Hi Britt. Dolly not only wrote this , the guy she wrote it to and for was standing just a few feet from her during this performance. When Dolly was getting her start she was hired by Porter Wagoner to be the girl singer on his TV show. She said she would stay for a couple years and then go off to begin her solo career. They had big hits together doing duets and the popularity of the show grew larger after she joined it. Several years later she told him she was leaving as she had said and he did not take it well. He said some very unkind things to and about Dolly. She wrote this as a goodbye and performed it for him. Years later Porter fell on hard financial times and had to sell his book of music and songs. Dolly bought them so he would get a good and fair price and then gifted it all back to him. He apologized and they became friends again. Years after that when Porter was ill and dying, Dolly went to the hospital often and sang for him and his family. She is the sweetest woman and has done so much for so many.
