Yes, not many people know this song in America because it was quite popular in Germany in the 1980s. I was an exchange student and middle Germany in 1986 and my host mother loved loved Jennifer Rush. It’s all she really played all day long. She had some quite catchy hits but she could never really open doors here in America and was doing quite well in the European market.

Like you, I “missed” Jennifer in her prime-in fact, I only discovered her 2 months ago. I am a big fan of Celine and only discovered Jennifer because I came across Celine’s cover of POL including Jennifer. I couldn’t believe my ears. I’m 84 and have heard them all, from Ginger Rogers to Edith Piaf to Vera Lynn. Then Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Tammy Wynette, and Bonnie Tyler. Add Gloria Gaynor, Connie Francis, Lauren Branagh, Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, Celine, Mariah, and Whitney and you have the lineup of the greats right up to Adele and Susan Boyle. But, Jennifer Rush has the all-around best female voice I have ever heard. Her operatic training adds an unmatched vibrato containing depth and texture. And she sings everything: opera, pop, rock, and ballads in English, Spanish, German, and Hungarian. She has written or co-written the lyrics and music for many of her songs, done duets with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, Elton John, and Brian May-sorry-Sir Brian May-and performed live all over the world-but not in America, except in March and April 1986 on the Carson show and the Dick Clark Show; that’s it. Yes. If Jennifer had decided to live her life in the US, she would still be in Las Vegas or on tour. Growing up in the 80's i've always loved this song. Had it on vinyl. Years later i took a risk and bought Celine's The Colour Of My Love album purely because of Think Twice. Was surprised first track was this song. Loved it. You can love both versions. They are slightly different. You're right Jennifer sings "about the TPOL" and Celine sings "of the". I always wondered whether it was just easier for Celine to sing that. Don't know. Hope you react to more Jennifer - she has quite a few albums!
jennifer's father was a german opera singer. jennifer was raised in NYC. she is on the classical opera side like her father. she didn't hit it big in america she did have a home in hollywood but left. finally hit it big in europe and britain in 1984. she eventually settled in germany, speaking fluent german and singing in german. jennifer was also a hit in spain. don't know why not a hit in usa.

her voice is unique. real unique. If we look at other great artists like Celine Dion her voice is similar to Lara Fabian.. Bonnie Tyler no much difference to Robin Beck. Whitney Huston we find many times girls at Pop Idols or THE VOICE who are having a similar sound color .. not the same octave range.. I am pointing out to the color of the voice. the timbre. Brian Adams, Rod Steward and Sting are a bit similar. Jennifer Rush is absolutely unique.. No other Diva had or has got a voice like hers

The New York scenery is because she is from New York … This song was a major hit all over Europe when it was released in the 80’s . Celina Dion did a good job but Jennifer Rush’s as the song writer is far more touching . 💚🤍💛 ❤️

no no, in continental Europe it's better known than Celine's version. It's her song, she co-wrote it and it was a huge number 1 all over Europe and the world besides the US... just the US was ignoring it and to wait until Celine picked it up. She had several successfull albums in Germany where she was based in the 80's.

My most favourite singer of all time! I always get lost in this song. The album version comes in at 6 minutes with a full second verse and a knockout ending. The video is ridiculous, I don't know why they did that (to appeal to the US market, perhaps?)
This was one of the truly great power ballads of the '80's back here in the UK and all over Europe. It's just a shame we had to put up with the dumbo movie scenes which accompanied it.
She not only recorded it first. She also wrote it. Nobody comes close. There’s a video of her and Celine singing this bouncing back and forth between the two and at the end together where Celine manages to stay with her note for note. This is still the best though

I think Jennifer also wrote this. My mum recently passed away, this was her favourite song. She found the covers insulting by comparison (the production, not vocals) . I like all of them, but get emotional whenever I hear this version. I think this is the best version in every way.. I don't understand why it failed in the States. Branigan's most successful songs were European hits that she gave "a North American sound to". Off topic - I assumed Dereck was no older than 25, just saw somewhere that he's late 30s!! in Latin America this is the most famous version, it is a classic for all of us, CELINE'S version came later it became a hit but not as big as the RUSH version. the AIR SUPPLY and the BRANIGAN renditions were not known at all here in places like ARGENTINA.
She wrote it. This was massive in London and even in the clubs which is unusual for a ballad. In saying that I’m meaning the West End gay clubs lol so she was beloved by LGBT.

Now they released a new official RING OF ICE REMIX by Jennifer Rush and Stereoact. it went nr one on german iTunes download charts, did great on apple music, also in Austria and Switzerland , and well in south africa. The non german speaking countries missed actualy out. Will be great if you can do a reation.
