I believe that instrument is called a "Hurdy-Gurdy". A medieval instrument, barely used anymore. It's got a strange name in English, while in German it's called a "Drehleier", which roughly translates to rotary lyre.

More Hurdy-Gurdy! 🤘🔥🌶️ That's an Irish Bouzouki, the same as Nightwish's Troy Donockley plays - it has four pairs of strings instead of the traditional three. Two bands allied to Eluveitie you need to be aware of - Cellar Darling was formed when Anna Murphy (Hurdy-Gurdy) Ivo (Guitar) and Merlin (drums) were fired. And Fabienne Erni (female vocalist) and Jonas Wolf (guitar) have recently released their first album from their side-project, Illumishade. Illumishade - Rise (Official Video) Illumishade - Crystal Silence (Lyric Video) Illumishade - World's End (Official Video)

Since Anna Murphy left the band I haven't really kept up with Eluveitie but this singer is really good, I'll have to listen more. You should listen to them with Anna Murphy, she also had a great voice and she played the Hurdy Gurdy as well. Also she's done some solo stuff and worked with other bands. The sound of all the different instruments is very unique and awesome. Its fun to watch them.

I for one am very glad you enjoyed this one. Looks like others long beat me by many hours to ID the instruments. If you want to hear the hurdy-gurdy more isolated in a song (not reaction-worthy, though), check out "The Longing" by Patty Gurdy (a cover of a song by Storm Seeker...the band she plays the hurdy-gurdy in, in fact - she also does educational videos about the instrument). Eluveitie has had some major lineup changes over the years. A few years ago their clean vocalist/hurdy-gurdy player and a few others broke off to form "Cellar Darling" (another neat band you might like), while Eluveitie continued with new guitarists and etc. It's a little bit older, but if you want to hear the fiddle player really rock it, give their song "King" a listen...or "Call of the Mountains" - a song so popular that it got recorded in at least 4 different languages. Again, glad that you enjoyed listening to them!

Oh my YES CHASE! You're finally digging into Eluveitie! I'd recommend you do King next - or if you want to stay on the same album, Deathwalker. So, to add on to the hurdy gurdy part - the musician you're seeing in this video is Michalina Malisz - she's the new hurdy gurdy player for the band since 2017, and she does a lot of "playthroughs" on RU-vid - go check them out! As for Anna Murphy, ex-vocalist and hurdy gurdy player, she left with the ex-guitarist Ivo Henzi when the ex-drummer, Merlin Stutter, was expelled from the group (I don't remember why, though), and those three went on to create the group Cellar Darling. I was so happy and surprised to see you react to Eluveitie! Yes, they have a TON of instruments. The one you keep talking about is called a Hurdy Gurdy. They have a few songs that isolate its sound. I think you will love falling down this rabbit hole. It's every.bit as enjoyable as Nightwish, but in different ways. Anything off of their Helvetios album is awesome. They even bring back a near dead language and translate the pronunciation as close as possible and work those words into their songs. Im gonna recommend A Rose For Epona next.

Saw them a couple years ago, I'm such a sucker for folk & all things mythology, they're one of my fav bands and I'm always glad when more people discover good music :) Also: yes, there are a lot of instruments in this song, but you still need to add bagpipes to the mix! Another interesting info is that they use traditional Celtic music melodies and they refer mainly to Celtic mythology, in fact some of the songs have lyrics in a reconstructed form of Gaulish, an ancient Celtic language. As for the next song from them, I personally am in love with Epona - I don't know why but i can feel it deep in my soul, I'd never get tired of listening to that!

The instrument is a hurdy gurdy, it is almost like a cross between bagpipes and a violin in as much as it produces a droning sound by rubbing a wheel against the strings and notes are played using keys. If you like this kind of thing there is a reasonably sized scene of German bands that do this kind of thing. Some to check out would be Tanzwut (the more metal side project of Corvus Corax), Salatio Mortis and Feuerschwanz who have just put out a new album. There is less screaming and growling in these bands but I have definitely heard some bands that utilise these vocal styles.

I'm Swiss, and played for a year and a half in an Eluveitie cover band. We actually found the best way to get a handle on all the different instruments, was to watch live shows because the mixing is never as good as their recorded music and different instruments will come through more strongly. It doesn't help that three members keep switching instruments! They do often have synth keys and pre-recorded choirs in the background. Their song Ategnatos even has didgeridoo in the intro. Right now Eluveitie are 9 members: Harsh vocals/tin whistle/bouzouki - Chrigel (Christian Glanzmann), founder and songwriter Clean vocals/harp - Fabienne Erni Guitars - Jonas Wolf and Rafael Salzmann Bass - Kay Brem Tin whistle/low whistle/bagpipes/bouzouki/bodhran - Matteo Sisti (bouzouki is like an irish/greek mandola, bodhran is that one-handed drum from the intro and acoustic break) Hurdy-gurdy - Michalina Malisz Fiddle - Nicole Ansperger Drums - Alain Ackermann I'm biased, being a massive fan of Eluveitie, but I'd love to see your analyses of more of their songs: King is awesome, Inis Mona is their best known, Call of the Mountains is also amazing and features their former female vocalist/hurdygurdy player Anna Murphy, and finally The Siege is also amazing and features Anna Murphy screaming along with Chrigel.

You should check out "King" by Eluvietie next. That was the first song of theirs that I ever heard and it pulled me right in. It's from an earlier album with a slightly different band lineup. The female vocalist back then also played the mystery instrument you couldn't place lol. Speaking of which, as some have said, that instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy and it dates back to the middle ages. It is played by turning a crank handle, which spins a wheel across a series of strings, while the other hand is used to play keys that adjust the notes. Best way to describe the sound is a cross between bagpipes and a violin.

Eluveitie is extremely versatile. Some of their songs are pretty black metallish and some is pure folk music without metal. Rebirth has both elements in it. And every now and then they have more symphonic elements as well. If you are interested on more of them A Rose for Epona is their classic (with their previous female lead Anna Murphy, now in a band called Cellar Darling), Call of the Mountains (also with Anna) is a catchy and "easy" song, Ambiramus has a folk party vibe and Worship is dark and symphonic. And their cover of Powerwolf's song When the Saints Are Going Wild (their version called Ira Sancti and sung in Gaulish) is also great.

Yep, it's pretty much our biggest musical export... They're also really nice people, completely down to earth. I got to work with them at a local charity show (yes, the same band that plays main stage shows at big festivals such as Wacken or Summer Breeze actually cancelled a show in order to play a local charity gig with an audience of 300 people)

This face of pure joy, discovering Eluveitie for the very first time! 👌 You seem to be very interested in the hurdy-gurdy! I wanted to played it once, but I finally preferred the harp. Make sure to also try songs with the previous singer Anna Murphy. Here is a little list of proposals : Alesia, Inis Mona, Helvetios, A Rose for Epona, Bloodstained Ground, Gaulish War... 💕

Thanks you for checking out this awesome band!!! As others have said, that's a hurdy gurdy & a striing instrument with keys from the middle ages isn't exactly normal in a metal band, but then again, neither are several other of their instruments LOL! As for other songs, I'd suggest the title track from the album Ategnatos, Breathe, The Slumber, The Call of the Mountains, and the lyric video for A Rose For Epona ;-) Thanks again & have an awesome day!

AS others pointed out, the instrument is called "Hurdy-Gurdy" ("Drehleier" in german). It is a very versatile instrument as it has several different sets of strings. Some of them can even get "switched on/off" on the fly. It is very common in folk or medieval styled bands (at least here in germany). If you want to hear it more isolated, you might want to have a look at Patty Gurdy here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pyIXR3s8OtY.html

Hmmm, not my favorite song or Era for Eluveitie (though I still enjoy it), but they are a pandora's box for sure between the folk instruments, heavy and melodeath metal influences, etc. I actually like the new singer's stuff, i just don't like it when she does the songs from the previous singer's stint. Anna Murphy, the singer before her just had a very unique voice (not eccentrically classically good, but like say, Stevie Nicks or Tom Petty, it's just so distinctive and infectious) I'd be curious what you'd think of "A Rose for Epona" (with the old singer, not to be confused with "Epona", a good song with the new singer) or "Inis Mona" (mostly male and death vox). Also they have some truly amazing acoustic stuff, like "Omnos". Ah Chase, you are truly finding the rabbit holes now, mate! Enjoy the journey!

This was my first listen to Eluveitie as well. Loved it, and love your insights. First saw you for Ghost Love Score and subscribed after watching Poet and the Pendulum (my first ever subscription). You’ve caught nuances that I’ve missed in hundreds of listens, and made some of those old songs new for me. Now you’re expanding my horizons as well. Well done and thank you. Looking forward to the continued journey.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Folk metal, where the rhythms are brutal and the instruments unidentifiable. Another recommendation Inis Mona. If you get the chance have a listen Eluveitie's old hurdy gurdy player in her new band Cellar Darling. Everyone will throw out Avalanche but I am a particular fan of Hullaballoo mostly because I never thought I'd see someone do what looks like a guitar style whammy on a hurdy gurdy. Other folk metal recommendations: Korpiklaani (My fave: Rauta), Turisas (Battle Metal for basic but I LOVE sahti waari) Ensiferum (My fave is Dragonheads) Tyr (Sinklars Visa which has a four part harmony which is INSANE live)

ok A) that is a Hurdy Gurdy as others have stated, B) NO they don't normally sound like that its just that Michalina Malisz is an ABSOLUTE BEAST (she has vids of her playing solo on youtube you can check out)
@fnargler

Hurdy gurdy's are capable of such a variety of sounds that it can be tough to isolate, especially in a busy mix like this. Their Hurdy Gurgdy play, Michalina Malisz has her own youtube channel where she does playthroughs of their songs and others though, so if you want to hear it more clearly, you can. Also as a cool anecdote, she started off as just a fan of the band that posted covers but when their original hurdy gurdy player left the band, she got the job.

Short explanation of the hurdy gurdy: Theres a central wheel (driven by the crank she is turning) that essentially is a circular "bow" like what a violinist would use. It engages a variety of strings, kind of like the different pipes on a bagpipe, so it harmonizes with itself in a way (think one-man-band). Theres the drones, constant, theres a set of keyed strings which she plays the lead on, and I think something else too, above that. Very cool instrument for sure, historic to the german-speaking countries primarily I think, as pointed out in other comments. There is a neat explanation of it by patty gurdy here on youtube, an up and coming gurdyist (or whatever the term may be).

That instrument is the Hurdy Gurdy. They had a lineup change a couple of years ago in which their drummer, a guitarist and the hurdy gurdy player/ singer Anna Murphy, all parted ways and started their own band called Cellar Darling. They replaced the drummer and guitarist but they had to get two people to replace Anna Murphy. They had to get a hurdy gurdy player and a singer because they apparently couldn't find someone who did both. 😁

I've seen Eluveitie last year together with Lacuna Coil and infected rain for the first time. They're one of the few Bands that sound live as good if not better than in the studio. All of them master their instruments, their songs are so unique and they suck you in with their stage presence. The call of the mountain may be their most known song, but I would highly recommend to listen to inis mona, epona, helvetios or king.

Great reaction Chase. The folk sound is very Celtic. The Hurdy Gurdy is a friction string instrument like a violin except that it has a wheel that rubs on the strings. Check out the Patty Gurdy channel for lots of awesome Hurdy Gurdy music.

YES! Think I recommended this one on the first video I ever saw from you so great to see them on here! Always fun to watch a good reactor experiencing the intensity from "Rebrith" for the first time. Saw Eluveitie in December of last year and it was one of the most intense live experiences I've attended to date! So another awesome song by them to check out would be "King". Keep in mind that they've gone through SEVERAL changes in band members so many of the musicians won't be the same in that video. The only original member left is the band's creator - male vocalist Chrigel Glanzmann.

Case in point of the reason why I like a mix of melodic vocals and growls - there's just so many interesting things you can do with the contrast musically. It was kind of interesting to actually hear 'backup growls' where the growl vocals were being done behind the melodic vocals, but they were done very softly... I don't see that very often, usually they're either as loud or louder than the melodic vocals - I have to give kudos for whoever mixed the vocals for setting that up right.
