The song is describing a type of car that pimps and drug dealers used to drive in the seventies.Lincoln mk V and Cadillac El Dorados were popular examples.They had a sunroof with a vinyl (landau)top that covered the rear window leaving a small opening in the middle,typically in the shape of a heart or a diamond ,hence the term Diamond in the Back. The tires had wide white walls. The message he is sending is that you don't have to have,or strive for these material things in order to be somebody.👍

Many folks mistakenly think this track is the great Curtis Mayfield. There is even a video of this song on RU-vid that's labeled Curtis Mayfield and has Curtis picture and has millions of views. This cut is a stone cold classic.

RU-vid should have made the person who posted that video take the photo down.I love Curtis Mayfield(RIP)but I'm sure he wouldn't want credit for someone else's work.✌

@Rag yes love Curtis too but hate when people post things incorrectly. They should do their research first, and You Tube should pull it down

You on FIRE today with the reactions....this is a 1974 MONSTER JAM....one of the great hits from the 70s....William was a one hit wonder but what a hit....just a sidenote....love how you judge music by production value.....lol....back in the day nobody thought about production they just loved a great jam....i just find that funny....damn youngins

Back in the day I think we concentrated more on the message of the song and the production came natural to us. We knew a great sound when we heard it. The message was our salvation....

I think it's great when tv and movies keep great old music alive. So many RU-vid videos of great songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s, the comment section is filled with people who heard it somewhere else and liked it so much, they searched out the original. It's one way of passing on the greats to the next generation! :-)

I remember going to my grandparents in NYC in the '70's and yes, you really would see "Superfly" Cadillac Eldorado's. I remember one time driving alongside one as a kid and actually being in awe of it! Purple, diamond in the back, Rolls-Royce style front-end, and fur lined interior. Now they're show cars!

Are you working your way through my record collection? LOL! This track means more to me than I can express in words. My only criticism is that you played the edited version that was released on 45. Do yourself and your viewers a favour and play the LP version. BTW this track was much sampled which no doubt explains your vague familiarity with it.

Oh yeah, that intro... and , 'though you may not drive a great big Cadillac...' but remember brothers and sisters you can still stand tall'. One hit wonder, I believe. In my 20's driving to work and home and this would come on the radio, crank up the volume and sing at the top of my lungs and put me in an immediate good mood. TY

This song was a perfect reflection of the Message-laden '60's and '70's and the lead was a perfect imitation of one of its major proponents - Curtis Mayfield - but this is only 1/2 of the song. (The full version was incorrectly listed as "Diamond In The Back" by Curtis Mayfield!) - You MUST listen to the full version!!!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZVANQheoRUw.html. It features instrumentation by MFSB/Salsoul Orchestra featuring Vince Montana on vibes, who also can be heard on the full version of "I'm In Heaven" by Touch of Class: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g58KMdaeCro.html and "Run Away" by Loleatta Holloway ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8F11MygY7sk.html. And, speaking of Curtis Mayfield, to appreciate his genius, please check out "Check Out Your Mind" (when he was leader of The Impressions): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YiamtLrx1RU.html, "We're A Winner" (from that same period): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ikrLWEcDyGg.html, "Don't Worry (If There's A Hell Below, We're All Gonna Go)": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MnCpX4qRzCk.html and "Move On Up": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Z66wVo7uNw.html. Curtis was considered the "Martin Luther King" of Black music and The Last Poets, the "Malcolm X" (before Public Enemy).

It me, saw the album cover with Curtis on it. Not trying to discredit anyone. If it’s wrong information then maybe you should go about telling someone in a different manner that information isn’t correct and why it’s not correct. Not trying to take anything away from anyone. Very nice song from my youth. I bought it had Devaugh’s name on it, later thought I’d made a mistake when I saw Curtis’ face on the album. Take your anger out on the person responsible for that. I love the 🎵 song. No offense really.

@@patriciadavis5939 Don't take it personal. The problem is that it's disturbing how one person was able to fool literally millions of people with one fake RU-vid video. It proves how easily a lie can become accepted as the truth today. Even more disturbing is that so many people don't care what the real truth is.
@patriciadavis5939
@patriciadavis5939 2 года назад
Calm down. I have agreed that the statement I made was not fact. I’m not one who tries to take away credit from those who create songs. I’m from a family of writers so I understand. There are spots on the internet that give’s Curtis the credit for this good peace of music from yesteryear. When bought to my attention I quickly gave brother DeVaughn credit. He’s fortunate to have fans that are loyal to him. Mr. Mayfield is not the creator of this jam.
