Neil Diamond was one of the finest songwriters of the 60s/70s. He began his career at the famous Brill Building in NYC alongside other famous writers of the day, like Carole King, Paul Simon, etc. Neil is Jewish (and in fact, turns 83 today!), but still caught the essence of the traveling revival tent preachers of the era. He came across a scene like this when he was in college one day. You definitely should check out more of his songs. He is truly a superb writer. And those words you were puzzling over (Hot August Night) actually became the title of a hugely-successful live album of his released in 1972 that reached double platinum status.

I know a great lady in her 80s who grew up in a small Texas town where her family was one of only 2 or 3 Jewish families in the community. When she was about 7, there was a tent revival in town and she wandered in, drawn by the great music, thinking somebody was just having a party! Wrapped up in the event, she ended up in the line of folks coming forward to be baptized! Fortunately, the kind townspeople recognized her and realized her parents would not be happy about her being baptized and "saved her from being saved"! She had a great time anyway! Before anybody says "why weren't her parents watching her?"....remember it was a small town in the 1940s...kids went wherever they wanted on their own And as demonstrated by this story, the whole town looked out for their well-being.😊

As a 7 year old girl, it was right that her parents were considered in this matter. On the other hand, as a Jewish man, the apostle Paul's desire was that his people would be saved. Ro 10:1 ¶ Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

This song is about a traveling revival show, that were common place across this country the late 1800's and early 1900's. Neil Diamond is from NY and gained prominence first as a song writer, the likes of which many of his songs in the early mid-60's charted very high for other artists. It was in the mid-60's that he began his recording career as an artist with hits 'Solitary Man', "Cherry, Cherry' and 'Kentucky Woman'. This song here came out in '69 and was also the name of the album that it was on.

I'm an atheist and I have always loved this song, from when it first came out to the present. I've heard that it is based on a real experience of his. Don't know if that is true or not. It's one great gospel revival song. Mr. Diamond was born into a Jewish faith family but that doesn't matter. This and pretty much every one of his songs are great.

You were definitely right about the revival meeting. Good job! Neil wrote the song after attending such a meeting. Now do yourself and us a favour and review Holly Holy, one of his best! You could use the 1971 BBC TV Special version, which is mesmerising: a singer and his guitar (there's an orchestra behind the curtain) and that fantastic voice of his. Or you could use the 1972 Hot August Night live version. The intensity is just incredible.

Thanks, Britt!!! This is a terrific song from one of my all-time favorite artists. Not bad for a New York City Jewish boy! He was on a spiritual quest for most of his life (might still be for all I know). You can hear it especially on his Jonathan Livingston Seagull album... really powerful stuff. Also on the Jazz Singer album (the movie is terrific!). This song was released in 1969. I took a quick look at the album cuts and on the flip side of the album is a country song (!!!) called You're So Sweet Horseflies Keep Hangin' Round Your Face! It's actually a great song and the best version of it is on his Hot August Night concert album (originally 2 LP's). You should really listen to that whole album because it's so darn good. It was 1972 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. He even addressed the 'tree people' at the beginning of the concert. The venue is an outdoor amphitheater and folks who couldn't get tickets would climb trees that overlooked the bowl and watch the concert from there. Neil was hospitalized for a couple of days after that concert for dehydration. He puts so much energy into his performances! I saw him a few times, once at the Cow Palace in San Francisco (no longer exists). It was an addon show and he was exhausted when he came out on stage. Then the applause hit him and you could just see him suck up all that energy! You could literally see him inflate! He put on a fantastic performance that night!

If you listen to Brother Love from his Hot August Night Live album you will appreciate it so much more!

If I remember correctly I read many years ago that Mr. Diamond stated that he was inspired by a revival/camp meeting that he actually stopped into. I hope I got it right. I was raised Babtist and attended many revivals including Billy Graham's Crusades multiple times. But my one grandfather was a Pentecostal Missionary and when they let loose in their camp meetings it was like nothing a quite Babtist boy had ever seen and heard. Years ago traveling revivals were a thing from the early Methodist revivals of the 1800's and were still active in the 1960's and 70"s. I imagine they are still our there somewhere today bringing an intensity that has to be experienced to be understood. This is my second favorite Diamond song after Solitary Man (gotta love those horns in that one). He has been one of my favorites since I was in grade school. So much talent! Great reaction to a great song by a great talent.
@terri2494

Yes, you remember correctly. Neil is a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn who was in the South supporting the Civil Rights movement when he decided to go to a tent revival meeting. He thought beforehand that he would probably write about how the evangelist was emotionally manipulating people to exploit them but when he was there he realized that something real was happening. He didn’t get saved but he got a great song out of the experience. I was raised Southern Baptist and later became a nondenominational charismatic so I can appreciate the difference in the two types of revival meetings. I imagine tent meetings have been around all along but in the last few years they have been growing in popularity. Mario Murillo, who has been an evangelist since the Jesus movement in the seventies, has had 3,000 people show up during an October thunderstorm in western New York. They had to turn away hundreds of cars. He did a series of tent meetings and kept having to order larger tents. Last month they were up to a tent that can hold 5,000 people. He says he’s never seen anything like what’s happening in this time. Solitary Man is a great song. I hope she does that one soon.

. . . God bless your late father, God bless guitars, GOD BLESS NEIL DIAMOND!.. All the way back in late ‘72, just after Neil’s 10-night, sold-out, stand at ‘The Greek’ in L.A. and before his 20-night, sold-out ‘season’ at ‘The Winter Gardens’ on Broadway - decades before any other rock performer, he stated the following ; “ Not before I’m gone will I be fully appreciated; they’ll say “The Beatles wrote this and Neil Diamond wrote that”. I do believe with hindsight Neil was underestimating his talent’s and the very great many around the world; ‘past, present and future’ who recognise ‘the best of the best’ when they see, hear and feel it .

I have not seen too many comments indicating impatience with you not catching all the lyrics. Everyone of us has trouble with that, especially with harder-edge rock. I have always been impressed by how much you and a couple other reactors get on first listen; comprehension more so than individual words. It’s the story that counts, though I am a lyric enthusiast.

I hate it when people criticize reactors for not catching every nuance of a song on the first go around - although it can be frustrating when the lyrics are straightforward and well enunciated! It’s easy to criticize when we’ve known the song since we were kids and don’t even remember the first time we heard it. It’s good to remember that they’re responding to the music as well as the lyrics. They also have to think about the technical aspects of recording the reaction, and for all we know they’re having family drama or they have a sick cat throwing up on their bed during the reaction. And poor Britt has been pregnant and having “morning” sickness at all hours for months but she kept that beautiful smile and we never knew until she made the announcement. Like you, I’m impressed with how much she and some other reactors catch on the first listen.

First time seeing your channel. Great reaction; one of the best I've seen for this song!

In a way, religion IS Theater. Look at the lighting, the costumes, the dialogue all designed to evoke some emotional appeal to the higher power. Ultimately it boils down to your personal beliefs and devotions, but having a swing band and tunes to 'Catch the Spirit' sure goes along way to make the spirit feel good.

Neil has written most of the songs he sings. He Sings Hallelujah and Morning Has Broken…although he did not write these songs…he sings them masterfully!🔥❤️💎

In the old days(late 1800s to the early 1900s) Pastors traveled in a horse drawn wagon, like in the cowboy movies, and they had singers, and missionaries and it was like the carnival coming to town, only it was a "Gospel" show/revival and the town basically shut down and they had church, and it lasted for days instead of hours. That's how the "good news" was spread back then before radio or television. I love the pastors name on the side of the wagon "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show." It was like a Christian circus! God Bless

I was so thrilled to see you were reacting to this song. It's always been one of my favorite Neil Diamond songs, so fun! I can't tell you how many time I'd set the needle back to the beginning of this song to listen again. CD's are much more convenient, LOL!

Oh man. This brings back memories. Back in the mid to late 70’s my mom had a long cool Pontiac convertible with an 8 track player…

There is a 1973 live version that is cool to watch. He has a red shirt on that you can probably spot in a thumbnail

Neil of the Jewish faith was just being the lyrical genius he is by describing what he came across that night as a youth. You will notice he didn’t say anything negative about brother love, but just spun his description as only he can. Back in the 50’s and 60’s and probably longer, there were tent revivals that travelled town to town because those small town churches couldn’t hold large revivals themselves. Oral Roberts was one of these tent revivalists that became successful in different ways later

You could almost tell in the very beginning, the way the Piano started off, followed by that awesome Bass Guitar this was going to be a great song. But...I love the way Brother Neil builds his story up to the punchline with that great sounding chorus, then right back into the piano intro at the beginning of every verse... Magic... Pure magic the way Brother Neil paints a picture with his words and artistry. 👍 I play this song, every Easter.

Check out his performance of the Brother Love on the Johnny Cash show back in 1970. It's on RU-vid. Brother's. Love is 54 years old this year.

I taught 8th grade and when we got to scene setting, and building images with just a few words, I would play this song for my class. The whole thing is poetry.

Britt, you need to check out the 1971 live version in England where he explains the song before singing it. It adds so much. And the song sounds so much better live in this performance!
