1. The chicken rotisseries are just one in a series of onstage jokes. In 1996, Geddy Lee (singer/bassist) began doing what’s called “running direct.” This is when you run your guitar/bass through a small direct box which is wired straight into the soundboard. You can attach it to different tone pedals to get the sound you want without all the big amplifiers and speakers, so his side of the stage was empty. Over the years, he decided to fill it in with the following: 1996-97, fully stocked refrigerators; 2002-03, three functioning Maytag dryers filled with tour shirts; 2004, two dryers and a rotating vending machine; 2007-08, the chicken rotisseries; 2010-11, a giant “time machine;” 2012-13, a new time machine. The chicken rotisseries were also part of the theme for the tour as it was in support of their Snakes and Arrows album. It played on the idea of the snake in the henhouse, and they referenced chicken throughout the concert’s videos. 2. The Barbies are easy to explain. Rush was mainly a “guy’s band” and was largely shunned by women. So, that was their inside joke of being the only way of getting women to their shows. 😂

Both Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Geddy Lee (bass/vocals) have kids. Niel Peart (drummer/wrote the lyrics to all of their songs) had a wife and daughter who tragically died one year apart in 97 and 98. His daughter died in a car crash in 97, and his wife died of cancer in 98. Peart took time off from Rush at that time and took his motorcycle around the world as a way of coping/therapy. Peart then died of cancer in early 2020. They all grew up together, so Pearts death hit Lifeson and Lee quite hard.

Rush are Canadian Rock Royalty (as well as one 3rd behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for most gold and platinum albums ever) and played together for 40+ years before retiring. Geddy Lee on bass, keyboards/synth and vocals, Alex Lifeson on guitar and the late great Neil Peart on drums (as well as songwriting) are legit legends, and they have so many amazing songs. What gets to so many people is there are only three of them and yet they can sound like an orchestra. Also if you want your mind blown, watch a Neil Peart drum solo... The man could play like nobody else.

Well, technically, in honor of Neil being such a technical drummer...lol, his last name has a direct link to Scottish origin, Perth to be exact from the 12th century, in which Perth is believed to be lineage from pre 10th century Northern England, and the Pictish people with the surname Perta. Or as The Professor himself has said in many interviews that there are over 8000 Peart surnames in the U.S. and thousands more in Jamaica who mostly pronounce it 'pert', and that he'd prefer that anyone not from Ontario or Scotland, just pronounce it like the shampoo. He stated it falls off American tongues, much more naturally in that pronunciation. Either way, he had a great sense of humor about it, and never was pretentious about such things, as is shown here in one of the best "funny of die" clips every made. Tom Sawyer was the signature song off their most successful album Moving Pictures. The entire album was full of hits and in 1981 when it came out they were the "it" band that summer. The rotisserie ovens were there to balance out the stage. Alex, the guitarist liked his stack of amps but when Geddy, the lead singer/bassist/keyboard player started plugging into the arena system the stage looked unbalanced so they started putting popcorn machines, clothes dryers and yes rotisserie ovens on that side to balance it out. They used to throw t shirts from the dryers to the crowd and I read in one article that the chickens went to various area homeless shelters after the show. The band was notorious for having mostly male fans and the barbies are kind of a joke to give them a female cheering section and finally all three guys are master musicians being amongst the very best at their chosen instruments especially the drummer Neil Peart (pronounced Piert) whos considered, along with John Bonham to be the goat and also wrote the bands lyrics.

If you think the music is out of control, go back and read the lyrics. There's a reason why the drummer Neil Peart was called "The Professor". Between his GOAT talent with the drums, he was also their lyricist for nearly all their songs. These three musicians were really the "total package" when it came to progressive rock. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Rush appreciation. Personally, I'm happy that I was able to see them over a dozen times in concert and able to take my kids to see them three times. My wife even got to meet Geddy and Alex - an experience well worth the effort.
@corwinchristensen260
@corwinchristensen260 Год назад
Geddy's voice smoothed and deepened a little over the years. His highs were not quite what they were earlier in their career. Still awesome, just different. Listen to the studio track and you will understand. All three of them are using both hands AND both feet to produce what you are hearing. The depth to which Rush played to the fans and each other literally takes years to completely wrap yourself into (it's worth it.) The Easter eggs; amps -vs- washing machines / rotisserie chicken / popcorn machines; dolls and toys on-stage; nicknames; liner notes referencing everything from Armageddon to sesame street; literal jabs at society and authority; it's all that sense of humor and don't take us too seriously even though we are serious mixture of the obvious and nuance that they shared with us for over forty years. Lyrics that have stories on the surface and meaning in their depths, almost parables. Three of the greatest of all time, showing off and yet not stepping on each other. Sometimes called a "three piece orchestra." This is one rabbit hole that is absolutely epic ... please do more, you can't go wrong.

The reason is... most bass cabinets have not been mic'd for decades, mainly due to stage volume causing feedback. A DI, direct input, was used as a feed straight to the mixer. Thus, Getty eventually saw the uselessness to have cabinets on stage, especially since in ear monitoring has replaced most classic stage monitors. The guitar, drums and vocals are still on mic, but his bass cabinet hasn't been in the mix, or currently his headphones, since the 70's...

So to balance out the stage because he had no "Stacks" behind him they started with clothes dryers. Then they swapped to the Chicken Rotissories. So at the end of the show the band and the crew (roadies, drivers, basicially everyone) all feast on the chichens that were cooked during the set.

The one and only Geddy Lee on lead vocals, guitar and keyboard (custom design that he could literally play with his feet while playing guitar AND singing vocals (Now THAT'S multitasking), Alex Lifeson laying down those killer bass licks and singing backup, then there's my hero... a true percussionist in every sense of the word. The Late Great Mr Neil Peart. In addition to doing all of the percussion, he sang vocals and was the musical genius who wrote about 99% of their music. While we only ever see him playing drums on stage, he was also talented on the piano and guitar (so yes, he could play around with tracks in his home studio, figure out which parts sounded good with what, dub it all together and just walk into the studio, spool up the tape and present the entire song in one smooth shot for the others to hear and start delivering their input into "let's tweak this here, sustain that note there, etc" but the changes were usually relatively minor and they could crank out a full album in as little as a week if they had really wanted to, but none of them were that sloppy or blasé about their music. "Let's take the time now to get it right and present exactly the right sound and avoid trying to make changes on the fly while on tour (sure they could have done it, but why put themselves through the stress when they can get it done and done right before hitting the road?). Sadly, Neil passed away in 2020 from brain cancer and the world is a much smaller place without him. To me he was, and always will be, The GOAT

Rotisserie chickens, clothes dryers, etc.

Barbies were an ongoing joke. Guitarist Alex Lifeson didn't have the Amps that Geddy Lee did, so for stage presence, the Barbies were his groupies.

They actually used the rotisserie's (and more often washers and dryers) to make up for the space that was previously used by giant amplifiers from when they did stadium tours. Oh, and the chicken is given to their support crew after the shows

Geddy Lee had the Chickens or washing machines etc behind him as a joke for the guitarist Alex Lifeson. back when they started they had giant speakers behind them and Geddy moved away from them and didnt want his side of the stage to look empty. those two always had fun with their stage.

So the rotisserie chicken ovens…The previous tour, it was washing machines. It’s because Geddy lLee (bass, keyboards and vocals) had his bas snd keyboards go directly into the PA system instead of traditional amplifiers that are then mic’d into the PA. Since he didn’t have the normal amplifier stack, his side of the stage was empty snd made it look weird. So they came up with different things to fill the space. They all have foot pedals or other methods of triggering sounds and effects. So not only are they playing their main instruments live, they are also playing a secondary “instrument.“ you must watch Neil’s drum solo from Frankfurt. It will blow your mind.

Funny story I heard from them on a documentary. The lead singer (Geddy Lee) and the drummer (Neil Peart) were recognizable in public. One day Geddy and Alex Leifson, the guitar player, were walking down the street in their native Toronto when they were approached by a fan. The fan asked for a picture and Geddy said "sure" so they handed the camera to Alex to take the picture not realizing he was in the band also.

Someone probably already commented on this but the Barbie dolls are there because Rush was famous for having very few women at their concerts. This became less pronounced through the years. But rather than lamenting it, Alex (yes, the lead Joker in a band of people with a sense of humour) poked fun at it. For the rotisserie chickens, Geddy (bass player) used to have his amplifiers behind him but then started using the in-house PA system instead. To balance it out, he puts things like this (and clothes dryers) behind him.

My older (18-year-old) kid's band plays this song, it takes all six of them to approximate the sound that these three make. The singer, keyboardist, and bassist (my kid) reproduce Geddy, two guitarists handle Alex's part, and the drummer gamely tries to imitate Neil.

I know this is an older reaction, but just found it. I've never heard them called the 3 coolest dads on the block, but that's so what they are! Others have explained the barbie dolls and rotisserie chickens. Alex Lifeson (the guitarist) is definitely the comedian of the bunch. In some of their tours they played funny and off the wall skits on the screen before the shows and during intermissions. Their shows especially in later years were just 3+ hours of pure joy. They were always relaxed and like you said just up there playing for fun. If no one was in the audience, it seemed like they still would've been up there having a great time.

First off - the chickens... Sometime around 1996, Geddy Lee (their bass player/singer/keyboard player), started running his bass amp signals from his amp directly into the House PA. All of that is just a fancy way of saying he didn't need all of his amp cabinets onstage anymore. Since they emptied out that space, and Alex Lifeson (guitar player/backing vocalist/occasional keyboardist/Barbiebabydaddy) still had to have all of his amp cabinets onstage, they had to put something in the empty space on Geddy's side of the stage. The first few tours had clothes dryers ("for their warm tone"). After that came the rotisseries ("for their hot, punchy tones"). Next up was popcorn poppers...and other things... The Barbies on Alex's side was probably a roadie's idea, or maybe Alex's, because - as you've detected - they all have goofy senses of humour. And no - no one else ever had the same kind of 360 degree drumsets that Neil Peart ever had (though some came close). You missed the South Park bit only because on the DVDs, the "South Park" intro to "Tom Sawyer" was put at the end of the previous song. There are versions out there featuring the intro - the South Park guys are huge fans and friends of Rush. I was considering sending some of Rush's work your way. They're worth diving deep into as far as their music goes. And unlike most rock bands, their musicianship is top-notch, their lyrics are staggeringly original and literate, and their creativity is extremely wide-ranging. Enjoy. This is a whole new world worth hearing.

I know this answer is months late, but I can explain the chickens: Rush realized the venues they were playing provided way more power than they needed for their shows. They didn't have flashy pyro or lights, and they didn't have massive sound systems, so that power wasn't needed for the show. But it was there for them to use, and it didn't cost them anything, so on this tour they brought in rotisserie ovens and roasted dozens of chickens each show, which they then donated to local food banks.

As for the chicken and the dolls, the chicken come from Geddy (bass) not needing amps on stage anymore because the soundboard was able to create the sound he likes so he plugs straight into the soundboard. Since there weren't going to be any amps on stage he filled it with rotisserie chicken ovens to feed the crew. One tour he put washers and dryers there for the road crew to clean their clothes. The dolls are a old inside joke. For most of their career they've been known to be a guys band, or a musicians band, meaning guys or musicians only liked them so as a joke Alex (guitar) made his own 'female" fan club that held signs and stood front stage in front of his guitar pedals. On another note you should find the video that has the South Park intro. Best way to intro the song.

The chickens are an inside joke between Geddy (singer, synthesizer player and bassist) and Alex (lead guitar). Alex insisted on keeping his stacks of amps even after huge amps were no longer needed to project the sound to the whole arena so when Geddy downsized he felt the stage was lopsided. They started out with washers and dryers on stage behind Geddy and actually did their laundry while performing sometimes. I got to see Rush twice in 2007 and 2013 before they stopped touring and Neil (percussionist) passed away and they had replaced the washers and dryers with the chickens by then. A stage hand came on stage partway through the set and took a bunch of the chickens backstage without any explanation or acknowledgement from the band. Apparently they used to feed the crew with the chickens as a thanks for all the work they did. Rush is my favorite band if you can't tell.😂😂😂

Alex Lifeson, the guitarist, is a comedian. Check out his R&R hall of fame speech. Rush has never taken themselves too seriously and is probably one of the reasons they lasted so long. No over the top egos. Historically, Rush shows are comprised of men. Therefore, the Barbies in the audience. Geddy Lee, singer/bassist/ keyboards, used to have giant speakers behind him also. When he started playing through the house speakers he brought in things to keep the stage balanced. Clothes dryers, I , the beginning. This tour a person would come out and based the chickens during the show. The roadies and stage crew had a feast after each show. Neil Peart's set is really 2 drum sets. One acoustic and one electric. It turns around. I suggest watching one of his many drum solos. Your next song should be Xanado. It is older and more progressive.

Chicken & Barbie: Geddy stopped using large stacked amps as tech allowed him to play thru the sound system. Alex still has his behind him for sound. To visually balance the set, he put different large items on his side. Washing machines, Rotisserie Chickens(which the crew ate after their work). ,ect. Alex has put goofy things like trolls to embellish his effects-pedal setup. The Barbie dolls w signs are a play on the joke, that for a looong time the band's fan base was 95% male. . BTW, the band played 40 yrs together, but Alex & his wife Charlene have been married 48 yrs now & a couple since 1970.
