This is a cover of a Jimi Hendrix song. Stevie was a HUGE fan of Jimi as am I. Jimi was before my time but I saw Stevie play live and it was life changing he was that amazing. Little Wing was recorded by Jimi with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchel in about 20 min of studio time left. Chas Chandler was his manager who was in the band the Animals and Eddie Kramer was the producer. Stevie bought the very same year and type of guitar Jimi played, same amp, same peddles, even the same patch cord. Stevie was right handed so even played the same guitar as Jimi who was left handed but could not afford a left handed guitar so played a right handed guitar upside down. Both these men are gods of rock/blues music. If there is an afterlife hope they are jamming together. That would be heaven.

This is such a right on comment. A few more totally random comments: SRV is wow. Hendrix is wow. I once saw a comment (jokingly) by Jeff Beck, stating that he wanted to quit playing once he heard Stevie. There are actually words to Little Wing. And ... when I was growing up, I once went to a music venue...pretty small, maybe about 50 or so capacity. George Thorogood was playing. In the audience was Stevie. Thorogood saw him, called him up on stage and handed him a spare guitar ... and they jammed for a song. IT WAS F'IN FANTASTIC.

@@StanSwan - I agree ... but it was quite the show, seeing those two play together, having totally different styles and making it work. I wish back then we had something to capture that with...still, there's about 50 or so of us that carry that awesome memory.

Little Wing (by Jimi Hendrix originally) does indeed have lyrics, but there aren't many of them: Well she's walking, through the clouds With a circus mind that's running wild Butterflies and zebras And moonbeams And-a fairytales That's all she ever thinks about Riding with the wind When I'm sad, she comes to me With a thousand smiles she gives to me free It's alright, it's alright, she says it's alright Take anything you want from me Anything...

The most spot-on comment I ever read about reacting to Stevie Ray Vaughan went something like this... "My wife and I watched an SRV performance. Afterward she said, "Stevie Ray Vaughan makes my ovaries quiver." I thought that captured it perfectly! Since you've seen two songs from this 1983 show at the El Mocambo, you might want to check out mind-blowing performances from the 1989 Austin City Limits show. Stevie was clean and sober and looking great! My favorites from that show are Voodoo Child, Riviera Paradise (another instrumental), Cold Shot, Couldn't Stand the Weather, Crossfire, Tightrope, Look at Little Sister (smoothest guitar switchout ever when a string breaks), and Mary Had a Little Lamb (yes, it's the nursery rhyme and you should see what Stevie does with it for sure). By that time an amazing keyboard player (Reese Wynans) joined Double Trouble along with drummer, Chris Layton, and bassist, Tommy Shannon. Another great pick is the live performance of Tin Pan Alley at the Montreux Jazz Festival where Stevie plays with one of his idols, Johnny Copeland. I think you'd love his vocal delivery on that one! Thanks for the joy of your reactions!❤

The reason he stepped towards the mic the first time was to play a wah wah (or Cry Baby) pedal. You control the timbra of the guitar signal creating a sound as if the guitar is crying. The stick thing is called a tremolo bar (or whammy bar) it tightens (pull back) or loosens (Push down) the strings.

As a lifelong, and I'm old, SRV fan I must say that I really enjoy your reactions to "My music" It is nice to see a new generation relish in what is truly greatness, no matter when it happened. Just like when I was a young child, laying on shag carpet, with headphones plugged into a console stereo. My mother was the driving force, I had it all, from the Beatles, Barry Manilow, Dio, Led Zep, Frank Sinatra, Van Halen, Queen, Musicals (my fave is A Chorus Line), Rock operas, Jimmy Buffett, Waylon & Willie, I could go on and on. Bottom line, I, like others obviously, enjoy watching you enjoy the beauty of music - in all forms. Thank you Britt, you are a good one.

To answer the carpal tunnel question, that's one of many injuries and things that don't get spoken about enough. Every instrument damages you. Wrecks your hands, fingers, forearms, shoulders, back, neck. Add in drums and you'll trash your knees too. Musicians are walking injuries. Sacrifice the body for the music. Very common.

Some thoughts: "he could play while in a coma". Interesting you would say that because legend is he was in a cocaine induced coma an hour before this show and had to have medical attention and IV to rehydrate. This is from the 1983 show at a Toronto club called El Mocambo. The show was apparently televised on Canadian TV. The heavy sweating is in part due to the heavy drug use. He later cleaned up and got even better. You should check out his 1989 Austin City Limits show for a clean and sober SRV.

Stevie was a massive fan of Jimi Hendrix. He also was able to do a jam with Albert King. I grew up in Texas and would hear his guitar work on my radio. Him and Jimi made me want to learn guitar. Innovatively, yes Jimi was better. But in every other way Stevie topped him. He was technically superior, was cleaner in his delivery, had a deeper, grittier tone, and he played a guitar with extremely heavy gauged strings and high action. It took incredible physicality to be able to manhandle those fat wires and play with the precision that he did. I know the whole Stevie versus Jimi argument touches a lot of nerves, but there you have my two cents. Anyway, have a nice day. @@BUTTER-oc5gs

Stevie definitely is communing in this song, and the alchemy in the mix of his musical soul and skill creates gold... a faultless interpretation of Jimi's music. I can't say that Jimi's "Little Wing" is anywhere near a favorite song of mine of those Jimi created, but to the respect SRV gives it, and the appreciation and tribute he gives Jimi's intense, innovating spirit, the result from Stevie's hands is superb. Britt you nailed so much in your analysis. I've never heard of Stevie having problems with his hands, but he also had amazingly strong hands- his guitars had thicker/reinforced necks and he used extremely thick strings, to the point where other guitarists struggled to play his guitars. Just a comment about how quiet the audience is in the video- I was lucky to see him twice and both times the crowd sat still and quiet just like they were in church. To this day I have never seen anyone as good at what they do as Stevie was- live you just knew something special was happening, it was just hard to say what? You didn't want to take ANYTHING away from his talent or hard work, but there was something else, something bigger in the room.

Others have said Little Wing was composed and recorded by Hendrix. The song actually has lyrics which are short, simple and beautiful like a dream in many ways. However, many guitarist cover the song as an instrumental because it's such a great progression and groove to lay down a solo over, just improvise, drift off and be yourself. SVR's cover is likely the most impressive. 😉SVR, the music just flowed from him. Well, she's walking through the clouds With a circus mind that's running wild Butterflies and zebras and moonbeams And her fairy tales That's all she ever thinks about Riding with the wind When I'm sad, she comes to me With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free "It's alright", she says, "It's alright" Take anything you want from me, take anything Anything Fly on, little wing I'm sure many people would ponder what those lyrics even mean, Just to me is a state of mind as a man music is a mistress, beauty who's awe inspiring, loving and empowering - she's the zone.

Thanks, Britt! All respect to Jimi... but SRV is astonishing on this respectful cover...appreciate your reaction... (I heard a quote from Stevie where he said something like: "I don't play with much finesse.. I usually play like I'm breaking out of jail"..lol)

You nailed it. The music didn't come from his mind. He played straight from the soul.

I saw SRV live several times in the 1980s. He was otherworldly. I've never heard Stevie compared to Prince, but I can accept that. They were both small/short men with eccentric dress styles and big sonic sounds. Both were guitar virtuosos who went "to another place" on stage, channeling the music through them from wherever it came. Astute observation from someone so obviously clueless about what she was watching, so I'm giving your review a thumbs up for pulling that rabbit outta the hat :)

They say when he played he was a portal for all the greats before him to play through. He was the last true MOJO! He had the magic hand.

I had to take off work when I heard he died. Took my dad to see him, my old man with big headphones 😂. Saw him twice, both times at the El moCambo, Toronto (pronounced “Tronno”) I’m glad the venue was a club…great tone and loud as F.

Yes, it was from the El Mocambo show. I'd suggest "Voodoo Child" from this same show. Epic!
