This charity effort was put together by Lionel Ritchie (1st vocalist) & Michael Jackson, among others, to raise money for famine relief in Africa. A couple of mos. prior to this, Lionel had heard a similar event for the same cause, performed by superstars from the UK. That song is "Do They Know It's Christmas?", & they called themselves "Band-Aid". Well worth a listen. Thanks for your reaction.
@mrapp10143
@mrapp10143 11 месяцев назад
The idea was brought to Lionel Ritchie and MJ from Harry Belafonte after UK raised money for the famine in Africa with Do They Know it is Christmas. Ritchie snd MJ wrote the song. After the Academy Awards these people stayed and worked overnight to create this song. All the individual singers were winners that night(so instead of celebrating, they created this song). Yes, all of the artist in this song were/are icons. The mod 80s brought performers together for variety of reasons. Farm Aid(organized by Willie Nelson) to fight issues farmers in America were having. Hands Across America(also part of USA for Africa) fought children’s hunger in America. Live Aid(Queen gave unquestionably the best performance by a band that has and still has stood the test of time)(you should react to that video of you have t) was created to fight Ethiopian hunger. I believe you are right…todays performers would not leave their egos at the door and think above themselves. But these artist giving is something you should check out. Get familiar with music history.

In the 1980s, there was a terrible famine in Africa-largely in Ethiopia. Bob Geldoff from the British band The Boomtown Rats saw a news story about it and decided he needed to do something. He called up other musicians and asked them to participate. He and Midge Ure from the band Ultravox wrote the song, and Band Aid’s Do They Know Its Christmas? was released around Thanksgiving in 1984. A couple of months later, Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie (Richie?) wrote this song and got the others involved, even got Quincey Jones to produce it. The legendary Live Aid concert followed that summer in 1985. Two huge concerts in London and Philadelphia, playing to millions of people. All of these legends letting go of their egos, working together, for free. We really do need that kind of mentality back.

I doubt you'll see this. But I'm 48 years old. I remember when this happened. I am STILL brought to tears every time I see this, and especially so when someone newly discovers it. Here is the background. It was thrown together in a matter of days and was recorded just after the American Music Awards. Not one single artist was paid. It was a more-or-less hastily thrown together occurrence to get together as many stars as possible while they were all still in the same city. It was organized to try to fight the devastating, crippling famine happening in Ethiopia at the time. And unfortunately this will almost absolutely never happen again. This happened when allstars were able to set their egos and their record sales aside and say, "Let's do this as brothers and sisters in arms." That can't happen today. BTW, here's your background: Time codes indicate start of first solo Lionel Richie - 0:26 Stevie Wonder - 0:39 Paul Simon - 0:43 Kenny Rogers - 0:53 James Ingram - 0:59 Tina Turner - 1:06 Billy Joel - 1:13 Michael Jackson - 1:19 Diana Ross - 1:32 Dionne Warwick - 1:48 Willie Nelson - 2:02 Al Jarreau - 2:09 Bruce Springsteen - 2:15 Kenny Loggins - 2:21 Steve Perry - 2:28 Daryl Hall - 2:36 Huey Lewis - 2:48 Cyndi Lauper - 2:54 Kim Carnes - 3:02 Bob Dylan - 3:48 Ray Charles - 4:27 “We Are the World” Chorus (alphabetically) Dan Aykroyd Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Mario Cipollina Johnny Colla Sheila E. Bob Geldof, a British musician (his band was called. Boomtown Rats) saw news footage of drought and famine stricken Ethiopia. He was moved to do something to help the people of Ethiopia. He got together with Midge Ure of the band Ultravox and in the space of less than two months they coordinated musicians, got a song written and recorded it in time for Christmas. The song was called “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was a massive hit and proceeds went to help Ethiopia. Watch that video. They grabbed anyone that was in London at the time to sing and record the video. Kool & The Gang happened to be in London and even they are in the video. After seeing what the Brits pulled off, Harry Belafonte decided that the Americans needed to help as well. Collaborating with Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and MJ, they got to writing. They decided the only way to get all those famous people together was after the American Music Awards show. After the awards they all filed into the music studio to record. The one artist who refused to participate was Prince (but he contributed a song to the album). Other reactors have asked why wasn’t Whitney Houston there. She isn’t in this because nobody knew who she was yet. Her first hit came a few months later (although her auntie, Dionne Warwick, is singing in the video.) Famously, there was a sign put on the entrance saying “check your egos at the door.” We Are The World was a massive hit. The heavy metal community felt slighted because they weren’t asked to participate. Ronnie James Dio (one of the best voices to ever exist in any genre), put together a heavy metal version called Stars (also worth watching). The union of massive stars to support a cause set the ball rolling for Live Aid, a massive one day music festival on 2 continents. London and Philadelphia were the stages. Live Aid was simulcast on MTV, ABC, and radio stations and other outlets across the globe. This concert paved the way for Farm Aid, which was a gathering of mostly country artists to raise money to help America’s farmers, most of whom live in poverty. There have been updated versions of We Are The World for different causes over the years.

I was 9 when this came out in 1985. It was written by Micheal Jackson and Lionel Richie, who gathered famous musicians (and others) to record the song as a benefit for Africa (particularly Ethiopia, which was experiencing a severe famine at the time. Iwill never forget the pictures of the starving skeletonlike kids)..Through the sale of the album, I think they raised about 65 million dollars, which they then donated to various charities that could provide relief. Tjey didn't get any proceeds from it. I used to know all the lyrics, because our music teacher would always have us sing it in class. It always felt special to hear it played.

You should check out "Do They Know it's Christmas" by Band Aid which was another song made by a bunch of UK singers released a year before this one. That song led to this one. Many others had done the same afterwards but "Do They Know it's Christmas" and "We Are the World" will probably be the best. From what I read Harry Belefonte (one of the singers in the group and who just recently past away) decided to do an American version.

I'm a 1960 baby. This was my time in my 20's. So many artists who transformed my time. This, as you expressed, was a special moment in contemporary music. I challenge you to learn more about them. One of my favorite artists was Dionne Warwick who sang songs written just for her by Burt Bacharach in the 60's. If you haven't heard her, look up Alfie, A House Is Not A Home, Say A Little Prayer For Me, and many others.

I don't get how younger generations, who has the entire world at their fingertips with the internet, does not know who all of these Legends are other than Michael. I mean of course everybody knows Michael that goes without saying. But everybody else here is the foundation for all the music that you listen to today. This kind of collaboration could never happen now. Yes I am aware that they made a remake of the song with newer artists. But the difference is the artist werent of the same caliber as it was on this day. Now it would be about artist wanting to boost their careers, and most certainly would demand money. These are legends they have already made their careers, they didn't need anything from anybody and they did not get paid. Cuz in this day and age you actually did something to help people. The last collaboration I remember was after 9/11. But I don't believe they were all that together. These people have egos to but they were able to set that aside for the greater good. They were willing to not take top billing, and just contribute a line or two and then just be in the choir. also the difference is that you don't have a Michael Jackson today to put this together. Because only somebody of his power and his clout would be able to pull together all of these legends, help co-write the song and arrange it. There's just nobody that fits that today. My suggestion to you is to invest and watching some classic videos of legends that created the sound that you're used to. How anybody can't know Stevie Wonder or Lionel Richie I don't know. I just find it sad. To me that is just not a well-rounded musical education if you just want to stick to one era and not go out of your lane. Live a little and use the internet and learn about the people that came before all the artists today. You might learn something.

I agree with most of what you are saying. Yes, legends and all of it, but I think this young man is actually putting himself out here to learn and become familiar with our artists of yesteryear. I say that because many have passed unfortunately. Duane has verbalized something that no other reactor that I’ve seen has said, “We have lost our way.” Please give this young man credit. The only reason I knew music from the previous generation was because my mother played it in our house. I’m guessing his parents were probably not even playing 80’s music because they were too young themselves. Not his fault. Please don’t be sad for him. H😊e’s here and he’s trying to learn. And, learn, he has. Kudos for him and his heartfelt reaction which shows just how timeless and amazing this song and these artists are. Not bashing your comment, just adding to it.

As others have mentioned, no one was paid, and they were all legends of various genres. The song was a fundraiser for the "USA for Africa" charity to help with the famine in Africa after years of drought. It was written by Michal Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian, but it was the brain-child of singer / activist Harry Belafonte (best known for the Banana Boat song, "Day-Oh!") after the UK group Band Aid released "Do They Know It's Christmas" which was also a fundraiser for famine relief in Africa. It is apparently the 8th best-selling single of all time!

First there was a charitable effort in the UK, largely organized by Bob Geldof (who was later knighted for his efforts for famine relief), called Band Aid; a bunch of UK artists got together, all donating their time and talent, and made a song called "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which had, sadly, execrable lyrics, but a good message nevertheless. Then Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote this song and got people from the US involved to do the singing after the AMAs. Everyone, again, donated their time and talent; no one got paid for contributing to USA for Africa. Then there was Live Aid, the globally televised (simulcast) concert on two continents at once, part in Wembley Stadium in London, and part in JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Again, no one was paid, everyone contributed their time and talent, and Elton John took the Concorde from England to Philadelphia so he could perform in both stadiums, on his own dime. Queen had the best set of the day (some say in history); U2, just starting to hit it big at the time, had the second best set and it put them on the map permanently. Both of those sets are available on RU-vid in their entirety, and both are worth watching/reacting to. Live Aid alone raised $127M for famine relief. Band Aid raised $9M off of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" USAforAfrica.org has raised over $168,000,000 over 35 years for poverty relief in Africa, Haiti, and the US (not just for famine relief in Eithiopia), and administers its funds separately from the Band Aid Trust, which controls the funds raised by Band Aid and Live Aid. However, civil war in Eithiopia led to nearly 90-95% of the money that had been raised for famine relief and controlled by the Band Aid Trust being used by the dictator in control of the country at the time (the country ousted him in 1994 and became a constitutional democracy with a prime minister in charge) to slaughter rebel forces and ultimately made the famine worse, not better. Doctors Without Borders, the famous humanitarian group, was kicked out of Eithiopia for standing up for the victims against the regime. SPIN magazine and the BBC both covered this awful result, and at first they were demonized for it, but as more news organizations looked into the accusations and discovered the truth, it slowly got out over time. Although the dictator was later ousted, as noted, the country is still not politically stable and armed conflict continues. The US State Department warns against Americans traveling to the country, though travel there is not banned, as parts of the country are uncontrolled by any form of government and unsafe. Periodic droughts continue to make famine a danger. As of August 2022, there were 13 million Eithiopians facing acute food insecurity, and an estimated 150,000-200,000 had died of starvation by March 2022. In the Tigray Region alone, 89% of people were in need of food aid.

The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie with Quincy Jones conducting and he was also a producer on the album. This was inspired by the UK’s Band Aid. There are stories that some of the Band Aid money may have been redirected to buy weapons for Ethiopian warrlords but that should not diminish these musicians efforts to raise money to aid in the famine in Africa. The publicity for We Are The World, Band Aid, and Live Aid inspired other nations to contribute as well. This needs to be continued as there is still acute famine all over the world. There is too much money in certain groups in this country and other countries for there to be even one child going hangry.

How did this happen? Well, there was a terrible draught going on in Africa at that time, and British pop singers (lead by Bob Geldof) produced the song, "Do They Know It's Christmas" and profits of that song went to help people starving from the draught (Do They Know It's Christmas had fewer singers, but they did include George Michael and Bananarama). that inspired Harry Belafonte (Google him; he was in the back row) came up with the idea of doing the same with American singers. And on the We Are the World album, they included a song called "Tears Are Not Enough" that included an all-star cast of Canadian singers. And we haven't completely lost our way, because they actually did recreate this a couple more times. One was done after the earthquake in Haiti, and singers on that included Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Justin Beiber, and a lot of others I can't remember right now. If also included a new rap solo that included most of the rappers of that time (including a Haitian rapper, but his rap style was hard for American audiences to appreciate).
