I just saw this comment. Heartbreaking. No-one deserves what he had to experience. Poor guy. Nothing but pure respect for your club and fans even though Im a utd fan. Cant imagine those poor people heading to a game that day not knowing what was to happen. Kenny Dalglish showed more courage and class than I think most people realise. Attending funerals. And it wasnt like alot of things we see where the leaders appear. It truly affected him. Even now, as rivals, to me it'l always be Liverpool. Arsenal/City/Chelsea will be around but its Liverpool who ive more respect for. And moments like Hillsborough make us all realise we are all the same , just have a connection inside with a certain club. RIP Andrew Devine

The attitude taken by the then Margaret Thatcher government, about the people of Liverpool, and not helped by the sun newspaper, caused a massive feeling of ostracism in Liverpool, that still exists today. The people have huge amount of pride amongst themselves. It was a disgrace what happened, and how it was dealt with afterwards. I was alive at the time, and a was a Liverpool fan, as I am today, funnily enough. Every football match at the time had the very real threat of violence, and we were locked into cages in the terraces. Thatcher’s government did make many mistakes, but they weren’t, by far, the only culprits to what happened that day, and the reaction. I was in front of my tv at home, at 11, a month before my 12th birthday, with my Liverpool shirt, shorts, socks, and even football boots on. I was transfixed. My first memory, I might add, in life, not just football, is of the ‘1984 Heysel Stadium disaster’. I was on holiday in a caravan with my family. I was 6. I watched the violence, Platini cheat to win (which made me a lifelong red) but later heard about the deaths. I thought, at not even 12, I was watching it happen all over again. It was fing traumatic, man. Still is😢 YNWA Edit I’m from 25-30 miles from Anfield, close enough to persuade my local town team supporting dad to take me to Anfield, everytime his team were away from home, in exchange for going to that darn 💩 hole every other week, not only watching that dross, but listening to the pathetic Un-creative repetitive songs, sang like they wrote them themselves. It was an almost unrecognizable, pale, almost absurd, version of Anfield😂 😂 😂 Oh, the memories. I saw the ‘89, Arsenal last kick of the season loss of our title, live too. So, some bad, some really bad, but some so good, they’re life affirming to this day🥲

Politicians and leaders of governments arent there because theyve a deep sense of wanting to represent their people, most of them its because they desire and love attention, praise and power. @@ghuugctujggujvdr We dont, we hold a memorial every year on the anniversary. I am intrigued however at the need you feel to come on here and "remind" Liverpool fans of this. Do you ever go on the message boards of German or Austrian clubs just to remind them what they did during WW2? Perhaps you frequent the message boards of Dallaas FC or to remind them of the Jim Crow laws? Seems a tad redundant to me. Or perhaps you don't feel there's anything wrong with exploiting the deaths of 39 people just to try and further shame an entire fanbase? 99.999999999... % of which had nothing to do with Hysel.

96 is now, unfortunately, 97 as one fan recently died from injuries sustained in the crush almost 30 years after Regarding fans mocking, its vile, but as a Liverpool fan , it also comes from our fanbase too in relation to the Munich disaster (this killed most of Man Us team at the time, plane crash) I think chanting and mocking either disaster is vile. My family are from all over the North West (Liverpool, Manchester, Blackburn, Chester etc) so I have always been less involved in the hatred side of things, but the hatred between Liverpool and Manchester is quite old and actually goes back to a trade dispute , 200 years ago Manchester built a canal to the coast and this diverted some trade from Liverpool which was and still is one of the biggest ports in the UK. The rivalry between the cities is older than football is

I was there that day. When the Memorial Service was first held (first nearly 20 years) only the Kop was open, so only about 10,000 people could attend. Once it was opened up to almost the full capacity of the ground at the time, 40,000 or so places were available. I was able to go to a few of those services. Often, at this kind of event, YNWA is sung with less gusto and more respectfully than it is at a game. The 'Justice for the 96' (96 at the time, 97 since Andrew Devine's untimely passing some years later) chant at the end of the video went on for quite some time beyond what is heard here. JFT97

You should watch the fans of Liverpool FC and Celtic FC (from Glasgow, Scotland) singing together You'll Never Walk Alone. It's the anthem of both Liverpool and Celtic and seeing a stadium full of people singing the same anthem together is truly awe-inspiring. Scottish and English, catholics and protestants, are brothers and sisters for at least a few minutes. And when you know the history of the clubs and the history of the song, it's even more meaningful. That's the big difference between European clubs (football, basketball, rugby, Roller Hockey... whatever) and American franchises. Here it's about the history and about the community. The fans are loyal to the club and the clubs are, or at least used to be, loyal to their fans. Money has changed a lot of that in the last two or three decades, but we're still far from American sports franchises.

Over the years there have also been some other deaths related to Hillsborough. Recently at the Champions League Final in 2022 Liverpool fans were stuck outside the stadium for hours in very confined spaces by the french police. It got quite bad the police used tear gas and the game started about 30 min late. Which is extremely rare for any game especially a champions league final. Two fans who were survivers of the Hillsborough disaster were part of the crowd, the experience in Paris retriggered old bad memories for them and sadly they commited suicide later that year. A different story I heard some years back was that right before Hillsborough a fan last minute coulnd't make it to the game due to a work commitment. So he gave his ticket to his friend to go to the game. His friend ended up being one of the 96 that died. Years later due to his guilt and grief he also commited suicide. His parents believed that the governments & the newspapers stance of blaming Liverpool fans contributed to their son commiting suicide. Feeling that it was your fault that your friend is dead and the newspapers and government saying it's your fault, when it really wasn't is heartbreaking and despicable.

It's a special song. One of my favourite nuances in football is the universal ability to mock Liverpool using the phrase YNWA whenever one of their players is left alone and they lose, whilst simultaneously knowing that mocking them / the club in this way is with no disrespect to those who passed at Hillsborough.

Thanks for reacting to this. I'm a lifelong red, as were my parents and my whole family. Liverpool born and bred, and I couldnt possibly count the hours I and my family have spent in Anfield. This is probably the most muted, restrained rendition of YNWA Ive heard, obviously because of the cicumstances...this wasn't pregame exvitement and celebration. The Hillsborough inquests finally exposed the truth about what happened, and who was at fault...completely exonerating Liverpool fans, and allowing the families of the victims to mourn without the taint of blame. Still, throughout the country at football games, there are disgusting chants of "Always the victims" in relation to Hillsborough, implying that scousers were simply pretending to be the victims and were in fact guilty. It's not just Man Utd fans either. Although they're generally the worst because of the bitter rivaly, there are still those chants in rvery ground around the country. Scousers are also called "bin dippers" by rival fans, implying that Liverpudlians get their food from garbage bins, in relation to the extreme poverty that the City endured in the 80s due to Thatcher's deliberate "managed decline", which bled the City and its people dry, snatching away jobs, education and hope. So, when you see people calling us "bin dippers", ehich is mostly a term used in Manchester, just bear in mind that they're mocking people for being so poor that they were unable to feed themselves. Classy, huh? All of that said, it was the government and The Sun that spread the lies about Liverpool fans, and turned much of the country against the city and people of Liverpool...portraying us as jobless, valueless wastes, and at fault for the tragedy that killed so many of our own. Fortunately, there are also plenty of people around the country with brains who saw through the lies, especially since they were made clear following the inquests, and who celebrate the wonderful, warm, welcoming people of Liverpool. So glad to see our friends across the pond learning about our city and some of the club's history. Welcome to Liverpool!

Man Utd fans sing about the Hillsborough disaster and Liverpool fans sing about the Munich Air Disaster, It's a disgrace on both sides. Football is not more important than human lives. I'm a Liverpool fan and I remember Hillsborough and the aftermath. "Fans" should be ashamed of themselves for singing about the deaths of players and fans

As a Liverpool fan, i think it's wrong how what your fans went through that day is never really mentioned in any of this. I know it can't compare to what the 97 victims went through. But it must have been harrowing to watch that unfurl live. I know 2 Forest fans who were there that day and are still scarred psychologically by it.
