and was sung by several people after that, but their version is UNDOUBTLY the best before and since (IMHO).

Live on the Andy Williams Show ... Bobby was nervous as his parents were in the audience... Pure... No Auto-tune... Nothing but pure magic. These types performances while live there was just a warmup in the afternoon and then done in one take... Rarely was there the time or need for any sort of a re-shoot

Once you have heard this song you will never forget it. I was a young teen when it was released, and it still holds a grip on me. The best slow dance song ever recorded. You didn't have to analyze it or think about it. Just have your arms around your woman and get lost in your own little world. Thanks for sharing.

It's actually a song written for a prison movie, about the person in prison thinking of a sweetheart. However the righteous Brothers are the ones who made it the most famous , and in my opinion did the best job. 👍😊

The song was not written for the movie. Maybe it was enhanced in some way then. It was written about 1936. The author did not his love to the girl he wrote it for and she married someone else. He sat on the song for 19 years until some guys with awesome voices recorded it. I read somewhere or heard that over 600 people have sung the song. Bobby's is my favorite.

You're correct. 5 full octaves. The last note he hit was high even for a female. It was almost off the keyboard. Anything higher he would have been whistling. RIP Bobby.

I grew up in era of this and was luck enough to get to see them twice in person. On this night Bobby hit the note and put song in his back pocket, and that's why he owes it. Remember to this is live and no redo or button pushing Live. This is what you call Talent. RIP Bobby

In the '60's they were going for a refined look and wanted to de-emphasize the distraction of microphone technology. Notice he is using the same technique as Steve Perry from Journey - singing across the top of the mic, rather than singing straight into the mic. That removes risks of hisses and pops, it lets the boominess of the voice to fall off and you get a nice clear vocal tone.

Bobby Hatfield, been melting women's hearts with this song since 1965. This was a performance on the Andy Williams Show and Bobby was a little extra nervous that evening because his parents were in the audience. Before the song, Andy Williams asked Bobby's partner, Bill Medley, why he didn't sing on this song. Bill replied that he didn't know it was going to be such a big hit. The Righteous Brother had a big hit with this song, but they were not the first artist to record it. It was made for a movie that came out in 1955 called Unchained.
