Many folks have commented that their moment of enlightenment with Beefheart came when they saw him live, and how tight and disciplined the band were. It’s a similar thing to The Fall - you imagine it’s loose until you hear it live and realise it’s the opposite, and it’s only achieved with this demented perfectionist front man who knows EXACTLY how it must sound! It’s visionary music. I’ll never forget Bo Diddley hearing The Fall on the 1980s The Tube (with Jools and Paula, time flies) and telling Jools they were IT, he said it was like hearing the early Elvis Presley. These artists are all looking to tap into the root, the origin of all this, and part of the elixir is to be so tight you’re loose!

‘Ain’t no SNAFU. Ain’t no fol-de-rol!’ Only Captain could conjure a line like that with no real substantial words in it and sing it like it was torn from his soul. And yes, you then graduate to The Trout Mask, which is like going from Ulysses to Finnegans Wake.

I never liked Captain Beefheart until dropping acid one night in college. One of my housemates put on 'Clear Spot' and it suddenly made perfect sense. It is music from another dimension. Transcendent. Sacred.

"...no fault of your own...." Sort of a spoof of our commercial society. "Men let your wallets fall out and women open your purses..." Great stuff from another era. "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles" is one of my all-time favorites.

You can't compare this to anything else dude. Because there is nothing else like this to compare it to. Its unique to the Captain and his Magic Band!

Clear Spot is one of my favorite album from that era, but it is definitely 'user friendly" Beefheart. You should check out something from Trout Mask Replica to get an idea of what The Magic Band is really about. haha. But this video is a year old so maybe you have by now. They are in their own genre'.

Folderol (sometimes spelled different ways) is a very old phrase meaning nonsense, hogwash, malarky, etc. Many people couldn't relate to Beefheart's music, especially Trout Mask Replica (TMR). His early music was essentially the rock equivalent of freeform jazz, and most people couldn't grasp freeform jazz. Beefheart was not a trained musician but he and Zappa were good friends and inspired each other. The legend goes that the members of his band were not well trained musicians and had little or not experience when they started the band. Beefheart would give them an idea and guide the members through the songs but told them to simply play what came to them at the moment. TMR was a pure product of its time - creative spontaneity with the right people at the right time.

The meaning is simple. Big Eyed Beans from Venus will glow with you. Man I wish I had some of those.

Even though some people say it's safe Beefheart, it's still awesome. =Clear Spot= and =The Spotlight Kid= are excellent. Sure, it's not the heights scaled by =Lick My Decals Off, Baby=, but they're still awesome. Everybody, everybody will recommend =Trout Mask Replica=, and it's fine (though bloated). But the last three albums are (in my opinion) the best: =Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)=, =Doc at the Radar Station=, and =Ice Cream for Crow=. Cheers.
