I read that Clara Bows family had no idea that Taylor had written this song until after it was done. They were very touched by the song and said if Clara was alive today she would love, support and protect Taylor.

I’ve always felt like she means the industry as well, not her actual hometown

This song is kinda bittersweet, it’s how the industry will build up women then chew them out.

the last line is such a devastating blow & she sings it so sweetly! It sounds like resignation that the cycle will simply continue and be romanticized…there’ll always be a new “it girl” chasing dreams who suffers & dazzles

Most of this album is written with Clara Bow in mind, including Fortnight.

I think the industry. Taylor uses metaphors better than anyone.

You’re on You’re Own Kid is one of my favorites! I love when she does songs about fame and the industry. You nailed it that Taylor uses “town” as a metaphor for the music industry. She does the same in “thanK you aIMee” which you should also react to 😊

I love the last line because she is letting you know that the next hot star that hits the music industry will be compared to Taylor Swift. Her music is written that people can pull different meanings based on what they are feeling.

My favorite part is when she’s saying that some day the “industry” will tell new and upcoming starlet “you look like Taylor Swift, you’ve got edge that she never did” and you said “facts” 😂😂😂 made me laugh

Hometown for Taylor is the industry. She loves her real hometown (Reading PA) and has a couple songs about it...Christmas Tree Farm and The Best Day. You'd like those videos, lots of personal home video like Eminem's Mockingbird - very insightful into her life.

I think "this town's fake but you're the real thing" is definitely the industry, and this is an instance where she's being told that she's so unique and special because she's not fake like other artists are. But this is a vicious cycle that female artists have to deal with all the time: beauty is a fleeting, subjective concept, and one day you can be the most beautiful person on earth and the next everyone's moved on to someone younger and "prettier", for lack of a better term. I love that between Clara Bow, Stevie Nicks, and herself, Taylor spanned a full century to talk about how long this has been happening and how it never stops, because there will always be someone more exciting, more talented, more desirable by society's standards.

I adore Taylor’s tribute songs such as this one with Clara Bow & Stevie Nicks (& Taylor herself), Marjorie, Robin, The Best Day & Ronan. There’s just something magical about them. You’re on your own kid is a personal favourite.

I think the way she writes makes you want to analyse her lyrics over and over again, deep thoughts can be a reflection of her professional life and the music industry, but also applies to our daily lives. In the same way, she writes about herself, but we see our life in these lyrics. I love it and I only knew few songs from the radio for the past 10 years. She is not so popular in the UK unfortunately but hopefully after her UK tour she will be more. I think people underestimate her ..they see pretty girl singing but she is a master of her destiny, she's got it all .. Also the way she performs its a masterpiece

The second half of the album is more "poetic" in a lot of ways. The Lucky One and Nothing New are the younger sisters of Clara Bow and You're on Your Own Kid for me. Taylor has always seen fame and the success from it, as fleeting. I'm off to see Taylor in Edinburgh next month and I am soo excited!

In this track it’s definitely the industry that is fake, but she’s also expressed feeling left out in her home town (midnight rain, the outside, place in this world, you’re on your own kid, etc). It really depends on the song but confirmed by her Amazon exclusive, this is an example of conversations between her/female artists and industry professionals

Great reaction. Most people who love Taylor’s music love YOYOK so looking forward to your reaction of that song. If you noticed in this vid the quotation marks around some words, those are words Taylor heard in real life from music executives so I have read on other posts. I Hate it Here, Peter, Fortnite, So High School and The Alchemy are the ones I listen to on repeat most. Still don’t have a number one 😂.

It’s about the industry being fake. Clara was considered the first “It Girl”. As you will notice a lot of the words are in quotes in this song. These are things that have been told to Taylor and other women artists over the years. She had a conversation with Stevie Nicks telling her that she was compared to Stevie when Taylor first started out. Stevie said she was compared to Clara. The last part is the “new it girl” coming up in the industry that will be compared to Taylor. I’m sure a lot already are being compared to her (Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo)

In one instance she references Tennessee which is known for music and then directly references the lights of Manhattan. The album 1989 is when she "made it out of Tennessee" and no one thought she would escape her - small town - she is also speaking to the industry. Music and movie entertainment.

She really doesn’t need to keep it pg 13, she’s a grown up. This album is definitely not for that demographic anyways. Definitely the industry. On the other hand she also had her detractors in her actual hometown so I don’t doubt that it touches on both, as with thank you Amy, in which I believe she’s talking to someone from her hometown as well as Kim.

I think after what her old team did in regards to her masters, how they treated her when she wanted longer albums, etc when she says her hometown in fake. She moved to Nashville when she was 13ish, her family used all their savings to help her get signed since a young female singer-songwriter wasn't what labels were looking for. Nashville became her hometown, but it isn't her childhood, listen to Seven on folklore to see that

I can't wait for you to hear Yoyok. May I also recommend, for when you do that, Eyes Open, specifically this live performance from 2012: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6zUFT6B9Zr0.html and Should've Said No, this perfomance from 2008: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZqljHLwqjSo.html One of my favorite interviews in terms of Taylor talking about fame is the first one she did with Zane Lowe, in 2015, on the stage of her 1989 world tour. It's no longer avaible online, but if someone sends it to you, do watch it!

This won't be a popular take, but, while the second verse is of course about Stevie Nicks, I kind of feel it might also point a little to Matty Healy. He is (or was) friends with Stevie Nicks, his band is The 1975, she described him as having halfmoon eyes. He is exactly the kind of charismatic frontman female fans swoon over, but I would argue that just like Taylor, he has consistently both played into stereotypes AND tried for an authentic connection. Taylor does it by being relentlessly open in her art, and reaching back more than anyone else in the industry, while Matty does it by deliberately calling attention to the performative aspect of it all. I'm mentioning this for two reasons, one because, even though he fucked everything up spectacularily, if you're interested in Taylor Swift, and this album in particular, to me it seems worth asking not just why it failed, but also what made her think of him as a "twin", during the almost decade they knew each other. The other reason: I LOVE the way Taylor doesn't run away from how all her stories and experiences are those of a girl/woman. But fans often say that exactly because Taylor's songs are so specific to her, they hit you harder, if you've been there, too, or suddenly feel like you get it now. And I just wonder if maybe male listeners should be open to that same effect, rather than assuming it's not for them. So because of that, I really like the idea that male performers might also share in this line of succession, even though that's not the focus of the song.

Actually Taylor makes her music ambiguous. There are metaphors and double meanings purposely. The way people can interpret for themselves. There’s no right or wrong in many cases except for the obvious ones such as The Alchemy.
