I've got your reactions figured out! Randomly note an instrument (the keys! the guitar! the bass!) and a technique (the harmonies! the reverb!), then add meaningless bullshit commentary using big words (the musicality! the composition!). Rinse. Repeat! You could automate this shit and save everyone a lot of time.
Formulaic. Such As these comments, I figured it out! Individuals find such an issue with my content yet continue to view it. Lol quite ambivalent and contradictious my friend. Well if my automated videos and meaningless verbose as you describe bothers you as such then I'm quite sure you can find other channels that accommodate your desires. But I get it, man, you're used to channels being devoid of any substance that you conflate my genuine reactions with the utter nonsense you conform to. DO yourself a favor if you don't enjoy it, it's a simple concept. DON'T WATCH. Good day. These comments man you could automate this shit and spare others the time.
Really a douche bag remark. The guy is coming from a more technical perspective. And, this kind of response is natural and honest conpared with the over the top clowning people do in their "reaction" videos. Maybe if he used simpler words it would be easier for you to follow. But, there's already enough dumbed down content out there.
I hope this voids out the "voidmstr"s" comment Jay. This afternoon one of your reaction videos came up on my recommendations.....hit it and found myself binging (& subscribing) on so many others of yours. I think your reactions musically and lyrically are great. Keep doing what you're doing! Thank you from a 67 year old granny who probably knows a lot more about music than that void guy.
Backup singer is Merry Clayton, who the Stones called in the middle of the night to record. She came to the studio in curlers and very pregnant. She also sang for Skynyrd and lots of other groups.
Her life story is quite sad & tragic, losing her baby in a miscarriage right after recording this album or losing her legs in a car accident in 2014. Hope she is well still, loved all of her vocal work. She is an incredible singer in her own right.
There is a video out there, with isolated vocals for Gimme Shelter. When Merry Clayton's vocal comes back in the middle, you can hear her voice cracking, and guys in the background saying whoa. I never noticed it, until listening to the isolated vocal tracks. Pretty cool they left the reactions to her voice cracking, in the final mix.
Listen closely in the middle when Merry Clayton sings the part, "Rape, Murder, It's just a shot away". On the third time through singing that, her voice crackles on the word Murder. If you listen close enough, you can hear Mick Jagger react to that by saying, "Whoo!" in the background. Clearly he was very impressed with her voice and the effort she put into singing.
They got Mary out of bed at 3a.m. she was in curlers and night clothes to do this..She was also pregnant and miscarried shortly thereafter .The documentary 20 Feet from Stardom has the isolated vocals and she does commentary She also toured extensively with the Stones after this
Great review. I'm glad you're dipping into the Stones. When this came out at the end of the '60s there seemed to be violence everywhere.. Assassinations, riots, protests that became violent, etc. Really all over the world and even at the Stones infamous free concert at Altamont Speedway, where a man was shot right in front of the stage while the Stones were playing.
Indeed. There is no doubt that many of the most popular groups from the '60s and '70s were very influenced by American Blues. It is worth looking into the many great Blues musicians who preceded that era. wdcb.org/program/blues-before-sunrise
As some others may have said, while recording this song the band realised something was missing and needed a female voice. It was 2 am and they tried a few other singers and either found no answer or they weren't interested at that time. Merry Clayton was 8 months pregnant but agreed to come in. She gave the vocal performance of a life time in one take and went back home to bed. Unfortunately she woke up at 6am in pain, rushed to the hospital only to find her unborn baby was dead.
Nice reaction! Song is all about the feels of the time. In addition to the war, civil right riots etc that were raging, the cold war had been a constant threat for decades, and the nuclear proliferation that came along with it. Kids were routinely drilled at school for potential bombings. I think this track captures the edginess of the time pretty well and is kind of a time capsule in that sense. Merry Clayton did endure quite a lot of tragedy, but is still active...singing on multiple cuts on a recent Coldplay release and also dropped a solo album earlier this year.
Blues guitarist weighing in here with 42 years of experience and a long comment. Hear me out. Forget 'Sympathy for the Devil' - probably the most overrated Stones song of all time. The lyrics are engaging, but musically, it's a boring 3-chord song that goes on for over six minutes, giving it a false 'epic' quality. I say this as a 30+ year Stones fan who has played 'Sympathy' on guitar in front of humans a number of times. It's boring AF, as you kids say. Even the guitar solo on the standard LP version, which sounds cool, is boring to play (the live version from 1969 at MSG is, of course, Mick Taylor's best guitar solo, and one of the most famous guitar solos of all time). *The definitive Rolling Stones song of all time is, in my not at all humble opinion, Brown Sugar.* It's everything The Stones are all about in one convenient song. It moves around musically in a much more interesting way without ever leaving the blues. And the lyrics are something else entirely. I don't think an all-white band could get away with those lyrics today. I'd be really interested in your take on that tune. Thanks and great job. Truly enjoyable watching a younger generation appreciate older music.
Merry cracking her voice always, always gives me shivers! Btw, that guy above made an idiotic comment. I find your knowledge of music makes the reactions really good! So carry on!
Great reaction! I was lucky to have an uncle that was feeding me with Stones music back in the early 90's, fan since that moment. Curious what you think about their song: mother's little helper.
This song is from the late 60’s the era of civil rights and anti war demonstrations which were massive not to mention the war itself .There was also a huge cultural divide at the time between the people and the establishment( sound familiar ?) I think it was a warning to all the sides that shit could go sideways at any moment ...sort of appropriate today as well.
1969-Not only was the Vietnam War at it's peak, but civil unrest in the streets was growing quite violent with student demonstrations and civil rights violence. Plus you had the very recent assassinations' of MLK and Robert Kennedy. A very violent time and yet still there was the peace movement
You are listening to a drummer named Charlie Watts. Hes a jazz drummer. He does something very unique. He doesn't set the tempo. He plays along with Keith Richards who is always setting the tempo and keeping the time . In the live performances it will sometime sound like the drumming is off, but it's not. He keeps time with Keith Richards, and usually it's the other way around Where the band follows the drummers lead. Check out their song bitch. It's greasey slimy guitar riff . You're gonna love it
One of the great anti-war songs of all time, but it’s about more than just war. In 1968-‘69 the world seemed on the brink of destruction, not just from Viet Nam but also from racial strife, assasinations, the youth revolt and counterculture, etc. Nobody captured the darkness and turmoil better than The Stones, with this song and others like Street Fighting Man, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, etc. Gimme Shelter seems to imply that we’re caught in the grip of evil forces beyond our control, but then the last verse brings it home by showing how easy it is to choose the path of love, and how that choice is totally ours to make.
Your appreciation of The Stones will grow the more you hear. A must listen, even though it’s a bit of a cliche because it’s been so overplayed, is Sympathy For The Devil. 🔥🎸
This is "probably" The Stones greatest track but there's stiff competition. Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Brown Sugar, Sympathy For The Devil, Miss You... My personal fave is a deep cut called: Fingerprint File. Very obscure, very funky.
They wrote this song after 69 altmont incident it’s not a war song the stones are so brilliant they took a bad situation and turned it into a legendary song
This song is specifically about the fall of Saigon, Vietnam. So many children died from the U.S.’s indiscriminate carpet bombing. I’m sure you’ve seen some of the heat breaking pictures.
Rolling Stones is a real thing! Thanks for reacting! I tried to see if you’ve reacted to this a cappella band called Home Free. They are something else! Try Man Of Constant Sorrow for a starter.
The lyrics make me think of the kids who were massacred at the high school in Miami. “ War......children......it’s just a shot away”. And Vietnam. The incredible singer saying , “ Rape! Murder!” is the amazing Merry Clayton.
Jay,please play songs by the Stones off their sticky fingers album, like bitch, and moonlight mile.probably the greatest album ever and. depicts the feel of the 60’s and early 70’s the most
Not just a war song. Think back to 1969 and civil unrest as well. Rape Murder, War, red carpet in our very streets.... It's just overall violence. Could be about today.
Only one Female could ever do that part. You’ve been told her name already yes This Song was Anti-Vietnam War This Song is “History & Present” Defined an Era
1969, Vietnam war, threat of nuclear inhalation, assasination's and war at home with nixons army, civil rights, uncertainty of tomorrow...a very crazy time in history.
Can I ask something? Why don't you drop shit over a few hours? You just BLOAW!! Here's everything i did today. Move it around man. Great reaction as always. Just been on my mind.
Originally there wasn't a female singer, the producer said it needed a female voice. The guitar, IIRC, is Keith in open G that was his signature tuning gives it that spooky vibe. Echoplex delay again IIRC.
I've always taken the theme as more of a warning that war could be coming to our very streets...civil unrest, protests, riots, etc not unlike 2020-2021.
Check out the documentary “ Twenty feet from Stardom.” Merry Clayton and all the backup singers who helped make these great songs lives are featured and unfortunately not really given the credit that they deserve.
"see the fire is sweepin' Our streets today Burns like a red coal carpet Mad bull lost its way " They're talking about napalm . This was specifically directed towards Vietnam and was a slag against America for what it was doing but can be applied to all war . Pure genius .
Yeah the harmonies are great I guess what the Russians are invading the Ukraine and there’s a war going on this took place back in Vietnam Vietnam war this isn’t just a song this isn’t just about harmonies and bass and how good the singer sings and I’ve got the background singer sings this is about a frickin’ war
The Stones were much more into a rhythm in their songs and were never into the over hype of getting to deep in the 60s psychedelic era with only one album devoted to that and not over doing it with boring philosophical messages. . One song that no one ever much reacts to is Fingerprint File which is a classic 70s funky tune that could use some attention.
