This guy opened up black rap to be accessible to white teenagers - especially with their parents. 'He seems like such a nice well groomed boy.' That's important to suburban mom's. They didn't make the connection to thug culture until Tupac etc were popped. But for at least a few years while Vanilla Ice was cool, the genre took root and grew.

This isn't sampled... it's stolen. Ice had a bass player play the riff with one xtra note, so he could claim it was different. I think he wound up buying the rights to under pressure from queen so he wouldn't have to pay them royalties Edit- i shall correct myself after some research... he paid $4M for the publishing rights to Under Pressure because the possible long court case could have cost him more than that and then he would have had to pay royalties on top of it

Vanilla is technically considered a one hit wonder, but like all one hit winders when he was hot there were 2 or 3 other tracks that were almost as big. In Vanilla case they were "I love you" "hooked" and later "Ninja Rap" from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II which was probably the biggest movie in the world at the time. Most people don't realize how he kept going and still makes music to this day. My Vanilla playlist is 42 songs long from "Ice Ice Baby" to "All the Way In" released just last year with Forgatio Blow and Kodak Black. V.I.P. forever. Word to tlur mutha!

It is time we give Robert his flowers. No, he wasn’t the greats that came around his time and after but he encapsulated a moment in the early 90’s that can’t be compared to the GOATs of hip hop. It got corny once the greats took over the airways (due to finally being able to be played in some places) but decades later we can appreciate the importance of this moment and the absolute ear worm he created for us to bop to along with Baby Got Back. 3 decades later and I still know every single word to ice ice baby even if I hadn’t heard it in years.
