The lead singer, is also thelead and only guitarist. Billy Gibbons. Jimi Hendrix met them while in Texas in 1966 and they were just out of High schoolo, and Hendrix heard them play, and even though they were only 18 years old, he asked them to be his opening Band in his upcoming tour of Europe, and He and Billy Gibbons became fast friends.

Willie Dixon said it best"The blues are the roots and the other musics are the fruits. It's better keeping the roots alive, because it means better fruits from now on. The blues are the roots of all American music. As long as American music survives, so will the blues."

There was music around long before American Blues, such as European folk and classical music, Mozart, Beethoven, etc. The "roots" of American music go much farther back. Virtually every country in the world had music before American blues.
@richardsimpson9039
@richardsimpson9039 8 месяцев назад
@@willieboy3011 He’s wasn’t saying that music didn’t exist before American blues music, because of course it did, music is an elemental part of human culture. Willie Dixon was saying that as far as American music goes, blues is where it all began. Whether that’s true or not is debatable, but in context it makes sense. The music that is quintessentially American is The Blues, Country & Western (not modern country music, rather what was originally called Hillybilly music), and Jazz. Rock & Roll came from the blues and country; jazz is its own thing, although there is jazz influenced rock music.
@willieboy3011
@willieboy3011 8 месяцев назад
But blues is not where it began, obviously. It is only one part of the picture. Blue Grass did not come from Blues, neither did Country, Western (they used to be separate styles), nor arguably Jazz. American music roots come from many countries, like the immigrants who brought this music with them. @@richardsimpson9039

Pre 1980 I was living in SW Louisiana doing radio work. Somewhere along the way someone said, much more eloquent than I, that nirvana is crusing over 80 in a hot rod on a long Texas highway playing ZZ Top. That's what their music was made for. My work vehicle was a Surburban, without a spare inch of space left. No seats, loaded down. I'd remember those words everytime, slouch in the seat and wished I was as cool as I felt right then. I traveled LA 27 a good bit, it and continue the beach side drive (87?) At twighlight 10 out of 10

Polo, I love that moment when your expression involuntarily changes as the groove takes over you. For a few seconds when the song starts, we’re not sure if this is your kind of groove. Then, there’s this moment where one side of your mouth starts to snarl, and your eyes begin to squint. It’s like you just took your first sip of aged Scotch (or Henny :) and we’re watching the flavor profile take you over, and reset your constitution. This is the exact expression we’re all looking for when you play your favorite song for your buddy, we gonna bond over this shared masterpiece. Thank you, Mr Polo, for sharing this buddy-moment with us. Definitely check out “Beer Drinkers & Hellraisers” on the same record. FYI this entire album - “Tres Hombres” - is worth buying, listening to, whatever means you got. It’s fricken Christmas for thine ears my friend.

I was in the Army when a buddy came over with this green album and told me I had to listen to it. Weird name...ZZ Top. Album named "Tres Hombres". My limited ( very limited ) Spanish told me 'Three Dudes'. I was neither impressed with the band's name or the album's title if you wanna know the truth. But by the end of the first track I was hooked...and have been hooked for fifty years now. These three dudes are righteous. They get it. And they can lay it down in a way no one else can remotely duplicate. ZZ Top is on my everyday playlist. While "Tres Hombres" might be their breakout album, my favorite is "Tejas". Just good listening all around. I hope you take the time, Polo, to listen to both albums...before you go down Top's 80's rabbit-hole of highly produced product. I don't mean to say their 80's offerings were bad by any stretch of the imagination, but their bluesy roots kinda took a backdrop when all the glitzy production took place. Kinda lost the spontaneous feeling...if you git my drift.

Saw them at the pit in Albuquerque around 1972 or 73. They are open for BB King, and before ZZ Top, with black Oak, Arkansas. ZZ Top, dear I say, both of the other acts away. You could see how happy B.B. King was. He came on after them and encouraged the crowd to show them some love and give them another encore. B.B. King; class act all the way.

You are spot on, ZZ is pure road house, juke joint music built for good times. Stick to older ZZ, their newer stuff, while commercially successful isn’t the best representation of their talent. Older, bluesy, gritty, dirty ZZ is the best. IMHO Check out- “I’m Nation Wide”, and “Just Got Paid”

Agree. The eliminator album, marked their cross over into a more commercial rock based sound as opposed the the more southern boogie influence early stuff. Though thankfully they never strayed to far from their roots or became a "hair" band🤣 That being said the commercial stuff did get their music into the ears of a lot of people who wouldn't have heard them otherwise...and some of those listeners discovered the old gold in their catalog.

On your comment about lyrics. “Muddy water into wine…” 1. An homage to Muddy Waters and 2. water into wine is one of the biblical miracles: the delta is “muddy water” and the “wine” (the miracle) is the blues-this is a love song by ZZ top to Mississippi as the birthplace to the blues and to the original blues musicians. They are, when they choose to be, much more nuanced and sophisticated in lyrics than they’re given credit for. Glad you’re listening to this. I’m in my 50’s and this is a band I grew up with.

👍 Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher - ZZ Top 4 bucks It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and Billy made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Dusty, Rory, Lou, and Rod. Thank You! Keep Rockin, Gerry!

Commenting before watching because i knew that you'd dig it. Damn good music. Whole lp. Dang man, lived in Memphis from 85-90 and i soaked up the blues eva'day. No one was angry back then. Had a blast..we ALL partied together. I was 24 in RX school. Was already a huge Muddy, Lightnin Hopkins and Wiilie Dixon fan

An absolutely great example of ZZ Top being an amazing Blues band, Some of the stuff they do with blues in subsequent works blends in some Great jazzy bits, and whatever other elements you might be needing and knowing it till the show your ears. Their like that, y'all.

Billy Gibbons told anytime that the bass has to be "dry like a fart" for ZZ Top music. That is one of the fundaments. And the perfect timing between the drums and the bass is great. One of the best bands I've ever heard in my live.

If you want some of their more rocking, less bluesy tracks to check out, I recommend Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, Got Me Under Pressure, and definitely Cheap Sunglasses!
