Jack White is all about harsh sounds, simple riffs that permeate the songs, and being the only musician there besides the drummer. That keeps the soundscape uncluttered, and the sound a little crude. But he's an instrumental and compositional genius.

Twenty One Pilots is also only the singer and drummer, Tyler (singer) and Josh (drummer)😅. They have many many songs and videos out over the years and have traveled the world. Tyler can also play several different instruments.... Keyboard, guitar and drums. Voiceplay did several of their songs. Ride, Heathens, Stressed Out in a mashup with Kurt Hugo Schneider. They also did Ride by itself.

In no way is this down-playing Jack White's brilliance, but his lyrics aren't the sort you need to spend time dissecting. He tends to adlib them, while working out the melodies; whatever pours out of his soul and fits the music. He doesn't usually start with a story concept. He starts with music, and lets the spirit of blues carry him away. Many of his songs had no lyrics until the moment of recording in the studio. This is a testament to his genius, in fact, as the lyrics he comes up with on the fly are so strong, vibrant, and profound, they feel like they must have taken ages to construct.

Not entirely true. I heard him explain how Carolina drama came to be. I'll agree lyrics come later but that he's not telling stories, no I can't get on board with that. He's specifically stated that he creates characters to make songs/stories about. Where I tend to disagree with him is that none of his characters have anything to do with him.. I do agree he does channel what he creates, however, any artist filters their craft through their lens.. to some extent, but that's where the beauty is.

This song, especially, is tough for a duo to pull off. There is a bass line (played on guitar, but still), rhythm guitar part, lead guitar (including using a slide), the drums, and obviously the vocals. This live performance is nothing compared to what they did in the studio, check it out. Meg is a simple but compelling percussionist. Jack is an insane wizard. You could explore their entire body of work and continually be delighted and surprised.

I love The White Stripes since they debuted, but Raconteers were better, far as Jack's projects go. 'Steady as She Goes' and 'Salute your Solution' are bangers that can be played any time. 'Carolina Drama' is also a master example of a storytelling song. Jack White is a creative force that we won't see the likes of for a LONG time.

Agreed. There's a massive difference between this live performance and the fully mixed track, which is not to say that The White Stripes can't put on a great show, but this song really sings in the optimal environment of a recording studio as opposed to on a talk show set. Jack White takes a lot of influences from early blues, delta blues and a little Detroit rock radio... He blends it up with some modern gear and rips out some really great tracks. I find genius in his simplicity and his selection of gear. I think the guitar here has a "clean" pick up and a "dirty" pick up that he is switching between. This allows him to not require a pedal. ZZ top's Billy Gibbons has a few set up this way as well. Jack's voice is like a third instrument in many tracks, using vocal modulations and scat lyrics to perform fills. As for bands, the white stripes have some interesting stuff.

That aggressive and persistent riff just annihilates me every time. It's so great to re-discover so many great tunes through your reactions to them. "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac, "Grazing in the Grass" by Hugh Masekela, "Bron Yr Aur Stomp" by Led Zeppelin, "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull, "Rock the Bells" by Run DMC .... they all (to my loving ear) have that hard-charging, persistent sort of beat I just *cannot* get away from even if I wanted to! You reacting to this song has just set the rest of my Sunday afternoon housework playlist theme.... thank you! I just discovered your channel _this morning_ and I'm really enjoying your articulate, thoughtful, authentically nuanced takes... The song selections are great of course but I can get that on any channel; you really bring something genuinely different to your reactions and while you're not the most animated when you get on to something that rocks your socks off, that sly Cheshire Cat grin of yours just tickles me to death because then I "know* you're jamming, even if only on the inside. 😉💯 Can't wait to hear/see more from you!! - A happy new subscriber from Colorado

The guy is really eccentric. It's a duo because he is obsessed with the number 3. They have voice, guitar, and drums. Adding another person would be more than 3, so he doesn't like it. People criticize her drumming for being simple, but honestly, keeping the drums simple helps put more spotlight on the amazing guitar work if you all me. A drummer who's knows how to stay out of the way is a good thing. Another example of this is the drummer from AC-DC, who is famous for never ever using a fill. They are divorced. He kept her last name after the divorce. There is no bass player. When you hear what sounds like a bass, he is using a pedal to drop the sound of his guitar an octave. Do check out some of their other songs.

Jack builds his own guitars. He creates sounds this way. One of the greatest guitarists ever. Check out the documentary "It's About to Get Loud" featuring Jack White, Jimmy Page, and Edge. You'll better understand his music.

Lyrics: It begins, “leave me alone,” to, “find a home,” to, “go back home.” They (the lyrics) tell one long story, that’s why the chorus doesn’t repeat verbatim. 🎸🥁

I believe he is using a digitech whammy pedal. The pedal gives him an octave above and below the note he plays - giving him the bass and guitar parts in one. Then for the chorus riff he is using a fuzz pedal on top of that for the distortion.

The White Stripes are great this is actually the first song I ever heard of theirs and I love the riffs and beats, also another fact that its just the 2 of them that the both of them are actually brother and sister which I think is amazing as well

The White Stripes have a great collection of music spanning from 1998/99 to 2010/11. My favorite album, personally is Icky Thump, and you should check out basically any track from that record. Jack White also has a lot of solo work, as well as his side projects. His best known side project is definitely The Raconteurs, thanks to their hit “Steady as She Goes.” He’s also a member of the supergroup The Dead Weather- you should check out “I Cut Like a Buffalo.” He’s played drums for a band called Goober and the Peas, and has also been a member of the bands The Upholsterers and The Go (according to Wikipedia). But I’m not familiar enough with the last three bands to recommend any songs from them

Used to hate this band and then I caught a bit of their set as I was passing the stage at a festival and I've been a fan since, how 2 people can make so much noise always blows my mind

He used a bass string for the low E and used an open E tuning for the other 5 strings.

Jack White workshops his guitar tones to an exhaustive degree. There is so much thought in just the voice he gives his guitar beside what notes he plays.

This song is one of the last great folk songs in that everyone knows it but don’t necessarily know the name of the song. It’s a popular song for sporting events especially soccer.

Check out “icky thump” it’s another white stripes classic and “hotel yorba” is one of those underrated hidden gems people forget about. If you dig his sound then check out The raconteurs, the band he formed after the white stripes. Their big hit was “salute your solution” it’s high energy fun

yeah Jack White usually uses a few fx pedals to fill out the space. Usually a "P.O.G." by Electro harmonix (Poly Octave Generator) makes a guitar sound like a Bass guitar or an organ its cool. he likes Fuzz distortion too which definitely sounds wild and out of control (Hendrix used fuzz too) or the almost broken tone you can get from vintage gear pushed way past what it was intended for. the documentary "Its about to get loud" is quite good for a bit more guitar culture stuff.. Led Zep's guitarist and the edge from U2 are on there too ✌✌

There's an explanation to seven nation army.. lol. When I began learning bass through covid, I found this song & jack & fell down a deep rabbit hole. Since then, I'm a BIG FAN, 3.. lol. Ive done intense research on his lyrics. Interesting kat, for sure. Fun riff to play as well.
