Excellent first reaction ... and your "ooh" when Su-metal sang in the breakdown - exactly the right reaction. Even at that age (and younger) her vocals were something special - and she has only got better as she has matured. Good timing too - it is her 24th birthday on Monday. Good spot on the microphone, most don't see that until Su draws the blade. In this video, from June 2013, Su-metal (lead vocalist) was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal (backing vocals, harmonies, dance and in charge of hyping and involving the audiences in live shows) were 13 (I think the video was released on Yui's 14th birthday). They started as a sub-unit of a J-Pop Idol group in 2010 and released 4 or 5 singles while they were still part of that group. 'Megitsune' was the first song they released after separating from the Idol group to become an independent band in their own right. BABYMETAL are Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) lead vocals and dance, Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) scream and dance - that means backing vocals, harmonies and in chartge of hyping the audience with their choreo, leading chants within songs and getting everybody involved and joining in ... you really need to see their live performances. Su sounds even better singing live and their crowd control is unbelievable. In live performances they are also supported by the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians. Sadly Yuimetal left the band in October 2018. She last performed in October 2017 and missed 12 months through ill health finally announcing she was still not fully recovered and had decided that, as she could not perform, she would be following her own long held dreams. Su and Moa chose to continue as a duo. From 2019 through 2021 they were supported by 3 girls (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) dancing - but not singing - in the third spot. 'Megitsune' regularly tops fan polls for favourite song. It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen I think) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks were so prominent in this video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The breakdown with the pig squeals and your favourite part of the song uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. They have about 50 songs now, every one of them is different - virtually every type of metal and then they will also mix in many other genres and musical styles. Some songs are good straight metal others lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. They have won international awards for best live band (and many other things), so you really need to see and hear them playing live to get them at their very best. I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions - I'll just say pick any song, ideally live performances.

Honestly, one of the best first time reactions to BABYMETAL I've ever seen. First of all, no one spots Su's "tanto" (short blade) before she pulls it out. Second, you went through many stages of the usual BABYMETAL discovering process in only one song: first shock by the girls age, the dancing, the music... then amazed by Su's powerful vocals and also by that crazy breakdown (you can repeat it a couple more time, I don't mind, hehe...). Just to end up discovering that they have been out there for 11 years now. Impressive. At this point, pick any other song... down the Fox Hole you go, head first. Just expect the unexpected and enjoy your BABYMETAL journey! Until next time!

Welcome to the bonkers world of BABYMETAL!! This has been going on for a decade and you've got a lot of catching up to do. Cant wait to see you react to a few more, all their songs are pretty different. Su's voice has just gotten better and better with age. Be sure to check them out a live performance next. The real magic with this band is their over-the-top live shows with mad crowd participation.

A very entertaining review! Fantastic catch with the mic/dagger! This video was shot in early 2013 and as you say "they're kids". They started in 2010 as a sub-unit of the Amuse owned Japanese school themed idol group Sakura Gakuin and in this video the lead singer, Su-metal, is 15 and the two dancers and backing singers, Moametal and Yuimetal, are 13. Today they are in their mid 20s so , yes, you could legitimately date Su, if you could deal with her "death stare" and get past the Amuse security. One of the dancers, Yui, left in 2017/2018 for undisclosed medical reasons, which is why you see just Su and Moa in recent pictures. However, Amuse has kept Yui under contract even though she has done no public appearances for 4 years which leads to fan speculation about her future. If you don't want to hear them singing about death then don't listen to "Babymetal DEATH". But actually BM are a very positive band and you should listen to "Headbanger Legend 1997" next as BM are always better live. Megitsune (vixen) is one of BM's female empowerment songs and it subverts many traditional Japanese attitudes to women. We immediately see that this is something to do with Japanese tradition as we have the old instruments, clothing and the setting. At the beginning Yui and Moa pull on Su's obi to release her so she can dance. The dance has wide leg lifts which contrasts with the traditional Japanese dance in the breakdown. In Japan the fox is believed to be a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes in the way they have to be different things in different situations and often are crying inside while they are smiling outside. Su, Moa and Yui mime wearing a mask with their hands and also putting on make up which shows how women have to hide their true faces. The breakdown music is a classic song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossom Cherry Blossom), but Su sings "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). Also Megitsune was written at a time when BM were breaking away from their parent idol group "Sakura Gakuin" and the Fox God is BM's patron deity so it's speculated that singing "kitsune" is expressing their growing independence from Sakura Gakuin. You've also got to include the "super lady" concept of Sakura Gakuin which is hinted at in the lyrics and there's a bit of tension there, as BM the girls are maybe down playing it a bit, but when they have their SG hats on its a lot more straight forwardly trying to be the best that you can. Su's expression of female strength reaches a peak when she shouts "Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" or "Maidens should not be underestimated", and takes the knife from her microphone, so she's saying she's capable of dealing with anyone who gets in her way. Foxes are also associated with Inari, the Japanese god of rice, abundance and now also material success in business. I think linking the "Fox God" to Babymetal is their producer Kobametal having a bit of a joke and what better mascot for a commercial venture.

Hope you do more BABYMETAL. There are a lot of good ones to choose from with my favorite being Ijime, Dame,Zettai from Sonisphere 2014.

This was from 2013 they are the hardest working entertainers in the business backed the world class Kami Band who give their best because they respect the girls commitment and humble nature. Metallica, Slipknot, Judas Priest respect them.

They are so fun and good. Their backing band is some of the best metal musicians around. I had plans to see them live with my teen daughter last year but sadly covid cancelled our plans. It’s such a good alternative to a lot of the regular metal tropes.

The "stages" of watching a BabyMetal video for the first time (and sometimes more) and then the fox god grabs you and you are in that other zone forever. Loved the reaction. Life is so much better with BabyMetal and the Kami band and everyone else involved in their production and lives.

This is the song they have performed the most over the years. And yup they were kids when they did this MV. Babymetal is the Su-metal, lead singer and for good reason. That powerful voice. Next we have Yuimetal who last performed with them in 2017 and officially left the group in 2018. Last but for from least is Moametal. Yui and Moa are listed as scream and dance, but they do more than that. Since Yui left, Moa does even more. They have a backing band that plays with them for their live shows known as the Kamiband. Now you could do one of two things: you can jump around like a flea on a hot brick and wander the foxhole reacting to this and that - which isn't a bad way of experiencing Babymetal - or you could go back to the egg: check out their very first MV (released in 2012!) Su is the inspiration for Koba the producer of BabyMetal he spotted her in an Idol groups farewell performance ( Karen's girls) at around 9/10 years old and everything was built around her voice and stage presence.
