Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan toured together, they flipped a coin for who would open for who the first show. They alternated opening each subsequent show, respecting each other’s chops. It really was two shows, with Jeff Healey opening for the pair when I saw them. Jeff Healey, a young player showed he belonged as a young hot guitar player coming up.

The year before he died he did a concert in my town. Before the show he came into a pawn shop to look at guitars, something he did often, and sat down for a 20 minute jam session with a couple local muscians. Those of us who were there stood quietly in awe as this legend played. Nobody said a word, we just soaked in the sound. A moment I will never forget.

Thats a great experience to have. I saw him once live, in 1986 in Melbourne. It was a double bill with The Fabulous Thunderbirds. A great show. Jimmy came out on stage and played with his brother on couldn't Stand the Weather. I seem to remember in the encore Stevie walking back on stage with a twin necked guitar, and he squatted down and started playing, then his brother joined him, stood behind him and played on the other neck of the guitar.

A blues icon unlike any other. A man who took the style of Hendrix and injected pure Texas desert blues with a nice dash of pure rock n' roll into it, and created a sound in the 80s that even to this day no one has ever been able to imitate or equal. Pure soul and pure feel. RIP SRV.

He was good friends with BB King and Albert King and all of the greats, and pretty much without exception they all said that Stevie was the greatest they had ever seen. Eric Clapton said it best when he said Stevie was like a conduit. He didn't play the music, but rather allowed it to flow through him. He was also extremely humble and one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. I fear we will never see another person as talented, and if we did they would undoubtedly lack the humility and grace of SRV. RIP Stevie

My son was in high school in 1993 when he told me I had to hear this outrageous guitar riff. I listened and said "Yeah. Stevie Ray Vaughn was incredible" Son: "What do you mean was ?" Me: "There was a helicopter crash a couple years back" He actually got tears in his eyes - - - and listened to SRV for a solid week.

Heart is hard to define but yet distinguishes great from GOAT's. 230 years ago Mozart died yet we still listen in awe. Stevie, growing up, always thought himself ugly. Socially embarrassed, he hid himself in his room, pouring his loneliness and blues into his only friend, his guitar. Even after being coaxed out of his room to grace us with his talent, he still hid behind his signature black hat. Such a sad loss for us all.

I saw a documentary about SRV and it talked about how he viewed himself. Stevie was beautiful, inside and out. It's sad that he thought himself ugly, but danged if he didnt pour the beauty out in his guitar playing and singing.

Great comment. I saw him live first at age 15, now 45 years ago. BB King, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and for good measure Brian May thrown in the mix, SRV did at all, apparently effortlessly so even. The raw integrity of both his voice and guitar are beyond outstanding.

He and his brother Jimmie grew up in South Dallas (Oak Cliff).... he is buried there.... He cut his chops in the music scenes of Dallas and Austin.... A true Texas hero.

This is the first time I've heard Stevie's voice called "delicious" and I can't agree with you more! As for the El Mocambo - affectionately known as the "Elmo" by us Torontonians - was a small venue, seating about 400 that was an old haunt of mine back in the 70's & 80's. They had incredible bands that were just about to explode on the music scene - Cheap Trick, Blondie, Meatloaf, Tom Waits, U2, Elvis Costello, Joan Jett, Ramones.....and so many more. Think the biggest band that played there (1977?) was a one-nighter with The Rolling Stones, advertised as The Cockroaches. No one had a clue they were the Stones!

What's amazing is, is that SRV would pop 13 gauge strings all the time. I tried to play 13 gauge strings once, I couldn't bend them at all and they were exhausting to hold down. This performance is what happens when all the cosmic tumblers click into place and the channel between the artists and the universe is wide open without any interference. SRV here, exists both in and outside of himself. RIP SRV. BTW Chris Layton on drums on Tommy Shannon on bass are absolute beasts.

Yeah, there are a couple of interesting videos on RU-vid documenting Stevie switching out guitars in the middle of a song without missing a beat after breaking a string. The man was just an awesome performer. Whether or not he was the GOAT is really subjective but he is most certainly up there with them. A lot of his contemporaries certainly thought very highly of his skill. Agree about Double Trouble being beasts and when Reese Wynan joins with his keyboard artistry it's pretty magical.

Every time he played one of my acoustic guitars he had to be careful as I never ran heavy strings like he did. One of my best memories from my time in Dallas was jamming with him and Boz Skaggs out by my pool until the sun came up. That was in the early mid '70's but it is one of my treasured memories.

Your reaction, is the reason why his departure from this world, was so heartbreaking to us SRV fans. He had just started living in the light for himself and cleaned himself up and was living .....after several years of living in the darkness of addiction. Then was killed in a helicopter crash on August 27, 1990. Lost my favorite guitar hero! I truly still choke up listening to him shred! I've got everything that he's played on ! He was David Bowie's guitar player for a bit!

Anyone that has never heard SRV never expects the voice that comes out of him. The man had more soul in his fingernail clippings than I've ever heard from anyone else in the blues genre. And he mostly used his his guitar to express it. Every note that came out of his instrument was a whole verse, in itself.

I love watching people discover Stevie for the first time. I met Stevie for the first time when we were both kids in Austin in 1978 or 1979. I was going to UT, and he was playing the club scene in Austin 7 nights a week and slept on pool tables with his brother Jimmy. I last saw Stevie in LA at the Greek Theater about 5 days before he passed. Music hasn't been the same since.

Kick that legend to the curb. Though the Devil is always looking to make a deal, it's never a fair one. He's wickedly transactional and manipulative, whereas God is not. The Heavenly Father gives freely out of His goodness, hoping for us and helping us to make the most of what He gives. And you can see an example of God's generosity in Stevie Ray Vaughan. It goes beyond the natural talent, beyond the physical capacity, beyond the intuitive senses given Stevie and far beyond the open channel to develop and display those amazing gifts. The Lord helped SRV understand and avail himself of the strength to overcome his early exposure to alcohol and drugs and the music scene's reinforcement of the addictions that had taken hold. And more, beyond that! In his humility, Stevie Ray... at the foot of the Cross... was given a much greater Gift at the foot of the Cross, which even Death by helicopter could not rob.

Neuroscience has proven it’s physically impossible to listen to SRV without making a stank face. The “warping” is done with a whammy bar that bends the strings & lets you do all kinds of musical effects. The reason his strings don’t break is that Stevie used notoriously thick, heavy strings which made the guitar even harder to play, but helps give him that insanely rich sound. No, this isn’t shredding, which is just showing off. This is the real deal.

This song is an epitome of what everything blues is about, a relationship gone bad, his heart in turmoil, his guitar crying, in pain, confused and then angry. But realizes what she has done to him, putting the relationship behind him as he put the guitar behind him. Leaving her brought him relief. Stevie didn't plan this out, he played this song from his heart and guts as one with his instrument. It just happens to be the greatest performance by any musician ever recorded. As a beginning guitar player, I got to see SRV live about a year before he died. Later, when I was playing in bar bands, I was totally SRV inspired (although not nearly as good). He was an amazing talent taken from us way too soon!

He was a very humble man. There are videos out there of him playing with some blues legends, so so good. I saw him at an outdoor concert when he played this song.

David Bowie (you will eventually get to him as well) saw SRV playing at a small festival and had him play on China Girl, Let's Dance and Putting out the fire. He begged Stevie to join his band but he refused wanting to play his own music.

The record company offered Stevie a deal but they didn't want Double Trouble. Stevie turned 'em down flat. Took a few years but eventually he couldn't be ignored any longer and he got that contract with Double Trouble along for the ride.

Only time I ever saw him in concert was about 3 months before he was killed. I had considered studying for my college finals that night and hopefully just see him at a later date. I'm so glad I didn't waste what turned out to be the only opportunity I'd ever have to see him. He was taken way too soon. Just a true blues virtuoso.

If I had listened to my buddy back in the day, I would have been at the El Mocamba in Toronto to see this show. Problem was, I was not able, at the time, to appreciate the genius of Stevie Ray Vaughan. I'd never get another chance. To the kids out there, drop the stupid in your life as soon as you can.

B.B. King used to say "You have to be black twice to sing the blues but he never noticed with SRV." I was lucky enough to see him live at the capitol theater in Passaic NJ, 1985. The song that will for ever stick in my mind was "With out you".

Great reaction! Stevie has a lot of out of this world performances, he is always better live! Tragically, he was killed in a helicopter crash in August of ‘90, he had just performed with Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy. To me he’s the GOAT, but music is very personal to people, some may disagree and I can certainly understand. You should definitely check out more of this performance, like his version of Voodoo Child. ✌️❤️🎸

The very first time I ever heard Stevie Ray back in the late 80s on the radio I went straight to walmart and bought myself my first Stevie Ray Vaughan album. "In Step" was the name of the album and from there I memorized every note he played in my head. I could sing all of his solos!

Great reaction! Stevie was brainmeltingly good. Funny you should mention BB King - SRV played with BB. Stevie had such great respect for the elder Bluesmen who came before him. You really should check out SRV and Johnny Copeland doing “Tin Pan Alley.” It is a masterclass. I’ll also suggest “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Look at Little Sister” from Austin City Limits. Oh, and “Little Wing” from this concert - no vocals but it’s a beautiful performance. Stevie was mesmerizing.

I remember hearing David Bowie's "Let's Dance" album for the first time and the guitar was amazing. Soon after, Stevie Ray hit the airwaves with his first successful release, and I KNEW that I had heard that guitar before. It was a sad day in my life when the helicopter crashed.

The "slowing down warp sound" is from using a tremolo bar. As for popping strings he used 13 gauge strings. Most guitars use 9 or 10 and 12 or 13 on a acoustic Guitarist joke. Q: How many guitar players does it take to cover a SRV song? A: all of us

I was blessed to have seen him live with BB King shortly before he passed away in a smaller venue and I have to say it was mesmerizing to watch him play....he didn't just play the guitar he was part of the guitar plus the strings he used were so thick and he played so hard his fingers would bleed....I've never seen anything like it before and being older so I've seen a lot it was an experience to say the least...he played a lot with BB and BB's brother which we're his mentors so enjoy girl watch more!!! This song kills me every time. My brother won our state's Road to Memphis blues competition playing it. He didn't win the final but he is incredible. Literally one out of a hundred and fifty from three hundred million to be invited from across the nation. Mindboggling talent and a great kind hearted person. Love you bro.

The crazy thing is that he used 13-gauge strings which are the thickest made that arent custom for his guitar. It gives a different sound and tone but the strings are extremely hard to bend and just play in general. He was one of if not BB King's musician favorite BTW.

His voice is showcased on "Ain't Gonna Give Up on Love" A song he wrote, LIVE video at the Capital Theatre. And always on his playlist. He ranges from soft blues to growling and testifying about love. The guitar solo is received with applause and he gives a little smile in acknowledgement. He was a compelling musician and man.

Hi Britt. Stevie did break a lot of strings lol. In fact there are vids on YT of him playing live and a string pops. He keeps playing and his guitar tech (who was also the best in the biz) comes out with another guitar and they swap them out without missing a beat. BB King had an almost father/son relationship. BB used to tell folks that he was Stevie's godfather. There was a TV special that had all the best guitar players around on. I think (if I remember correctly) SRV was touring or something and missed the show. So all these other guys are on stage. BB, Albert King, Eric Clapton and many more. They were asked (kind of jokingly) OK guys who is the best guitar player around today? Nobody said anything until BB said "Well Stevie is doing some interesting things". Every one of them said yeah Stevie is probably the one. BB has also said that SRV was better than Jimi Hendrix. Huge loss when he passed.

Watching people react to SRV is precious. Elizabeth aka the Charismatic voice reacted just like you - giggles, goose bumps and whoops too (a different live version of the same tune). What a gorgeous reaction to witness. His records will forever be in circulation wherever I am at. Such a gifted guitarist, singer, and performer. He was a conduit, a channel who knew perfectly well enough to be continually inventive and fresh, indeed - giving the impression of endless creative flow. He was heavily influenced by Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, Kenny Burrell, Hound Dog Taylor, T-Bone Walker and many others, and whilst he can quote them at ease, he fused everything into his own inimitable voice - one note and you know it's him, like BB King, Albert Collins, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson and so many other unique guitar voices. I don't comment much, but. I love the fact that she absolutely gets it. Her description is perfect (exhausting, that poor guitar, etc.). That guitar is unplayable.. he literally played it to death. There was also a piece of scaffolding at a show that fell and smashed his guitars, and almost his guitar tech.

I love your reaction to this performance. You caught everything, and analyzed it perfectly. Stevie's amazing natural gift for guitar was so absolutely incredible as to almost be indescribable. It's as if he simply thought a note or phrase in his mind, and it just emerged out of his amplifier's speakers, as if his guitar just becomes an organic part of his body. And no, that's not shredding. That's organized melodic magic. Shredding is just fast, loud, and distorted, but not usually the least bit musical.

Did you know that he, and some other blues musicians, don't (can't) sing and play guitar at the same time? BB King once said that he (BB) plays the blues in sentences and sometimes has to stop and think of what else to say to keep the conversation going but that Stevie played the blues in sentences and never ran out of things to say. This song is a great example of that. He has an incredible body of work to explore that will delight you. For more vocals check out "Aint Gone 'N' Give Up On Love" from the Capitol Theatre 1985.
