: 🔗3 Coolest Neighborhoods in Saigon Tour: seeyouinvietnam.com/tour-item/the-coolest-neighborhoods-in-saigon/👇👇👇 We have used See You In Vietnam tours in Saigon and Hoi An and have had excellent experiences on every occasion. If you're in either Saigon or Hoi An, we encourage you to use them. We make no money from recommending them, but they are passionate, knowledgeable guides who have put together truly outstanding tours. They'd love your support, and we'd love this small, local business to succeed! ♥-Judy & Kevin

Just got back after my first trip and I thought your video was a good summary. My takeaways in no particular order (1) the vietnamese coffee has condensed milk. Initially, I stuck with typical espresso but switched and liked it, (2) the variety of places to eat. Street food vs restaurants. I mixed it up to get a sense of what you get, (3) I never worried about my safety in HCMC or Hanoi. As a Australian, I've felt less safe in some parts of the US that I've visited, (4) The people are really nice, (5) No unpleasant experiences and despite the traffic I never saw a single instance of road rage.

Well done! I am from NYC and made my first trip to Vietnam in 1988 with my wife who was born in Saigon but left at the end of the war. I was fascinated and we ended up moving here in 1995 where we remain. Hard to believe now but its been nearly five years since being out of Vietnam initially because of the pandemic but now as I am getting lazy to travel and I don’t want to leave our pets. Anyway your comments are very fair and I would encourage anyone who has adventurous spirit to come. In my case I can now speak Vietnamese normally and I have a lot of fun with people even being now nearly 70 years old and never ever bored. Living here is crazy cheap. The city bus costs less than 25 cents. We bought an apartment near the center of the city 15 years ago in a well ventilated part of the building so no a/c needed. There are no property taxes whatsoever and the monthly electric costs about 20 dollars. The maintenance fee is about 5 dollars a month. Sounds insane but true. And downstairs can be found the usual foods like pho for about 2 dollars a bowl. Unfortunately…Vietnam has no retirement visa but I have a residence card as my wife is a citizen. Ps. One might ask how on earth could we come in 1988 as the country was still effectively closed. We took a chance asking for a visit with the Vietnam ambassador to the UN and surprisingly he agreed to meet us. He said he could not issue any visa in NYC but could help us get one in Thailand. We left for Thailand with nothing but his affirmation to help us. Sure enough we got that visa and were able to buy a ticket on an old Soviet airliner. The adventures began.

@@FindingGinaMarie Thank you for your reply. I have never been in Hoi An but I think the beaches not very far off Hoi An may be interesting . Don't stay too long in Hoi An , that town is over touristic so prices there may be high. Nha Trang and Da Nang (central Vietnam) offer more choices for hanging out and tasting local food .

Thank you so much for your kind words! We hope you have an amazing time in Vietnam. We would like to return and explore more. There is a lot to see in this country! We are strong advocates of figuring out a way to retire early if you can and potentially being open to living outside of the US or traveling full time, which can be much cheaper than living in the US (if you do). The plus side is that we are full-time travelers and can return whenever we want without having to wait for a vacation! We preferred Hanoi to Saigon, but there still is so much of the country for us to see. Thanks for the great video. We loved the coffee culture in Vietnam, even if we did trade our regular hot cappuccinos for coconut coffee. We definitely did not need all the sugar, but an afternoon iced coffee was so refreshing with the heat and high humidity. We love that you gave yourself permission to enjoy burgers. Sometimes you just need a burger or a good pizza. We did get mildly sick here and there, but I'm not sure you can avoid it if you eat at more local places. We have charcoal tablets and plenty of Pepto-Bismol. -Chris
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 6 месяцев назад
We would have liked to have enjoyed even more of it, Chris, but we just didn't squeeze it in. I actually liked the salty milk coffee and the ginger coffee. We're like you and prefer our coffee hot, but the flavored coffee didn't taste quite as good that way. It was hot outside, so the cold drink was enjoyable, but they're easy to gulp versus sip! We really try to enjoy the local food, but there were a few days that were especially hard, and burgers were easy. We're glad for the additional choices we learned after our "3 Coolest Neighborhoods" tour. One of our viewers mentioned about Pepto-Bismol. Not a bad idea. We had probiotics in Egypt, but we thought we'd do okay here without them. But we were very selective about where we ate. Even with that, it's easy to get sick. Sorry you had to deal with that. -Judy

We did the army jeep tour to the countryside to enjoy learning to make rice paper, woven floor mats, coffee grinding (we got to make our own select bag of coffee), and enjoyed the coconut boat tour. (We only allowed them to slowly spin us, but not required at all. So much fun! Our guide was John from Local Buddy Tours.

As far as Central Vietnam, it depends on how long your overall trip will be. If you only have a few days, then Hoi An is a charming, cultural town to visit. It can feel a bit touristy but it is beautiful and an experience. We based ourselves in Da Nang because our duration of stay is longer and it's a bigger city so lots more amenities. Hoi An is a quick 25-30 minutes south of DN so you could just go for a few days. Either way, hope you enjoy!

Although we're planning to based in Hoi An, we're planning to stay three weeks. We'll be doing day trips from there, so we won't be in one place the entire time, but it seemed like it might be nice considering it's supposed to be so beautiful and we do have a lot of work to do alongside our touring. We plan to visit Da Nang and Hue and other places that people may suggest or sites within those cities that are must-see places or experiences. Thanks for watching! -Judy

@FindingGinaMarie Not sure if you already have accommodations in Hoi An, but we stayed near the river, close to the restaurant Morning Glory Signature. We stayed at a place called Win Homestay, address: 24 La Hối, Vietnam....anywhere around there makes it really convenient to explore the ancient town but just far enough so you get a good night's sleep without the music from the bars keeping us up at night. We stayed 5 days around Christmas and it was more than enough time to see the town. Nearby, there's also Marble Mountain, Lady Buddha (Linh Ung Pagoda) and Ba Na Hills to explore.

Regarding your upcoming trip to central Vietnam… highly recommended from my own experiences… rent a car for two days with driver of course from Hồi An or Danang. Make your way to Prao situated west of Danang on the Hồ Chị Minh Highway. Then go north to Khe Sanh. Overnight in Khe Sanh area then go to Hue then back down to Danang. Best to spend a night in Hue as well if you have time so that you can explore more there. This route will bring off the tourist trails and into lands of incredible beauty with the hill tribes.

We did not like our Airbnb in Saigon so we wouldn't recommend them and the location wasn't what we would have preferred, either. We talk about it in our other video from Saigon, which I'll link below. But we were very happy with our accommodations in Hanoi. It was pricey, but centrally located and a bit of a splurge after our experience in Saigon: Golden Sunshine Villa and Travel (www.booking.com/hotel/vn/golden-sunshine-villa-and-travel.html?dksc=2&aid=304142&label=postbooking_confemail). If you could afford it, we totally agree. Before traveling full time, we always would have splurged for a more mainstream/non-discount airline. Loved this video. The sites in the cities reminded me so much of Hangzhou, China. My husband and I would love to visit Vietnam. He was stationed in the Mekong Delta back in ‘69 and he would love to go back. It’s not high on our list … yet, but at some point, definitely want to get there. Did you find Vietnam an easy place to travel through on your own? How about the language barrier, I would assume that English is spoken by more in the south than in the north, but no idea if that’s accurate. Were there any places you felt unsafe (other than when crossing a road leap frog style)? Looked amazing!
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 6 месяцев назад
Thanks so much for watching, Rebecca, and for your comment! Hmmm. Our guide for our "3 Coolest Neighborhoods" was pretty helpful, but I'm not sure you'd need a guide otherwise except for excursions. However, we learned the hard way about our location not being as ideal as it could have been. I'd still say to do a tour like ours very early in your stay to know the right places to eat, etc. We weren't sick at all, thankfully, but it meant that we ate burgers a few times because we weren't sure where to eat (we asked our Airbnb host, but they weren't very helpful). I would say that we managed equally well in the north and south. There are menus in English with pictures, and even at the less touristy places, there often are pictures. Google/Apple Translate were handy for translating some of the menus that weren't in English. We didn't feel stymied because of the language barrier. People are kind and helpful, which goes a long way. We weren't sure which tours were the sorts of things that every tourist does, so we might have missed out on a few of those. People were always around, so there was never a place where we felt unsafe in an empty or quiet alley (there weren't any of those when we were out!). I'd always advise being aware of your surroundings, but I felt extremely safe. Our guides from "3 Coolest Neighborhoods" did help us with the location for our Airbnb in Hoi An and gave us some additional pointers that will be useful, including the offer of making recommendations about places to eat, etc. That emphasizes to us that (1) people in Vietnam can be very kind; (2) having some sort of local giving you some guidance is valuable. We've been fortunate in that some of our guides have become long-term friends, so when we go back to a place or someone has a question for us we aren't sure how to answer, we have someone we can reach out to for advice. -Judy

call it Saigon only sensitive tourists call it HCMC. Locals call it Saigon its thousand year old so its not going anywhere.

Sài gòn is the name of the area now about district 1,3 Sài gòn and Chợ lớn( dist 5,6) to form Đô thành Sài gòn. HCMC is the combination of Đô thành Sài gòn and Gia định province that why in HCMC there are many streets that have the same name. HCMC is more than 10 times bigger to Sài gòn. Saigon was founded in 1698 and it was called Sài gòong until the French came because they can not call exactly the original name

@phunk8607 We mention that Ho Chi Minh City is the formal name and that the name today is used interchangeably otherwise. -Judy

Hi Alan, we really can't complain. We had such a hard time in Saigon in the area where we were. We had some improperly cooked food and it made us extra cautious as a result, especially seeing some of the lack of hygienic conditions. There were so many local places that we just didn't feel comfortable eating at, so we know that we were paying a premium for some food. We have an entire series from Vietnam, including an additional three weeks that we spent in Hoi An as a result of some of the feedback we received to our other Vietnam videos. -Judy 🎥 Vietnam video series: ru-vid.com/group/PLNT98lWfwdF0w1OZR1ZwgqGRPRMKXZaNB

Hi Seng, We did okay. Our Airbnb cost us only $22 per night, which was a very satisfactory price. We paid more than necessary in Hanoi, but we were spending our 40th wedding anniversary there and it was worth the splurge. We may have paid more for some of our food because we weren't keen on some of the health conditions in Saigon and after battling some food poisoning, we were more careful, and sometimes that meant we weren't eating super cheap foods some of the time. We explain a bit more in our first video from Vietnam, which is linked below. -Judy Do not make these mistakes in Ho Chi Minh City: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uee0pMaiMDo.html

It wasn't ideal, but there were some very sketchy places in the part of Saigon where we were. We did a tour on one of our last days in Saigon, and if we had done it earlier, we would have been in much better shape. It wasn't a food tour, but it did expose us to other parts of the city and would have made it easier for us to find safe food. They mentioned that they get a lot of last-minute cancellations because of tourists with food poisoning. It pays to know where to eat and the places to avoid! -Judy

Tip for crossing street in Vietnam: Many tourist foreigners scared of traffic in VN . Don’t worry about it! The rule to win this fear is keep routin slowly walking when you across the streams of motobike! -motobykers knows how to avoid you themself in chaos-order! remmember do not run and stop suddently , accident immidiatly ! Don’t be affraid off and do it if you want to be safety in the crazy- rule traffic in Vietnam. TIP for save your money when enjoy Vietnamese cuisine : Find the shop sever 1 food that many people comes . Street- food instead of smart restaurants !

We responded to your comment on one of our other Vietnam videos, but I'll cross-post it here, too. We agree with this advice for pedestrians. We learned when crossing pretty dangerous streets in Cairo that you need to walk assertively and predictably. It may still be unnerving, but it's much less harrowing than when traffic doesn't know what you're doing. We are all for street food when we feel reasonably certain that the hygiene is good. It's not always the case, especially in some areas where we stayed in Saigon. We got hit a few times with some questionable food, and it sure puts a damper on travel. But you are right that it's much more affordable and not as authentic of an experience. Here are the rest of our episodes from Vietnam. We ended up coming back for another three weeks after the encouragement from viewers like you. -Judy 🎥 Vietnam video series: ru-vid.com/group/PLNT98lWfwdF0w1OZR1ZwgqGRPRMKXZaNB

Hy vọng khoảng 5 năm nữa du lịch VN sẽ đáp ứng mọi yêu cầu của du khách trừ mại dâm và cần sa. Video của bạn rất hay chúc bạn luôn vui khỏe và bình an…???

Thank you so much for your comments. We actually weren't looking for a flashy experience, but for some reason we had trouble making connections. But we want to explore Central Vietnam in the next month so that we can explore more. Our guide from our first video from Vietnam has been exceptionally helpful along with so many of our viewers. We are excited about what we'll find on our trip back to Vietnam. -Judy Here's our first video: Do not make these mistakes in Ho Chi Minh City: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uee0pMaiMDo.html
