My grandad was in the war that year. The young men at his funeral knew who he was, respected him so much they got nervous folding the flag, had to refold it before giving it to his daughter (my aunt). I cry all the time and it's okay. You'll be okay, honey. ❤

I'm 57, my dad died when I turned 21. I did CPR on him. Planned his funeral helping my mom who could not deal with it. My mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer 6 months later. I was the oldest and my youngest sibling was 12. Very difficult but follow your emotions through the pain. Joy comes again. 💜

May you forever be lifted up. I'm 73. I have lost many of my family, including my son when he was just 27. The best words I can share with are about a tapestry. If you look at a tapestry from the back side it is a mess. But when you see the front side, you understand. All colors make no sense from the back of the tapestry. On the front side, you understand each positive and negative of events, like threads make a beautiful picture. We all have those moments. Sometimes, just sitting next to the one grieving is enough to give them strength. No words are needed. Your experience will be a strength to others. As you described his life, make that yours! You are his son, let him continue to live on through you. May you be blessed for being so transparent with your feelings. At this moment, you are the voice of humanity to itself.

Thankyou for sharing. I lost my dad when I was 8 years old back in 1966. My big brother passed away at 29. My mom passed in 2009 and my last brother in 2010 from cancer. I miss them all so much and I pray I will be reunited with them all one day. It’s hard to not cry when I think of them. They were all military connected my dad US Airforce. My mom British army, my big brother was US Army fought in Vietnam and my other brother was US Airforce in Desert Storm. God knows how much I miss them but I will see them again one day. God bless you brother. My son was killed by a drunk driver in 2014. He was 33 years old and my only child. They are worth our grief and our tears. But remember to look to the Lord when it becomes unbearable. God will sometimes send a storm to bring light to your life. Look to Him. God bless you always.

My papa(moms dad) passed in April '98. I took emergency leave from Marine Corps boot camp PISC and flew to Tampa for his funeral. He taught me a lot and I loved him so much! I've cried in my lifetime bc of physical pain I've endured but this song hit my heart so hard bc it was played at his funeral and many of my family held me. I walked up to the casket and kissed him on his forehead and said 'i love you papa'. I was pulled out of the pew and put in line with the paulbearers to carry him from the church to the herse and then to the gravesite. My was also a WWII Navy veteran who served on the battleship USS North Carolina. It's been a little over 26 years ago that we lost him but the memories are still there. I miss him still but I know when I go to be with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I will see his face again!

1996. Middle of West Texas. My father had passed a month before. I was working the oil rigs. Went home for the funeral. I was so doped out and messed up. Numb from it all. Middle of nowhere and this tune came on. Never heard it before. I had to pull over because the tears and grief overtook me. I decided then, I had to stop living like this. My father warned me about living this way. Now. Everytime I hear this. He is with me. Funny how a song can change a man's mind and heart.

From what I understand Vince was originally writing this song to honor Keith Whitley, a country music singer that died in his 30s due to Alcohol abuse. However while writing the song he lost his brother and dedicated the song to his brother. There's a GREAT VERSION of this song in which Patty Loveless sings with him. Vince gets VERY EMOTIONAL and even has to walk away from the microphone a couple times. Patty Loveless does a GREAT job of stepping in when Vince's emotions get the best of him. Its TRULY an emotional song that often brings tears to my eyes.

I lost my husband in 2021. He was the kindest person to me as his partner, and to the people around him. He had the most beautiful laugh… it was infectious. Donald went through the most trauma in his life, more than anyone I have ever known, but he made sure that everyone who h3 encountered that needed someone had someone. It didn’t matter how big or small the issue was. He gave everything, and he made every person important. This song was played at a lot of southern funerals that he and I had to attend for his close family, and I had to play it at his. This brings back so many feelings and memories. As much as he maybe wouldn’t have wanted this song played it’s so intertwined in us, and in him as a person. Thank you so much for sharing this and being vulnerable. I feel less alone in my grief. I know your loss. I died twice within a few hours. The second time, it took a while to get me back and I crossed. I was walking through a meadow with my parents on each side of me. Both were young and healthy. They were escorting me to home. I was so mad when the doctors pulled me back. But I can tell you for a fact (not just faith) that we will be reunited one day in a land of no sorrow and pain. Living here in a human body is the price we all pay for that eternal life. Love you.

I lost my baby boy in 2020 and he was only 32, and his dad is the one who took his life! My sons ghost is here with me and he told me his dad was the one who overdosed him and took his life. My son told me if I want to see him again I have to ask God to forgive and get rid of the hate I feel for what his father did. I have had a terrible time trying to do what my son asked of me. But a friend told me I have only to ask God for forgiveness. I miss my son everyday! The hurt for you is new, but I know God will help us all, and that he took my son to release him from his pain but it is so so hard with him gone!! His name was Justin and he had just turned 32 ten days before he was gone. He was born 4/16/88 and gone 4/26/2020. Prayers to you and broken hearts take a long time to heal if ever. Your video touched my heart ❤️ but it still is hard to lose someone and they have a name for people who lose a parent, or a spouse, but there is no name for someone who loses a child. He was such a sweet boy, he would do anything for someone if he could. God got a good one when he got my baby boy. Only the good die young is so true when you lose a child. Thank you for your video. Afterwords my brother came in and asked his wife to take BreeAnna- my daughter-. That is when they told me my mother had passed I was in such a state I couldn't even breast feed. 😢 I felt like my daughter got my mother's life. You know? I was loosing a life but gaining one too. She even has my mom's initials- BJJ. HER middle my daughter's middle name is JOY because she brought me so much Joy at such a difficult time. But and someone told me when they were hugging me . Vince's lyrics are heartfelt and moving and his guitar work is, as always topnotch. Also his lovely tenor voice. I've always been a fan of Vince's. Vince Gill originally wrote this song about Keith Whitley, a fellow country singer who passed away suddenly due to alcohol poisoning, hence the reference in the first verse, "You were no stranger to the rain," one of Keith Whitley's biggest known songs was, "I'm No Stranger To The Rain." Then, Vince Gill's brother passed away and that's when I believe he released this song. Either way a beautiful song.

Vince added another verse to this song that sometimes gets overlooked, here are the words: You're safely home in the arms of Jesus Eternal life my brother's found The day will come I know I'll see him in that sacred place on holy ground. Vince sung this at George Jones's funeral. He was so emotional Patty Loveless had to help him sing his part of the song. He pulled himself together and gave George a beautiful improvised send off.

I remember watching hing that, he kept the guitar rhythm going, talked through part of it till he could start singing again. She kept the harmony going, and I seem to remember her patting him on the back in sympathy.

New subscriber here. My heart goes out to you & your family. I'm 65 & miss my Dad every day. We lost this amazing man Sept. 2017. It feels like yesterday. My mother mentioned having Go Rest High On That Mountain to be sung at his funeral, but we hadn't made the final decision. That day the hospice nurse stopped by our home to check on Dad and she asked if she could sing a song for us. We gathered around my father and that was the song she sung. Not a dry eye in the room. I'll never forget it or her kindness. May your father rest in peace. This is a song I found after his funeral that I find comforting. Dani & Lizzy - "Dancing in the Sky". Condolences to your family.

My Dad got sick when I was 15. He died when I was 22. In November, he will have been gone 30 years. There are times, not always, but there are still times, that this song (and one or two others) comes on the radio and I have to pull over. It DOES get better. But it never goes away. That's the mark of a life well lived. They live on through us. My recommendation would be, "Hold On to Memories" by Disturbed. The live version is very good, but the official video tells a story. A trio performed this at my Moms funeral. The word Son was replaced with child, but it perfectly described my Mom. My father had a stroke in his 30s due to alcoholism. She brought him home taught him to walk, speak, everything. The irony is she was getting ready to leave him when this happened. She cared for him along with raising her 3 children when this happened. She is and always will be a better woman than me. After 15 years I still miss her so much. May God comfort you and wrap his arms around you.

He doesn't just send you robotic replies that feel like he's sent everyone the same message. He actually takes time to personally reply to YOU. He has really been a blessing to me personally. I will be anxious to see his upcoming reaction. I didn't know someone had requested this video, but I thought about this song today as I was watching some of his other videos. I knew he liked Home Free, so I had requested Home Free's version of this song before he released this video! My grandmother passed not long after this song came out ... she had toxic shock from breast cancer and wanted to pass at home ... she was a stubborn lady who had to have her way... at 5 am I sat beside her and played this song ... with tears flowing she took her last breath at the end of this song ... I get chills every time I hear this song ....

I lost my grandmother December 2022. She was the woman who raised me, and this was her favorite song. This is the first time I could bring myself to listen to it since her memorial, and I chose you to listen to it with me. I still can't think of her without crying and feeling that fresh pain as though I just found out. She meant everything to me, and I'll never stop missing her. Never apologize for feeling. I am so glad I came across this video. I had forgotten about this song. It blesses me. I just lost my Daddy in May 2023. I am fortunate to have been able to assist in caretaking of him. He was a loving, kind, funny Dad who not only loved us but liked us too. He was 92 and told us on his 92nd birthday he didnt think he'd make it to his next one but wanted us to know he loved us and appreciated everything we did for him. He passed away 11 days later. This song is a blessing. Thank you so much.🙏♥️

Vince sang this for fellow singer and friend, Keith Whitley’s passing. Then he sang it upon his own brother’s death. Patty Loveless helped Vince get through it for George Jones’ memorial tribute. Beautiful and deeply meaningful song.

I lost my mom and dad within four months of each other. The loss of your foundation is difficult to rebuild. You have such a positive message. Glad I found your channel. James Blunt has a song he wrote when his father was diagnosed with cancer called Monsters. I cried replaying that song for two hours after losing my dad and my mom four months prior. Music is cathartic. We all feel your heartache.

It’s so hard , I didn’t appreciate my Mom like I should have . It took a year before I could deal with it . Then 2022 my son dies , a different feeling of grief & guilt. Did I teach him enough about our Lord . I believe he’s with God . Because as a friend called him , he’s a pure soul . My son & I were very close unlike with Mom . She wasn’t affectionate, yet she met our needs . Picture perfect 50’s Mom .

My daughter called me wile I was watching your video so I needed to stop because she needed me . When I hear this song, I think of my mother, she lived a hard life never knew true happiness on this side of heaven , other than her children and grandchildren her brothers sisters , I know she’s on that mountain. I know she’s hearing the angels sing. And I think I remember that it won some very well-deserved awards. I saw a story that even Vince couldn't get through the song without tearing up when he and Patty Loveless sang it at George Jones memorial service.

He sounds like a beautiful man with such a loving heart, and you have clearly inherited that from him. I lost my only brother in 2019 and my mom less than a year later in 2020. Vince wrote this song about his own brother who passed away, and of course I think of my own brother every time I hear it. Yes, I am crying with you. May God Bless you and surround you with comfort and peace. You have a hole in your heart that will never be filled, but you will grow beauty and life around that hole, and you know that is what your dad wants for you.❤
