So Chamillionare actually said Al is amazing and he loved this song. He also said Al is a legitimately great rapper. Pretty awesome getting praise from the original artist
Yes, Al is an extremely good rapper. If you're familiar with the musical Hamilton You should check out his Hamilton Polka. He takes the fastest rap from the show, speeds it up, and does it in five part harmony. It's amazing.
Dude has won a Grammy in every decade he's worked. He's probably one of the best musicians this country has produced, and he exclusively does parody and polka.
Not true. Yes, he’s known for his parodies, and yes, he typically includes a medley of popular tunes done as a polka (and a few other styles included as well), but a good bit of his material is original.
Saw him last summer and he and the band played their non parody originals. What shocked me was that it was actually such good, solid music on its own. No need for the humor. I was really amazed.
@@YaelleG Oh, there's humour. All his originals are funny too, just not specifically parodying another song. Most of them do parody the STYLE of a particular artist though, sometimes called a 'pastiche'. "Dog Eat Dog" is a Talking Heads pastiche. Mr. Popeil is the B-52s. Velvet Elvis is The Police, and Biggest Ball of Twine is Harry Chapin.
@@playfulpanthress Most of his original material is in the style of another well-known artist. "Trigger Happy" is early Beach Boys. "Pancreas" is late Beach Boys.
I think the story with the videos was that MJ wrapped filming early and because he paid for an extra day or two, he asked Al if he wanted to film his video for Bad that day.
I think My Bologna was actually 1979. That's the song that got him signed to Capitol, they thought he was going to be a one-hit wonder. 44 years later and this dude's a legend.
Donny Osmond (the guy dancing behind Al) did that whole thing in one take. Al never saw him and was glad he didn’t because he said he would’ve busted up laughing. 😂
"Weird Al" is the real deal. He's one of the nicest people EVER. He does so much for fans, veterans, active military, children. He's incredible. He's very private, but very connected to his public/fans. His music skills are off the hook! I've seen him live and he just SLAYS.
Being very private it what makes him a legend. It's a sign of a good artist " I do what it do, I'm good at it. You don't need to know my drama, life outside of my job, how I do what I"
Donny Osmond has some legendary moments poking fun at himself. There's an old Johnny Bravo Christmas Special that he's featured in and his bits are hilarious.
There is a video that is the while song of Donny dancing in the back amd at the end Weird Al just loses it. How he kept a straight fave through Donny just being ridiculous I will never know.
He's also a rare musician who, despite the decades-long career, fame, and money; hasn't had a single scandal (Amish Paradise doesn't count, Coolio apologized for that one).
Basically coolio’s producer gave the “ok” so weird Al’s team assumed that the producer covered all his bases, so it was kind of an apology because coolio thought they didn’t get permission, but it was more coolio’s team who messed up.
He was single or had low key girlfriends for pretty much most of his life then got married about 23 years ago and had a daughter. They're still married, his daughter is about 20 now. He's never had a drug or alcohol issue, never had a relationship issue with another woman, he loved his parents and was close to them until they died, and he's been a vegetarian for like 30 years. Like Al once said, "I've never done drugs, I've never drank, I've never had to go to rehab, and I've never bought a hooker. So why does VH1 want to do a Behind the Music on me?"
Wierd Al is underrated as a rapper and extremely creative. Obviously parody but imagine if he ever did a diss song….imagine that 👀… there’s a reason no one challenges this dude. 😂
*Weird Al* has been doing this for 40 effing years he's parody nearly every popular artists. Many describe they know they've made it when *Weird Al* has parodied one of their songs
The crazy thing about this song is its sort of a way to measure how nerdy you are. The more references you recognize the more nerdy you are. Some are quite easy ones that most people get but then there are a few that require some serious big brain intelligence.
It's funny --- I knew of this song for quite awhile, but never really listened to the lyrics in any serious, analytical capacity. I'm honestly shocked by the number of references I understood --- I'm questioning my life choices right now lol
I didn't know about the Star Wars Holiday Special one until Jontron did an episode on it - and I'm a bit of a Star Wars fan - turns out, it's a not so great piece of Star Wars media.
I always liked "Its All About The Pentiums". Al doesn't just do a parody for fun. He really DOES a song. He puts his whole soul into it, and becomes the protagonist. Never knew anyone to be so serious about being so funny. I've been a fan since "My Bologna" that he played on an accordion in his school bathroom to get the reverb effect.
@DarkTitan I think you've underestimated the staying power of Weird Al. I was born in 91 and had Bad Hair Day on cassette. Dude was such a huge part of my childhood, and I think that goes for most of not all of my friends.
Weird Al always asks permission to parody anyone, and a couple of artists love his work enough they were in concert and had to concentrate to make sure they sang their own song indtead of his. Donny Osmond as a backup dancer makes this more hilarious as he has always been the singer and he's nerding out as a dancer.
The best part about that is that he has no obligation to do that. Parody laws are pretty loose, you don't even need the original artist's permission to make a parody of their work for profit. But he's such a kind person, he makes the effort anyway.
@@onionbubs386 Wrong, any money you make off a copy of a copywrited song must be shared with songwriter - unless they give you permission of course. Plenty of cases haven been won by artists claiming another artist ripped off their art because a few notes sound kinda the same.
The Osmonds did plenty of singing and dancing on their TV shows back in the day - Donny's always been a dancer, not at all nerdy, Al said he wanted Donny in this video because he's the Whitest guy Al could think of.
I love that The Presidents of the United States of America changed the last line in their song, "Lump," in concerts to match Weird Al's final line in his parody, "Gump," because they just loved it that much!
Like A Surgeon, Amish Paradise, Another One Rides The Bus, My Bologna, Eat It, Fat, The White Stuff (in the middle of an Oreo), Taco Grande (Rico Suave), All About The Pentiums, Smells Like Nirvana man I've been jamming on Weird Al nearly 40 yrs now!
I'm sure that you guys don't know this, but Weird AL is a literal GENIUS... He has a genius level I.Q. (I think over 160... Can't recall the exact number; but I know it's HIGH); it's high enough for him to be a member of MENSA (a National organization for Brainiac's/Smart people). 🙂
@@snowfloofcathug Top 2 percent on any standarized IQ test. Seems pretty high to me. Other hand, I've been a member myself - that fact and $2.50 will buy you a bottomless cup of coffee at any Denny's in the country.
@@snowfloofcathug That's all a matter of perspective. It's the top 2% If you test well and thus have an unusually high IQ score, it might not seem like a high threshold. For a lot of the population l, though, it's very high.
Came here to say this!!! Classic. I love how Donnie has a sense of humor about himself. Also, "Be a Man" from Mulan is my fave Diney movie tune and it's partlly because he sings the F*** out of it.
"I Lost On Jeopardy" by Weird Al is legitimately one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Not sure if the humor translates to your generation, but for those that were around in the early to mid 80s, it hits hard.
I was in preliminary rounds to be a Jeopardy contestant back in the 90s. Things were going really well until I started glitching over answers I should have known. When all I could hear was Weird Al’s “I lost at Jeopardy” running through my brain I just started to laugh and walked away.
When Michael Jackson found out that Al wanted to do Eat it to parody beat it, he had his choreographer work with Al’s damn era and Al to get all the moves right and he had his team rebuild the beat it set for Al. Al has been doing this for over 40 years. True talent. Check out Fat - MJ’s Bad Word crimes ( blurred lines) Amish paradise Living with a hernia It’s all about the pentiums Trapped in the drive thru.
"Hardware Store" has no business going as hard as it does. Then again, the same can be said for a lot of nerdcore on RU-vid as well, especially the Stupendium - "No One's Home" comes to mind...
Besides Key and Peele, the cast includes: 2:58 Actor Seth Green as the action figure guy 3:48 Singer and entertainer Donny Osmond as the dancer guy 3:51 Stand-up comedian and actor Judy Tenuta as the surge protector lady
He's in an epic rap battle as sir Isaac Newton...he is a master at his craft I'd suggest looking up more from him. He's been doing this stuff since the 80s and hasn't stopped yet.
If it hasn't been mentioned before, Weird Al absolutely slays with crazy fast bars (like Eminem "Rap God" or "Godzilla" fast) on his song "Hardware Store". There's no official music video for it to my knowledge but you'll want the lyric version anyways. Enjoy!
Something very cool about Weird Al was that he never required licensing to create his music. He would personally sell his pitch, ask for permission, and if they said no, he moved on. Eventually his name was so unbelievably widespread that a cover of his, would make originals pop-off generating original artists' revenue. It was a better time. Creativity is WHO the guy is.
@@islandmankWell, no, there were others, but it was generally linked to some particular issue. "Chicken Pot Pie" got a no, for example, because "Live and Let Die"'s original artist was vegetarian-the irony being that Al had turned vegetarian by this time, too, but he just thought it was funny anyway, lol. Eminem strangely gave multiple yeses to album tracks but a no to "Couch Potato"'s video, for another example.
I've been listening to Weird Al for over 30 years. He is an insanely talented musician, especially when it comes to rap. He's also unofficial metric of success in the music industry; if he parodies one of your songs, you _know_ you've made it. Amish Paradise, Eat It, Fat, Tacky, Smells Like Nirvana, Word Crimes, Trapped In The Drive-Thru... There are so many great songs.
I've told our younger daughters that when we die, White and Nerdy is to be played at my husband's funeral and Tacky for mine...lol....my best theme song.
Gentlemen, I submit for your consideration: 'Hardware Store' by Weird Al, it's one of his original songs and will absolutely blow your minds. On the subject of ERB: 'Vlad the Impaler vs Dracula', 'Clint Eastwood vs Bruce Lee', 'Muhammed Ali vs Michael Jordan', and 'Thor vs Zeus' are all excellent choices, but ERB really only has like two or three that AREN'T awesome. Edit: Nevermind, I'm stupid. Start with 'Moses vs Santa Claus', you won't be sorry.
I was listening to Weird Al when I was 12. And now y'all are saying you've known of him since you were younger. I feel like I'm I'm old AF but Al is like iconic for being there for multiple generations. Funny dude, but honestly a really, really good musician. This one is always gonna make me laugh!
@@thorkagemob1297 he got started in the 70s. There's a radio show "Dr. Demento" who played Al's first songs but yeah, by the early 80s, he had some fame and us kids (especially us nerdy kids) loved him.
@@shanehebert396 Dr. Demento is where I first heard Weird Al back in the 70s. Been a fan ever since. Genius in France is probably my favorite because I'm also a big Frank Zappa fan. It's supposedly so difficult that he and the band can't play it live.
@@otherkorean It was 1979 when I heard "My Bologna" on the Dr. D show. I was a sophomore or junior in HS. Been a fan ever since. I was lucky enough to see him live at the Greek Theatre in Hollywood, with my son. It was the Poodle Hat tour in 2003. He and his band are all amazing musicians. I'm white and nerdy myself, so this is one of my very favorites of his.
I'd argue that what he does is harder than what most musicians do. He's not just bound by the beat- he's bound by the beat, The syllable count, total line count, beat changes, and more. He sticks to all of the patterns of the original songs, But completely changes the lyric scheme. That's damn near impossible, yet this dude has won like five Grammys doing it. It's absolutely incredible.
The first Weird Al song I heard was when I was a kid in the 80s: "Eat It" - a parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It". After that there was a slew of songs. In the early 90s he spoke with Kurt Cobain on the phone about doing a parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Cobain wondered if it was gonna be about food. Weird Al said something to the effect that it was gonna be about how no one knows the lyrics to your songs. Other artists have gone on record saying they were honored when approached by Weird Al because that is a sight that you're "made it" as an artist.
I've been blessed to see him live TWICE, thanks to my BFF. He's equally as talented recorded or live. And he's known for going out into the audience, and making sure people can afford his tickets and merch. 💜
Its amazing how this man has legitimate skills. . .and chooses to use them ironically. Can we give this man the respect he deserves for being such a legend
The two parodies he did of Michael Jackson were Eat It (Beat It) and Fat (Bad)…and they are spot on perfect…and MJ loved them! Michael even helped Al to be able to use the same location for his parody of Bad that HE used!
Weird Al is so funny! I must say, he could actually be a rapper. He is really good with his lyrical flow! I have been a Weird Al fan for almost 40 years.
Love this parody because not not only shows how good he is as an artist but as a rapper as well because he perfectly matches 2 different rappers flows which is no small thing
Weird Al is legitimately an extremely talented writer and rapper. And the fact that he parodies the videos as well is next level. The man is beyond talented and is loved across decades of music.
Good stuff right there! Yall should do a reaction video to Anthrax and Public Enemy "Bring the noise" its an awesome metal/hip-hop collaboration. Love your videos my dudes and looking forward to more!
Yall should check out "like a surgeon","Smells like Nirvana",It's all about the Pentiums",Trapped in the Drive-thru by Wierd AL just to name a few you won't be disappointed 💛
The poorly dancing guy behind him is Donnie Osmond. He's also pretty famous. He and his sister Marie used to sing in the 70's. Weird AL is a parody legend!
The guy dancing behind him is Donny Osmond of the Osmond Brothers a group of white brothers similar to the Jackson 5 they were considered wholesome in the 70's 😮
OMG! I'm White and Nerdy! All totally fair shots! LOL I actually only watched some of the originals after hearing the parody. Thanks guys! I love this one.
He always gets permission from the people he parodies. Most people LOVE it. Michael Jackson loved it so much he gave Weird Al free rein to parody any of his songs.
The Star Wars Holiday special isn't a bootleg per se, just impossible to find to the point of having to have someone steal it if you want it. It was a TV special that was never released on VHS or DVD to the public. The only copy ever made on VHS was for and in the possession of Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and since she died is part of her estate. At the time of making this song and video, she was still alive, so if you wanted to take possession of the one genuine copy of the tape, which would be absolutely top tier nerd cred, you'd have to have someone go steal it from her home.
I love all the little things going in this video. Key and Peele in the car, Seth Green with the action figures and the ass slap, Donny Osmand dancing. The red flares shaped like Pacman when he's dressed like Chamillionaire. Key and Peele locking the door despite being in a convertible. The vulcan sign at the end. And more I know I missed. I don't know who the guys were at the bowling alley or that flipped him off in the park or the guy who sold him the Star Wars VHS tape. I had to slow it down and stop it, but the questions on the Trivial Pursuit card are hysterical. They're obviously fake.
Like so many things Weird Al puts in his videos, the door-locking joke actually works on two levels. Yes, it's a convertible, so locking the doors doesn't do anything. But locking the doors is the stereotypical reaction of middle-class and above white people when they find themselves in an African -American neighborhood. Reversing it that way just cranks up the funny.
The brown-haired guy doing the ridiculous dancing (wearing the leather jacket or whatever) is a singer/actor named Donny Osmond. He was SO excited to be in this video. Additionally, the redhead dude in the scene with the action figures is Seth Green.
That is literally Donny Osmond dancing with him when he's dressed like Eminem, I never noticed that before and I have seen this video a few times. He Thug Life on that White and Nerdy. LOL!
OMG, your faces when it first started! LOL! That was hilarious! Guy was valedictorian of his high school graduating class. Can't be stupid and be that talented.
