The tall one at the back on the record cover is Art Garfunkel who sings most of this song. The smaller one with the dark hair is Paul Simon who wrote their songs and sings at the very end of this song. This song is a masterpiece and no cover could hold a candle to their original version.
Art Garfunkel's voice is intimate. Like falling leaves in the autumn. If you watched him sing this live from Central Park his hands are in his pockets. Just like he is having a conversation with a friend on the street corner.
Paul Simon one of the greatest songsmiths and musician ever. So many magical songs and as a duo with Garfunkels immaculate vocals staggering!!!❤ Their voices work so well together. I recommend Sound of Silence, The Boxer, America and my personal favorite Old Friends/Bookends ❤❤❤❤
Aretha Franklin covered the song famously too, but for me Simon & Garfunkel's original remains the best version. Their Bridge Over Troubled Water album is packed full of great songs. "The Boxer" is the other big hit from it. Paul Simon sings that one. Check it out when you can.
Paul Simon responded positively to Elvis Presley's performance of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." In fact, he was quite impressed with Elvis's rendition of the song. After Elvis recorded the song, Paul Simon reportedly sent Elvis a letter expressing his admiration for his interpretation of the song. Simon felt that Elvis brought a unique and powerful quality to the song with his rendition.
Now you know why so many others covered this beautiful song. Paul Simon was one of the greatest songwriters ever! Art Garfunkel’s tenor brings such warm meaning to this gem!
Welcome to the Simon and Garfunkel rabbit whole. It's huge, "The Boxer", "Sound of Silence", " Mrs. Robinson" are only three. There are lots more, but I worked last night and it's after 1:00pm now. My brain is mush.
@@cynthiagonzalez658 well Cynthia just because you know who they are don't mean everyone does too. Cynthia you know where Cabo Verde is? We don't know everything plus I'm not from USA so these artist are new to me just saying
@@CVTECK1 Sure I know. And I grew up in the other side of the world from the USA and we all knew them. I'm just shocked. It's like not ever knowing about the law of gravity, or never having heard of The Beatles or the Stones or... Say what? You don't know them?
This S&G version was my favourite until I heard Elvis sing this song live in Las Vegas. My, oh my! The emotion and voice excellence of Elvis is unmatched. This man's voice was touched by God. Elvis #1 for sure 🇿🇦
Garfunkel for me. His voice is ethereal. It brings you to heaven. Elvis is an earthy voice. If that's your type great. Art G. For me. Forever. Peerless. Who's Farnam?
Paul Simon is one of the greatest American songeriters. If you like story telling you dhould listen to America, the Boxer, Celia, I am a Rock---I could go on. Simon's lyrics are sometimes thoughtful, heartbreaking, sometimes playful and fulll of joy and wonder.
It is GarfunKle. With a “K” he was saying it either a “G.” It is all good though because I love his reactions to everything and watching this generation discover classics like this.
I feel that when a person listens to an extraordinary, classic song, it should be the original to ger the full effect of what made it soi special in the first place.
You are in for a great experience as you dig deep into Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon is one of the greatest singer songwriters of all time you will be amazed. Both his work as the group S&G and his solo work. His music will truly take you places. Try the Boxer, Cecilia, The Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, I am a rock, it truly is endless. Soon I will suggest Paul Simon solo works. Love your passion and reactions!
LISTNEN TO THE BOXER, ALL THEIR STUFF IS AMAZING. KINGS OF FOLK ROCK. PAUL SIMON WROTE MOST OF THEIR MUSIC, ART GARFUNKEL (THE TALK ONE) SANG MOST OF THIIS ONE. AT 72 I THANK GOD I GREW UP IN THE 60'S. EASILY THE GREATEST MUSIC FOLLOWED BY THE 70'S.
Paul Simon, the short man, was the writer here, the song swept the Grammy's in 1971, Please check this duo out, in this time period they were overshadowed by the Beatles but the material they pot out is unequalled as far as a duo, I look forward to watching your reactions to them. Thanks.
Practically everything Simon and Garfunkel did as a duo is worth listening to. The Boxer, Sound of Silence, and El Condor Pasa are really worth looking into first. Generally the albums have the cleanest sound, but the versions from their free concert in Central Park (which 500,000 fans attended) are also good. Their other smaller live performances have more of a folk vibe, with just Simon on guitar. If you pronounce the Funk in the middle of Garfunkel’s name like the musical genre, it is easy to pronounce. But put the vocal emphasis on the Gar at the start Paul Simon was one of the best songwriters of his era, and Art Garfunkel’s voice was amazing (he damaged it by smoking). Garfunkel could sing better while relaxed than most could while doing their best.
This is the best version of this song. They wrote it. The disturbed version, well it's disturbing. To dark and violent to the lyrics. This is a song of love and compassion for your fellow man. I think of it as a promise from Jesus to have faith in him to carry you through life. Thanks for sharing.
Definitely, check out "The Boxer" and "The Sound of Silence" from the studio albums. Also, "Cecilia", "El Condor Pasa", "Me and Julio in the School Yard", "Homeward Bound", "I Am a Rock", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" and "Bleecker Street" for starters.
For any S&G song no one can do their songs Justice like their original. Paul Simon is the shorter man in front. A true poet, he wrote all their songs. Art Garfunkel, with the voice of an Angel is the taller of the two. Next try “ Sound of Silence “, “The Boxer “ “ I am a Rock “ to start with.
Try S&G: The Dangling Conversation America Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme The Boxer I Am A Rock Old Friends A Simple Desultory Phillipic Patterns Cloudy For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her Kathy's Song Mrs. Robinson El Condor Pasa Save The Life of My Child There are tons more. I envy you having just discovered them. I grew up when they were still recording, and I own all their albums, most on LP. Check out their solo albums after they split up, especially Paul Simon's "Graceland" and Art Garfunkel's "Angel Claire".
You need to check out their live performance of this song at the Central Park Concert. Actually it's only Art Garfunkel singing accompanied by a piano. Paul Simon of course wrote the song. Prolific songwriter as a member of Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist.
Simon and Garfunkel were the biggest thing in the late 1960s. Paul Simon wrote this song and many other masterpieces. Art Garfunkel is the taller of the two and he has a soaring tenor voice that compliments Simon's baritone to a tee. Listen to America, Homeward Bound, and The Boxer to get a feel of what these two incredible musicians can do. By the way, you have listened to a lot of music, but there are some major performers and writers you are missing. Check out Bob Dylan's The Times They are A-changing, Hurricane, and Like a Rolling Stone to find out why Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Eagles were the biggest group in the late 1970s and you probably have heard Hotel California, but it's worth another listen. They also wrote their own music and have some really memorable songs like Desperado, Take It to The Limit, Take It Easy. Their 5 part harmonies were simply delightful to listen to. And if you want to peek inside a time capsule and see where rock and roll came from, check out Chuck Berry doing Johnny B Goode. He is the one who turned the electric guitar from a rhythm instrument into the prominent position it occupies today.
Yes Simon and Garfunkel are The originals for the bridge over song , they have so many great hits , however I still think there's a lot of warmth and passion and John Farnham's rendition of this song . He. Knows how to tell the story of a song and deliver perfectly with passion..❤
I prefer Elvis singing this to see him singing it live is just awesome he puts more passion and emotion into his version never heard of John Fareham will check it out 😊
This one I heard my whole life and have loved it! Garfunkels voice is that of an angel and hits your soul but when I watched Elvis's version it took me to God I felt him in every word and I felt like Elvis voice was blanketing me and putting his arms around me like a big brother so that one is my favorite version. Simon and Garfunkel are very much worth listening to they are an amazing duo! Songs like Homeward Bound, the Boxer I am an Island and so many more!
I would say every song they did was a great song but I would start out with Sounds of Silence, Mrs. Robinson and Hazy Shade of Winter. Then I would do a couple of fantastic cover songs. The Bangles do a killer version of Hazy Shade of Winter and a band called Disturbed does the same thing with Sounds of Silence. Also, Aretha Franklin does a killer version of Bridge Over Troubled Water also.
This is not even the best song on the album. THE BOXER is maybe the best song they did together. Paul Simon wrote every song they performed together, and had a stellar solo career spanning almost 20 years. Their first song, Sounds of Silence, is stunning poetry set to music. PARSELY, SAGE, ROSEMARY, and THYME is a medieval ballad woven together with an anti-war song. The discography is vast and terrific.

Elvis cover is better. The music gets too loud in this one and you have to take note that it what you are hearing here is it takes 2 people to do the song. Elvis sang it by himself and you can clearly hear his voice, he is able to use different octaves and goes to his higher and deep register with all the emotion and the piano is better in his. I think you should listen to Elvis again, he wasn't loud with it, his is more inviting.
Garfunkel could have done the whole song, but he insisted Simon write a third verse and sing it. And this was in the middle of them breaking up - Simon wrote the song as a gift to Garfunkel, and Garfunkel brought Simon into it.
@@aaronbredon2948 What i said has nothing to do with Garfunkel could have sang it by himself bc it still would not be as great as Elvis's cover. What I said also has nothing to do with the fact that a third verse was added or that it was done during them breaking up. The fact I was making is that Elvis sang it better and with more passion as he did all his songs. Any cover he did, always was his after that. His was one voice, the greatest voice of all time.
You said it takes two people to do the song. That is simply wrong - watch the Concert in Central park. Garfunkel sings the entire song alone (with his hands in his back pockets). And whether Elvis did it better is a matter of opinion. Elvis needed an entire philharmonic orchestra to do the song justice. Art Garfunkel managed with a keyboard and guitar (or even with just a guitar in some live performances). (Yes, I know Elvis could have performed with less backup, but in the one performance I found with less support, he didn’t do very well at this song - it could have just been a bad night for him, but Garfunkel never performed that poorly) The thing about Garfunkel is he could hold the key from barely audible up to full volume, and he takes advantage of that in this song. You might have noticed how the volume slowly increases during the verse while he was still singing. Elvis only increased volume during breaks in his singing. And Garfunkel could hold a single note, while Elvis adjusted tone around the note to try to bring out more emotion. Elvis was indeed a great singer of his type of singing, but Garfunkel was also a great singer. They were different types of singers.
You are also definite on whose version you like best and that is your opinion. You talk like I said I couldn't stand them, I like them also, I just like Elvis's version best of all. Tho Elvis is my favorite singer, I do enjoy a whole lot of other artist and songs. That would be obvious since he passed away in 1977, after which many songs have been sung that he could not cover.
