True story. He's singing to his mom. His dad worked really hard to support him and his brother and time with his dad was happy, "riding around listening to tunes".

The song is beautifully sad, the story is so true for people that are trying to escape the pain of their dreams being crushed by the world; but some do get to make it out; but sometimes it means leaving that person with the addiction behind 😢😢😢

Noland Taylor is an artist I just stumbled a crossed and man is he a genius. I can't wait to hear more from him; if you can have an artist speak to you when you can't even relate to their message, but you can still feel the gravity of what they're speaking about, you know they are a POWERFUL one!

Loved the reaction. Britt I implore you to listen to Jason Isbell specifically Elephant. Or If We Were Vampires. He's the best song writer this generation has. Last Of My Kind is another fantastic song. But Elephant is a song that will make you feel as well.

Well reviewed, Britt. This is a masterfully crafted song from an emerging artist, and it's awesome to see it connect with the wider world. You did indeed pick up on the more uncommon switch that it was the mom who was causing such trauma to the family. It's sung softly and very subtly at the start, but the lyric about driving down 68, was that it actually was him who had to do it to get them home safe because his mother was strung out and sleeping at the wheel. So there he was, in the 7th grade, chain smoking as it was the only thing his mom ever taught him, and taking on the responsibility to get everyone home ok. Tragic and unfortunately not rare. One note on the setting of the video since it caught your eye - that's a brilliant piece of production from @radiowv (Radio West Virginia). They've fortunately brought their content to RU-vid, and it's top stuff. It's their signature look to put these young, hungry, and immensely talented singer/songwriters from around the country out in the beautiful hills of West Virginia with a quality microphone and have them go at it. Highly recommend anyone out there who liked this song to search their channel and discover a treasure trove of similar artists with powerful songs that are only hindered by lack of mainstream airplay. Truly enjoy your channel too. You're having the success you definitely deserve!

When he says "I hope dad left money for us" ....No kid should ever wonder if dad makes money for them..fuck
@cody2493
@cody2493 11 месяцев назад
True. My interpretation of that line was that his dad was probably a long-haul trucker and even if he left money, his mom spent it all on drugs. Either way, that's a difficult childhood to survive.

I saw another reactor do a video of this performance which led me to their site. What started out as a Nolan Taylor rabbit hole quickly turned into many other artists. The one that shook me the most was Jake Kohn. His original song called "Frostbite" just blew my mind. The voice that came out of this very young man was absolutely crazy and unexpected. The word Prodigy comes to mind - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2z74dVGrCEA.html

Nolan is one of the kindest guy I’ve ever met. The song is about his mom, they grew up on the rural outskirts of Cincinnati. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him 2x now and he always makes time to talk to everyone who goes to see him live, and when you speak to him it’s like you’ve known the guy forever.

In the first verse, "I drove just to get us home safe" His mom was falling asleep at the wheel, so he, apparently still in the 7th grade, drove just to get them home safe.

It must be the Appalachia in me, but I’ve seen several reactions and I’m not sure how there is the confusion. Riding around with Dad is a happy place. Hoping Dad left money isn’t a slight on Dad, it’s a kid hoping there was money so he could buy something. A couple of lines that are really heavy. Mom was falling asleep driving down 68, I drive just to get us home safe. How scary and unfair for a kid to have to drive to get himself, his family home safe because the adult is unable to drive. Second the oven was heating the house if our electric was on. Being from WV, this is a reality for way too many families. Referencing using the cooking oven as a heat source if the electric was on. Great song, great voice, great talent. This song needs to be heard.

His mom isn't abusive Manipulative narcissistic drug Addict his father isnt around. Or like split custody would be a better way to say it. That's why he said they would drive around. Listen to tunes like that's the only time he would have peace. Is when they do get to be with there dad ....she's abused Him and took from him his whole Is life

@cody2493 11 месяцев назад
What does this song have to do with Tracy Chapman "Fast Car"? You lost me there. At first I took your comment to be opposite reality and very cringy, but I now think you meant "white privelege" as a sarcastic comment because this song is the polar opposite of privilege. You are correct though, it has nothing to do with skin color, and also nothing to do with money.
