Side note, Ethel is a character bc initially preachers daughter started as a film concept and I believe script she created. Also, preachers daughter was not only redone several times, but was done over 4+ years. Also, Ethel was a deacons daughter, but she says she had an amazing family life growing up and even after transitioning. Highly recommend her EPs, inbred is my favorite released work from her. I also recommend check out some of the demos for preachers daughter. Especially hard times and Gibson girl. Hard times demo was actually done by vyva melinkolya, but Hayden changed it days before sending in the album for release. She has said she regrets this a lot.

Fun fact: An Ethel Cain missing poster was released by Hayden a long time ago, aside with PD. It said that Ethel Cain was last seen being abducted into a truck near Texas. That's why the energy between Thoroughfare and Gibson Girl shifts so much. Thoroughfare is a delusion of Ethel, romantizicing her abduction by Isaiah. And how she develops love for the man who eventually kills and eats her. “I never blamed you for loving me the way that you did" - Strangers.

@@RicoandPrimo There is a google doc somewhere in r/EthelCain with a compilation of every but of info there is about Ethel Cain. Il try to get it here. Just for your more info. PD reflects o Ethel downspiral into death. The most important parts of her character and the men in her life. Her "true love" is Willoughby Tucker, sang to in A House in Nebraska. Also, if im not wrong, Logan Tucker, Willoughby's brother, is the guy that Ethel sings to in Western Nights. And finally there is Isaiah, the killer.

@@RicoandPrimothe album was originally written in a more cinematic/visual way, and was reworked over 4 years before being released. Hayden is actually planning on releasing a book with the story of the Ethel Cain universe, also preacher’s daughter is planned to be part of an album trilogy exploring the lives of the women in the preacher’s family (pretty sure they’re supposed to be about Ethel’s mom and grandma), and both the albums and book will delve more into the daughters of Cain cult topic that is teased in one of the songs

Clarification: Ptolemaea isn't when Ethel gets killed and eaten. In Ptolemaea, she "faces the dark side" when under the influence of drugs. August Underground is when Ethel gets locked in an attic and dies there rotting. Televangelism is her spirit ascending, sun bleached flies is her looking back on her life, and strangers is when she gets eaten.
@q.q4027

In ptolomea Ethel is killed. That’s the moment when the act of it happens, but she dies in august underground. The part of ptolomea where she keeps on repeating “stop” and the last one is a scream is when her boyfriend injured her, and while all of it was happening she was high.
@pweasedonteatme
@pweasedonteatme 3 месяца назад
@@q.q4027yeah no ethel cleared this already she dies in august underground as it’s still a drowsy track like ptolomaea. she dies in august underground in the attic that’s why you hear what we can assume is a gunshot and everything goes quiet. ptolemaea is her begging for mercy to isaiah and her “punishment” as the song stands for the punishment for traitors and the 9th circle of hell.
@alemanrodriguezsofia5109

@@pweasedonteatme I just rlly keep wondering why if she doesn’t d1es in ptolomaea Ethel decided to include her death rattle in the end of the song? Like in the acapella version you can clearly hear her being murdered, it just doesn’t makes sense to me u know?
@pweasedonteatme
@pweasedonteatme Месяц назад
@@alemanrodriguezsofia5109 that just her screaming and begging for mercy to isaiah. once again the track/vibe continues to august underground where she is murdered and then you hear a gunshot (what i assume it is remeber tho we are being told the story through ethel which is drugged so she’s not a credible narrator ) at the end and then transition to televangelism. my theory is however that she isn’t in heaven but rather at peace that she’s no longer being tortured that’s why televangelism is so carefree. i think to write such a thoughtful story and just say she died and went to heaven doesn’t really seem like an ethel move to me
@alemanrodriguezsofia5109
@alemanrodriguezsofia5109 Месяц назад
@@pweasedonteatme yes I do strongly believe in ur theory, I mean, having a complicated relationship with religion, church and belief and then suddenly becoming a believer is just not the point she wanted to make, I think it is her realizing and seeing her life not as a tragedy but her letting herself being forgiven and forgiving everyone around her (including the "God" that was never there for her).

My take on the lyrics in Strangers has been that she isn't so much addressing her killer when she says "I just wanted to be yours, can I be yours", but addressing the amalgam of all of the men in her life. There's a thread throughout her arc of wanting to find a pure and good love and every man lets her down in that regard. Whether it be her father's abuse, Willoughby's abandonment, or the violence inflicted on her by Logan and ultimately Isaiah, she was always searching for that acceptance, and I find it all the more heartbreaking that even in death she can't help but question whether it was her fault for not being "good". Loved the reaction vid, Ashley's presence and reactions were such a mood lol. 🖤🖤🖤

So with House in Nebraska, as someone who grew up in a rural area in Alabama (where the character of Ethel is from, shes specifically from shady grove), there's a good amount of abandoned houses. it's not usually entire neighborhoods, but the further you get from suburban sprawl and the cities you see one or two in the areas between the road/highway and the forest,a nd they're usually barely being held together and are COVERED in kudzu. so much so that in the summer, you can only tell there's a house under it due to the squarish blob in the middle of the kudzu. i knew multiple people that would find a way in and use the houses as spots to smoke or hang out, and i assumed that's what was goin on here. that Ethel and Willoughby found of of these houses off the highway and use it as their spot. specifically, i see it as a "as long as we are here, we can pretend we live somewhere different, like Nebraska" and play pretend some kind of domestic life away from all the hurt in that town.

The Sun bleach flies are a metaphor for the women stuck in the cycles of abuse the church perpetuates. Ethel's father did not love her mother, she was another victim of his abuse. Ethel's has referred to her as one of the flies waiting for the day they can escape. She has said her next album is intended to make Ethel's mother the new focus for this exact reason. It's also the reason why the family tree comes into play, the tree has victims of abuse throughout it.

i love that although this album has a set concept and story, anyone can interpret it however they like. like in hard times when she talks about still being tied to her father through the abuse he put her through, a lot of women can relate that to not only their fathers, but love interests too. and in ptolmaea or however u spell it, she’s going though psychosis and talking to god, but a lot of women can also relate that to being abused or victimized. it’s such an amazing piece of art. the best art is something anyone can relate to and interpret in their own way.

Love to see more ppl listening and appreciating her music, she’s such an awesome storyteller and musician. I think Thoroughfare is such an interesting song bc on the outside it seems like just a love story because Ethel as a character is an unreliable narrator. Others see Isaiah as a dangerous and shady guy, Ethel see’s him as nothing but good, she is actually kidnapped by Isaiah but romanticizes her capture because that’s the only way she knows how to deal with all these traumas in her life.

Like another comment said, Ptolomaea is not when she dies. I've like the interpretation of ptolomaea to be that she is hallucinating that she is talking to God! That through her religious trauma, she imagines a God that cursed women because of their "original sin" of betraying man. "Bound to suffering eternal through the sins of their fathers committed long before their conception" How women are only objects, promised to men and that it is what they deserve. That while what men are doing to them is a sin, it was promised to them and they deserve it. "Blessed be you, girl, promised to me by a man who can only feel hatred and contempt towards you" is God telling her that she is blessed for doing what is right by letting men do what they want with her. She is being abused by men who, at their core, hate women. She is essentially filling the role of women in how the church sees them. And also, in Sun bleached Flies, she is alluding to the women that are still trapped in the church, feigning happiness in their money and children. But they are only like the flies that have been sitting in the windowsill, looking toward their own freedom without realizing that they have been trapped inside without a way to get out. When she says "God loves you, but not enough to save you" she is once again bringing in the idea that while God loves women, he still damns them because of their "original sin" and is gifting them and all that they are to men. And of course God did not save her, even though she thought she was doing the right thing.

i’m sure someone else has mentioned this and i’m only at “A House in Nebraska” so you may discuss this later on but: this story is 100% fictional and in no way shape or form depicts Hayden’s actual life story. Her father was a deacon in the church, yes, but only for one elected term to my knowledge. Her mom is pretty good at clarifying on these types of videos, but given that it’s two years later she may not come around anymore to watch haha - Hayden had a tough life with ups and downs, but nothing to this degree at least to my knowledge. This story is just meant to depict what *can* happen to women in America, and is more so a collection of Hayden’s worst fears and the most brutal “what ifs” that she could concoct into a story. (This was stated in an interview she once gave) This album is actually the first part out of three albums that she plans to create surrounding this story. The next album I believe is meant to be from the perspective of Ethel Cain’s mother, and then the last album will be from the perspective of her paternal grandmother. Just wanted to add in my two cents! Now back to the video!

Oof. As much as I liked this reaction... the girl said a few things that were wrong. One of the biggest is about when Ethel is killed. She is killed on august underground. I wish she had let the guys figure it out first... its like a huge point on the album and its heartbreaking and I wish she didn't say he ate her on Ptolomeae bc it wasn't the right time.

It’s quite alright, we were still appalled by the cannibalism. We still appreciate her being there to help dissect the lyrics

Shoutout to the girlie over there FEELING and getting the depth of lyrics and production. Those two bozos sitting there unimpressed lacking comprehensive skills. Stick to rap music. 😭

Hey, Primo here. Ashley has had time to fully marinate in this album as she is a big fan. In contrast, what you watched (if you even did) was our first spin of Preacher's Daughter. We actually very much enjoyed it for the production AND the storytelling.

Rico here. Sounds like you didn’t even listen to a thing we said about the songs. Before being judgmental about us ‘bozos’, how bout you fully analyze the video before leaving a comment. Or you can stick to being a troll

Womp womp to both of u. A mediocre reaction , didn’t pay attention to the bigger things and straight up were silent or stale face. Not every criticisms is a troll. I guess y’all didn’t watch your own video cz?

you should react to Harry's albums he only has 3 so far but his discography is immaculate and you can do them in whatever order, a lot of people know his big hits but he has so many hidden gems that people who aren't familiar with his music don't know about
