His laid-back style is reminiscent of Billie Holiday's style, which Cale says inspired him. The joint album The Road to Escondido with Clapton was deservedly awarded a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2008.✌👍

For a 68 year old like me it's half difficult and half funny to hear someone not know Eric Clapton's work given how long he's been a rocker and how many bands, besides his own, that he's been in and the number of famous songs he's recorded and more. But the massive age difference thing would explain it. Clapton has toured for over 50 years, covering 58 countries across six continents. He has played for over two billion people in more than 3,000 concerts so far. His extensive touring experience includes over 200 performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall and more than 50 concerts at Madison Square Garden. Clapton’s albums and songs have received a total of 80 gold, platinum, multi-platinum, and diamond sales awards by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Eric Clapton has been awarded 17 Grammys since 1972, including an honorary lifetime achievement award in 2006. He has won these awards for his solo work and also shared them for collaborations with other artists such as B.B. King, Carlos Santana, Bob Dylan, Ravi Shankar, etc. Eric Clapton has Played in 9 Bands. Clapton has released 27 studio albums. After the launch of his professional career with The Yardbirds in 1963, he played with nine bands which are listed below. The Roosters Casey Jones and The Engineers The Yardbirds John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers Cream Delaney & Bonnie & Friends Blind Faith Derek & The Dominos Legends

Eric Clapton has been all over the place in his life. He was a serious heroine and alcoholic who didn’t leave his house for three years. He got off the heroin - and then starting drinking heavily. Somewhere in there he added the coke. In 1986, he became clean and sober. His motivation, the birth of his son. Then almost 5 years later, his son, Connor accidentally ran out a floor to ceiling window that was left open after cleaning (his was playing hide and seek). He fell 20+ floors, I believe. Somehow, he remained 4:09 clean and sober. He wrote the song about his son, Conner - the one you mentioned earlier. Eric Clapton has built a rehab facility in Antiga and raised money through concerts and auctioning off many of his guitars to donate to those less fortunate who can’t afford rehab. If you listen to the lyrics clearly he says “Dirty Cocaine”. There is also a lyric about “you can’t get it back.” Reverencing, the time you spend high will never come back. You’ll never know what you could have accomplished or what great joy you could have experienced during this time…”but you can’t get it back.” He sings it now as an anti-drug anthem.

Hey Brit, quick history, in the 60's Eric was the premier guitarist in England, his fans called him "Slo' hand" and there were signs "Clapton is god". Chas Chandler, bassist for the Animals found a young guitarist named Jimi Hendrix, became his manager on the one exception that Chas can get him to sit in with Eric. Jimi came to England, Chas and Jimi found Eric playing and Chas asked if Jimi could sit in, Eric agreed. Jimi plugged in and blew the roof off, Eric left the stage, Chas went backstage to find out what was wrong. After asking Eric said, "you didn't tell me how good he was", after that Jimi was the toast of the town, with all the greats coming to pay homage, Page, Beck, Townsend, the Beatles, etc... The rest is history!!! Check out: Jimi Hendrix "Johnny B. Goode" Live from Hendrix in the West, Jimi Hendrix "Hey Joe" Monterey Pop Live, Jimi Hendrix "Like a rolling stone" Monterey Pop live, "Star Spangled Banner" from Woodstock and his Masterpiece "Machine Gun". After that any studio versions of, "Red House", "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and many others. Then pass it on to other young people, the man was truly a Legend!!!

He's called "slow hand," because it takes him so long to tune his guitar. He takes his time.
@warrenbridges1891
@warrenbridges1891 Год назад
@@thomashiggins9320 Actually it started in the Yardbirds. When he snapped a string, the fans would slow hand clap him while he was restringing his instrument. This story was originally told by Yardbirds bass player Chris Dreja.
@gregcable3250
@gregcable3250 Год назад
@@thomashiggins9320 Actually, that is not quite right. When he was playing in the clubs in London in the 60s and would break a string (because of his aggressive playing with Bluesbreakers), he would need to re-string, then of course tune, because they had no extra guitars or roadies, then. So the audience would clap while waiting. And it took time. Kevin--it has nothing whatsoever to do with how he plays, slow or fast, which he does both, as appropriate for the song.
@senseandsensibility3636

Eric Clapton has a huge catalog, he was a founding member of the Yardbirds that eventually morphed into Led Zeppelin, left their because they were getting to mainstream to join Cream a supergroup with two other big time musicians, he was friends with Jimi Hendrix, he was the 6th Beatle their last album he did a lot of the guitar work on it, tried to steal George Harrison's (Beatles guitarist) wife, re-did Bob Marley's song Who Shot The Sheriff, formed a band with Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers and had maybe his biggest hit with them in Layla (a song about George Harrison;s wife) that band was called Derrick and the Dominoes, he then became huge friends with Stevie Ray Vaughn and was touring with him when Vaughn died. In between a lot of this were drug addiction hard times ect, then in the 90's I think he did the first MTV Unplugged where he sang Tears In Heaven about his sons death. He may have lived the most rock and roll life ever....

Clapton is a true icon of Rock, Blues and has his own style. He is known as "Slow Hand" for his guitar playing. Back in the day, the Beatles - well John Lennon said something like my gosh we're bigger than Jesus as to their popularity. And Clapton fans responded by saying Clapton is God! But in fact they cross collaborated. Here is Clapton playing lead and singing in a tribute to George Harrison (one of the Beatles who we lost in early 2,000's): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CrTMc2i6Lzc.html (While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Taken from Concert For George)) It's a song George wrote and had Eric Clapton play a guitar part. Notice this concert has 2 Beatles (Paul and Ringo), along with a whole host of other stars playing. And incredibly George Harrison's son Dhani plays acoustic guitar front and center (the guy with the heart shaped sound hole in his guitar) and is the spitting image of George. And here is a taste of Clapton and the Blues: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sJK78Y3zoQk.html (B.B. King ft. Eric Clapton | Riding With The King ( official video and lyrics)) Clapton had an annual blues/guitar festival called "crossroads" for many years with all sorts of musical stars as guests. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DqeT7QCmhjY.html ("Crossroads" - Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Doyle Bramhall II, Robert Rundolph (Live 2008))

This song was originally done by JJ Cale. Clapton did his cover of the song. You have to remember when this song came out in the 70's cocaine was the drug of the upper middle class and rich. And the 60's and 70's an era of sex, drugs, and rock n roll.

Hands down, Eric Clapton is one of the premiere guitarists of all time. They don't call him Slow Hand for nothing. You would love his original version of Layla when he was with Derrick and the Dominoes. It would be interesting for you to compare the original Layla with the acoustic version from MTV Unplugged. Completely different songs, with the same words. Clapton was also the lead guitar on The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Fun fact, in the past, don't know about now, you could always tell how Clapton felt about his performance. When he set his guitar down, if the strings were facing you, he thought he did well. If they were away from you, he was apologizing.

In 1965 a graffiti sign in London, that spurred into tagging at shows stating "Clapton Is God" were common after his stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers after he left the Yardbirds. Some argue he was best in the band Cream, or with Derek and the Dominoes, or with Delaney and Bonnie. (all groups he was in from 1965-1972) Layla is his signature tune (electric from the 70s or the "Unplugged " show in 1993). Eric is saddled right next to Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck as most influential players for guitarists. His music, like most of his peers at the time was intentionally eclectic. Going from blues, to rock and jazz to country. Clapton does it all. LAYLA, WONDERFUL TONIGHT, BELL BOTTOM BLUES, WHITE ROOM, WALKING BLUES, and OLD LOVE are some of his highlights.

I'm a bit late coming to this party, but Clapton is my idol. This song when written took on a bit of a different meaning. However, since that time in the 70s, Clapton has set up the Cross Roads rehabilitation centre for addiction. I think the song when thought about in the perspective of addiction and the negative connotations with drugs, it takes on a different meaning. Brit, I'd you read this, react to more Clapton, but listen to some of his blues work. He's played with some of the greats like BB King and Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc... He's put out decades of epic music.

Wow, what do say about Clapton... He's a legend, Guitar God, Supergroup megaman and a 3 time RnR Hall of Famer, not to mention his career spans 6 decades and his music crosses multiple genres. JJ Cale wrote this song, Clapton covered it, and it's really anti drug. Clapton covered Cales "After Midnight" too, another great one...dive deeper please...

When you're saying you wouldn't have pegged him as... something, a word you were looking for. I suppose you were thinking he was more like one of those old school crooners from the 50s? Would not blame you for that impression =D But nah Clapton has encompassed everything from old blues, traditional rock, pop rock, psychadelic rock, slower stuff.... I'm 31 from the UK and everyone of my generation, the generation below me, and a few generations above me have grown up with Clapton as a household name like Bowie, the Stones, Queen, Beatles, Queen etc. He's close to the top of pretty much every publication's top guitarists in history lists. You might like Layla, probably his best known song!

Clapton can play it all, rock, blues he even covered a Marley song. The song I would suggest you have to listen to it twice. It's about a woman who was the love of his life (at the time) she was married to George Harrison and he called her Layla. In his single version it's a ballad and you might think the lyrics sweet. In the version by Derek and the Dominoes (of which he was a member) Duane Alleman is playing the guitar, it's up tempo and you actually can feel the emotion he had for that woman.

Eric was a naughty boy. Started out with one of the earliest and most famous rock bands in history, Cream. He was also in the Yardbirds, Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith as well as his solo work. He was called 'God' of the guitar. His blues creds are off the charts and has played with all the blues greats. He kidded his good friend Phil Collins as to why he never wrote a song for him to play in so Phil wrote 'I Wish It Would Rain Down on Me', his only blues number (though 'Roof Is Leaking' is pretty bluesy). Their video is crazy, funny fun. It would be a great one to review.

This was a JJ Cale song. It is one where, the vibe is more than the lyrics. Like other commenters said, His life is a musical journey . Every band he played with after Cream had its own style..from southern boogie to reggae. Always returning to his first one, the Blues. Should hear some of his work with BB King. Also you should listen to his first recording of Cross Roads to hear where his Guitar playing legend was based. 2nd solo left me with chills down my spine! Still does!
