First time listening to GUNS N' ROSES - "APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION" (Side 1)

Iconic, this album was a game changer. Mainstream rock music was a stale joke at the time. These guys kicked everyone right in the ass.

I was 15 when this came out the whole album rocked. Growing up in the 80s was the best the music was awesome.

It's such a amazing album. There will never be another Axl Rose.

Definitely Axl singing all the way, and Slash the guitarist is iconic. Izzy their rhythm guitarist should get a lot of credit as well. These are some of the best orchestrated rock songs from a chemistry/rhythm standpoint I’ve heard. Duff pulls it all together on Bass. Incredible talent for one band. This first part is the hard rock portion of “Guns” and second half will be softer with the “Roses” side. The albums were actually not A And B side. They were G and R

I was 14 years old when this came out. In the years before, I had bought the cassettes to my favorite generic hair metal bands of that time: Bon Jovi, Poison, Cinderella, you get the idea. When I bought this cassette and put it on, I was embarrassed for myself and my previous collection of mediocre 80's rock. This changed everything for me, and Appetite For Destruction will always have a special place in my heart.

Back in the days when a cassette with all excellent songs was absolute gold. Not having to skip songs was a luxury rarely found. Thanks for another fantastic reaction.

Everyone was beginning to feel that rock was a dead art form, then this album came out, and everyone was singing welcome to the jungle and I mean everyone it didn’t matter what shade of human being you were. Everyone was digging it.

This album at the time was next level, cutting edge. I was fortunate enough to experience this live first tour ! It was electrifying!

This album came out about 1 month after I graduated high school. We saw Welcome to the Jungle on MTV for a bit before the album came out and then one day at work a guy put the cassette in the group boombox and we listened to it front to back, and I knew it was special from that day. I bought the CD very soon after that. Slash is the lead guitarist who wears an iconic leather top hat, but Izzy Stradlin played rhythm guitar and according to people who knew the band as they were coming up, Izzy was mostly responsible for their overall sound.

I love Ms. Verdy’s. stank face. You just can’t help it. Great music just moves you. That’s one reason I love this channel. Can’t wait for side two!

Good choice of album. I was in the audience when they filmed the video for “Paradise City” at Giants Stadium! I was 19. we didn’t know that they were filming for the video obviously. thought it was just for concert footage. great show. Aerosmith played also.

It's So Easy is Duff's baby. It's got that Punk feel of course. Duff is a Punk Rocker from Seattle. Duff's autobiography is excellent. It is Axl singing.

Slash is a true guitar slinger and Mr. Brownstone is the banger track standout for me. Underrated track - this album was HUGE!

I was in my first year of high school when this album released and it completely blew my mind. I stretched and wore the cassette tape out from the constant playing. A perfect album.

Quick said Note Axl Rose the lead singer is in the Guinness book of World for holding the longest Note in a Song and it's the Ahhh!! one in the first Song Welcome To The Jungle.

Guns N' Roses was basically a supergroup made by the combination of members of 2 Los Angeles bands, L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose.

This album is amazing from start to finish. Axl is doing all the vocals he had 6 octave voice. He was a unique man.

I know this reaction video is a year old, but I just recently discovered your channel. I used to have this album on cassette and listened to it over and over again on my Sony Walkman; so much so that the tape itself deteriorated. Back then, we knew what it really meant to have two sides to an album. This album was so good that it was literally the reason I started listening to Rock at all (I was, and still am, primarily a Country Music fan). I must say, you have impeccable ears. You pointed out so many musical elements that most people simply don't hear, or are incapable of identifying properly. As a former musician myself, I find it so irritating when others react to music/artists and try to pretend like they know what they're talking about. They'll use terms like harmony, melody, rhythm, key change, drawl, twang, chord, tune, falsetto, etc. in an effort to try and sound like experts; but they do so improperly. That kind of thing is a real problem for people who actually know even basic Music Theory. Congrats on being able to truly hear what's going on! Also, it's just a treat seeing somebody just now discovering something that I loved experiencing as a child. My mother didn't even care about the foul language in the uncensored version of the tape. Sometimes I would even listen to this album on her very large stereo; which was a three part component system with speakers taller than I was, a record player at the top, an 8-track player, and a two-deck cassette player that allowed you to record from one tape to another at high speed. (Very high-tech at the time). And of course, I'll never forget watching the band's music videos on MTV.

I gotta say, it's nice to see the appreciation for Slash's guitar work. He has always been one of the best. In a world filled with "pentatonic box" wankers, or soulless shredders, Slash always played the tastiest licks. Perfectly crafted licks everytime. I think you really might enjoy the album KISS Alive. The guitars are great, Ace is one of the best imo. Simple straight ahead rock, and being a live album, only their best songs.

This is IN YOUR FACE debut album...it was also the soundtrack of the last movie of de saga Dirty Harry with Clint Eastwood (Harry Callahan) in 1988...In a interview Axl Rose said that Clint called them to congratulate them on the album. He told them it was a hell of a album and that he heard it on the plane. The guitarrist...well it's a legend Slash (Saul Hudson)...he is in the league of Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, etc etc...In this days it fits "better call Saul"...ja...greetings from Chile.

Some info on Guns N' Roses debut album 'Appetite for Destruction' (1987)... The band: W. Axl Rose (vocals), Slash (lead guitar), Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar/ backing vocals), Duff McKagan (bass/ backing vocals) and Steven Adler (drums). The album is one of the highest-selling rock records of all time - 18 million copies sold in the US, 30+ million worldwide. This was the only GNR album released w/ this line-up (along w/ the 1988 EP 'GNR Lies') ... Drummer Steve Adler was fired in 1990 and replaced by Matt Sorum... Dizzy Reed (keyboards/ piano) was added to the band by 1991. Guns N' Roses were formed around 1985 in Los Angeles... the line-up solidified in 1986, as they band played local clubs, but were a handful... volatile and dangerous, no record label wanted to sign them. They lived in drug dens and w/ strippers, had no jobs or income unless they played shows. Most of their songs were written in this time period. GNR were finally signed in 1986 to Geffen Records and producer Mike Clink was picked to record the album... The handful of songs chosen for the record was considered the best of what they had written. The remainder of songs would be recorded for the 1991 "Use your illusion" albums in 2 parts... Another controversy was when a painting of a robotic rape by Robert Williams was chosen for the album cover of 'Appetite for destruction'... (There is a larger robot attacking the rapist... in its defense) Geffen rejected the cover and opted to have the band logo w/ the members' heads as skulls instead... the original cover was released as a limited edition. The music industry hated the album and expectations were very low... the label Geffen were also worried that GNR would break up before they could promote the album. 'Appetite for destruction' was released in the fall of 1987 and the band went on tour opening for Motley Crue. The band filmed a music video for 'Welcome to the jungle'... and when MTV aired it in late '87, their switchboard was flooded w/ calls requesting the video. "Sweet Child O' Mine" was the next single in 1988 and it became a huge single (#1 in the US, #6 in the UK in 1989) ... GNR opened a massive tour for Aerosmith in 1988... The next single 'Paradise city' went to #5 in the US, #6 in the UK. In 1988, 'Appetite for destruction' reached #1 on the US charts and would go on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide, making Guns N' Roses the biggest rock band in the world by 1989. In 1988, Guns N' Roses recorded 4 songs acoustically for the EP 'GNR Lies' (which had 8 tracks) showing a different side of the band... The ballad 'Patience' became another huge hit.

The guitar player is Slash, not only he's an amazing guitar player, he also oozes charisma. If you watch a live performance from the late 80s or early 90s, you'll find it hard to take your eyes of him.

When I first listened to It's So Easy many years back, that was my initial reaction that there was someone else singing. Just goes to show how amazing and versatile of a singer Axl is.

It's cool to see the impact this album is having on you. I would have thought that all this time later it might be a little dated. The swearing on this album was shocking to me at the time. The band felt truly dangerous. I had never heard anything like it, being quite young at the time. Nice to see it still hitting the mark.

No, that is 100% Axl the entire album. His normal singing voice is fairly low, so you heard it in It's So Easy... he's just pushing his voice really hard in the higher parts and after 2 years of touring following the debut of this album his voice gave out and he needed surgery on his vocal chords, and he's never again been able to sing the high notes like he does on this album.

i listen "welcome to the jungle" for the first time at the age of 8 in a lasertag game....it was stunning. only one week earlier i had listen back in black and discover the ac/dc (in my house music was forbidden... lost of time, you have to work. stop)... mind blowing. i want to listen more and more, i want to start play electric guitar, i want to have a rock band, and starting to listend cassette and LP at the music shop and at house of my friend.... my life change and even now, 25years after this moment, i play guitar, i love gnr, hair metal, Sleaze metal, hard rock and so on. love this music and this feeling

I saw them May 1988 open for Maiden in Vancouver Canada. 6 weeks later they were #1. Absolutely a Mindboggling Concert that night so intense that at one point Bruce Dickinson came n stage and challenged Axl to a Fist fight! 3500 of us left that Concert asking out loud What The Fuk just happened? We all were there for Iron Maiden but all Left ChantingGuns and Roses!nGuns and Roses as we stumbled up the streets of Vancouver.

Rock music was at a dead spot when this came out. You'd have to be around in 87/88 to fully appreciate its impact. Someone brought the cassette for my friends and I to listen to while we were skateboarding in the neighborhood. We were all looking at each shaking our heads, with our mouths open. We couldn't believe it. We were all thinking the same thing..... this album is incredible.

Bought this album in 1989 when i was 16, oops gave my age away. My first ever album i bought and what an album it blew me away! My fave band of all time, one of the best bands ever to exist. one of the best frontmen of a band, with one of the unique and recognisable voices ever, Slash one of the greatest guitarist ever, one of the best selling debut albums ever. This album start to finish an adrenaline rush, no fillers every song could of been a single! Does it show it’s my fave band? 😁

Axle sings all the songs, he has incredible range. Slash is the lead guitarist playing those iconic riffs. You should def check out use your illusions 1 and 2. A lot more cursing in those though lol

You should check out Aerosmith Rocks. That's Slash's favorite album and you can hear it's influence all over this.

When this album came out GnR blew everybody away. Slash was different from any guitar player at that time, while everybody was trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen, Slash sounded more like Jimmy page on steroids..first time I heard Outta Get Me my face melted, I knew in that moment that I needed to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it.

GnR are great, seen them live several times since the early 90s, including their (relatively) recent reunion tour, always 3 hours plus of just blowing the roof off, excellent live show. Two other bands/albums from around this same time that are also fantastic from beginning to end and definitely worth checking out: Dirt - Alice In Chains Nothing Shocking - Janes Addiction

I believe this is still the top selling debut album of all time... Also, Guns n Roses was one of the top selling tours of the past 5 years. Do a search on RU-vid for guns N roses at the ritz 88. They perform almost the entire album at its height. Changed my life when I was 12

I love the subtext in the WTTJ video. Axl starts in hair metal mode and by the end of the video they kind of squash that genre. I saw it as hugely symbolic. Yeah I'm talking to you, Poison!

I was one of those metal kids in high school and bought Faster Pussycat, GNR and LA Guns albums at the moment of release! I even had the demos from tape trading and we heard "November Rain" that way! GNR was unpopular for a good year - as far as mainstream went until they released "Sweet Child o Mine" and the song blew up on radio, They were adored by metal heads though. But they were unliked for a good year by many. I never expected though they would get to the level they did. Good Times! Still love them!

Paradise city is definitely about San Diego California… I saw them there LIVE not too long ago- the tour was called “not in this lifetime” Stadium they played in, got torn down and rebuilt to another

haha That stankface during "Welcome to the Jungle" is so fun to watch. I can't remember the last time I saw someone hear that song for the first time, it's played so often at sports arenas here in the US. Izzy Stradlin, the rhythm guitarist, is really underrated. So much of their sound comes from the way he compliments Slash.

The guitar player is SLASH. You’d prob recognize him if you see his pic. He has a distinct look and is one of the most iconic guitarist in music history.

this was the first band I heard and knew "this is different. this isn't my parents' music-- this is my favorite band.' It isn't my top favorite but it's still up there top 5.

Steven used a lot of cowbell in his drumming. He had a unique style for sure. They really never sounded the same after he was fired.
