*I'm deaf in my right ear which is why I'm not wearing headphones. I know, it's a bummer not to get the panning sounds. It's also been a bummer to only have one ear my whole life for lots of other reasons, like, playing telephone growing up, I was terrible at it. But, I'll be ok, and I'm getting both channels in the earbud, thanks for your concern :)

This song if I remember correctly is more a sarcastic response to the huge commercial success they gained after the song Creep from their first album which made them really jaded and cynical towards their fans because they hated that song from the beginning even trying to sabotage it with Johnny's guitar attacks yet it blew up and they became the band that had that "creep" song. So their "iron lung" is that song that launched them because "where would they be without that song (iron lung)" So the salt is real with this song lol

I am wondering if they hated that song, why they sang it at the first place ? 🤔
@vixo551

@@sipenarekbecha7193 Sometimes when you make an album you have to make a certain amount of songs, so you ended up making some songs that you're not satisfied with. And if a song that you're not really sure about gets to the level that Creep got… I'm sure you're going to hate that song

The iron lung is "Creep". Thom hates that song, but it gave them popularity and financial freedom, so it's their "life support", despite being "a total waste of time" from the pure art perspective.

@@SOMA-no2gq Why my parents named me LuckyKidA, I will never know. BTW, Soma is one of my favorite songs. I was at a Mellon Collie concert in Salt Lake City and they had fired their drummer (who I love) and were touring with Filter's drummer. In the middle of the concert Corgan spotted a guy out in the crowd who was waving a huge sign "I DRUM". Corgan had him crowd surfed to the front and allowed this kid to drum for the song Soma, then quickly fired him. I will never forget that.

I am so freaking pumped that you're doing Radiohead now. Tool and Radiohead are both in my top 5 favorite bands of all time. My understanding of this song is that they were so stressed out and pressured to follow up their previous hit, "Creep" that they felt imprisoned and claustrophobic, and used the imagery of an iron lung to show that claustrophobia. That line in the 3rd verse "This is our new song, just like the last one, a total waste of time" shows you exactly what they think of Creep, and also of writing songs to be hits in general. Also, the guitar stabs in the middle of that verse are very similar to the ones leading into the chorus in Creep.

I'm probably one of the few people whose favourite bands are tool and radiohead so I'm here for your journey Jersh. I think you've picked pretty well to start with The Bends. Pablo Honey has its moments but it wasn't until this album that they started to find their confidence and identity. Word of advice, Radiohead are a band that have evolved their sound with each album almost more than any other I can think of, so I would advise exploring each album before moving onto the next in chronological order rather than jumping around.

Totally agreed with this. You really should do Radiohead in roughly chronological order because jumping around is just going to be disorienting with the stylistic shifts. I do think that Pablo Honey has some worthy cuts, but everyone (including the band) just loves to shit on it so much.

Me too. 1. RH 2. Tool. As excited as I am for Jersh to hear some of the gems on every album I will have to reluctantly agree with the chronological order process. I would have had a hard time jumping from The Bends into KidA without a gateway album.

Wow wasn't expecting Radiohead.. hope you take jump down the rabbithole.. Try Street Spirit from same album.. video is amazing.. other early tracks: Blowout Bulletproof.. I wish I was High and Dry Fake Plastic Trees Those should keep you occupied before you hit OK Computer album. There first album (Pablo Honey) was very much in the vein of the Brit Rock of the early 90s.. second album (The Bends) shows a turn into a different direction.. then they go off the deep end for OK Computer. From there every album has been a completely different experience.. There's a reason Deftones were called the Radiohead of metal.. you're going to see a band evolve over 30 years like no other

The song is about their first hit “Creep”. An iron lung is a medical device that keeps yourself alive, but it restricts you. Metaphorically speaking, “Creep” was the band’s iron lung. The record label was pressuring them to come up with a follow up song that sounded like “Creep”, but they were more interested in developing a more diverse sound. They are grateful for "Creep" , their iron lung, but at the same time were not thrilled about duplicating the same style of music for every single hit song just to appease others. The lyrics brilliantly mock this mentality. Suck, suck your teenage thumb Toilet trained and dumb When the power runs out we'll just hum This this is our new song Just like the last one A total waste of time I interpret the chorus as being directed at the record label.
