@@farfromperfek i've only seen them once, at their 20th anniversary of the "summer nationals tour". during the original tour, they were supporting their album "smash", which went on to sell millions of copies. but on that tour (in '94) they were the opening band. when i saw them (2014), the lineup was the vandals (my favorite band), bad religion, pennywise, and then the offspring. i saw the show in philly, outside the electric factory. while in line, fletcher from pennywise was walking by, he saw my shirt (it was a blue short sleeve work-shirt, with a pennywise patch and my name embroidered on it, bought off the rack at a hot topic in '99, and it's the same shirt I've worn to every show i've been to since i bought it). he said to me "nice shirt" and went on his way.
@@natecloe8535right? I’ve never heard the offspring called underrated. Not with how big Self-Esteem, Pretty Fly, Why don’t You Get a Job, and later You’re Gonna Go Far Kid were. Maybe this song was a little underrated though
I think you missed it if what the video is showing isn't enough to tell you.A childhood neighborhood with all the usual dreams and plans for making a happy life for those kids, but where did it all go wrong. From young marriage ,drugs and drinking, low self esteem jobs, and suicide...I would agree that the kids aren't alright. Got to love the energy of The Offspring.Always sending us pertinent messages about the neighborhood.Dexter Holland eternally young .The remaining original member of the band and a very brainy guy, rocking the science world in a punk body suit.
Yep, he wrote it after going back home many years after he "made it" and expected to see or hear all about his childhood friends being similarly successful in whatever they aspired to do, and instead seeing one ruined life after another.
The lead singer has a PhD in Molecular Biology. Great late 90s music, along with Green Day. Yer one of the best reactors on the tubes of you, because you actually REACT to videos, not just pause and shout "this is fire". Would love to see you react to a band called The Doors.
One of several California punk rock singers from that general era who have PhDs - Greg Graffin of Bad Religion has a PhD in zoology from Cornell and Milo Auckerman of the Descendents has a PhD in biology from UC San Diego.
The changing of tbe rooms is basically the changing of person. If you look closely, some scenes depict opposites. Some depict what the person was before, and how they turned out to be. Basically, the singer dexter went back to the town he grew up in in orange county. And he saw his old friends and what they ended up like. And he remembered the promises and bright futures they had and how life ended up so differently.
YES 1990 ROCK!!!! I FREAKIN LOVE IT!!!! Rabbit-hole time "SELF-ESTEEM" "WHY DON'T YOU GET A JOB" "PRETTY FLY" (FOR A WHITE GUY) "GONE AWAY" Just to name a few 👍🏼 Keep up the good work Brittreacts
The entire song is about how the kids don't turn out alright: The Kids Aren't Alright - by The Offspring *Lyrics* When we were young, the future was so bright Woah-oh The old neighborhood was so alive Woah-oh And every kid on the whole damn street Woah-oh Was gonna make it big and not be beat Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn Woah-oh The kids are grown up, but their lives are worn Woah-oh How can one little street swallow so many lives? Chances thrown Nothing's free Longing for, used to be Still it's hard, hard to see Fragile lives Shattered dreams (go!) Jamie had a chance, well, she really did Woah-oh Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids Woah-oh Mark still lives at home 'cause he's got no job Woah-oh He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot Jay commited suicide Woah-oh Brandon OD'd and died Woah-oh What the hell is going on? The cruelest dream, reality Chances thrown Nothing's free Longing for, used to be Still it's hard, hard to see Fragile lives Shattered dreams (Go!) Chances thrown Nothing's free Longing for (what), used to be Still it's hard, hard to see Fragile lives Shattered dreams
The video took your focus off the lyrics let's do some more *(OFFSPRING)* *(Pretty Fly) (Why Don't You Get A Job) (Gone Away) (Self-esteem) (Gotta Get Away)*
That’s a great song - I kind of think the Dead Kennedy’s “This Could Be Anywhere” tells this story on a community level, with a stronger gut punch in the lyrics. They saw the kids and the community were not all right way back in the early 80’s.
A fuller context is knowing that The Who (1 of the big 3 bands of the British invasion) had a very large hit titled "the kids are all right". I don't think this is a rebuttal as much as it is a, "nowadays the story has changed" commentary.
90s videos were amazing. Lot's of new technology emerging at the time, coupled with the record industry pouring countless millions of dollars into their production led to some fantastic stuff. That being said, it's come out that a majority of that money was spent was directly out of the pockets of the artists themselves due to horrible contracts. The recording industry had a majority of the artists by the balls. But I guess we got some pretty damn good videos out of it!
Time passes. Things change. The older I get (I was a young man when this came out) the more I think about it. The people I knew back then and the dreams we had. Not many are living that dream today. Not all are living. Fragile lives. Shattered dreams. They're all around us.
I know what its talking about i always remember this one boy talking about wanting to be a football ⚽️ player. It didn't work for him and i saw him working in a shop a few years ago.
Awesome song and video, it just shows different realities, we start out with dreams; but life has other plans, for reasons within and without our control, these dreams either come true or they don't, these dreams coming true or not has effect on us, it can destroy you either way; so be careful what you wish for because it might come true, and that dream might become a prison, so even though a room might look like crap, if the person keeps playing that electric guitar and smoking medicinal herbs and is happy, he is free; where as; if a person is in a really fine house with the perfect family and a job that pays good money; but his dream was something different; then he is trapped in a prison that he can't escape, it's all in how you look at it, their is this story, this man had something really bad happen in his life; and all the people said we are so sry; but the man said it could be bad, it could be good; then something absolutely wonderful happened to the man; and everyone said wow how blessed you are; the man said it could be bad, it could good; I say it could be both, good and bad; so smile because maybe we need both 😊
So, this song came out when I was late teens. So, late 90s. Before social media. It’s about kids doing what kids do and growing up to become adults later in life. Some make it, some don’t. Some are happy, some aren’t. With everything that happened in the 90s, there is a reason GenX is the way it is.
Bear in mind, this was one room, low budget video clip AND this was a band that how Linkin PArk started, "to the emo teens". Listening in todays mind (40) even the pop/light rock back then was amazing, the talent is no question.
I love that you're getting to experience Offspring! Personally, I'd love to see you check out their song "Gone Away" and then check out the cover of that song by Five Finger Death Punch - but for the cover, you HAVE to watch the music video.
chances blown, nothings free, longing for what used to be, still its hard, hard to see, fragile lives, shattered dreams.. basically about people throwing away opertunities due to struggles like he mentioned about people dropping out for kids and people overdosing e.t.c
For me the songs is about when you are young you have dreams becoming a doctor or laywer being succesful but when you get older reality strikes ans you go in a way you are going to be, not what you wanted to be, and it sends a message that people have changes in live but you need to do effort to take them
Yes, another band crossed off the list I've been wanting you to react to. Dexter this singer has his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. Plus graduated HS the same year I did. (so I now feel like a failure lol) They often come across as a goofy fun band, but their message is political, and the behavior of people.v
There’s three other songs, you should check out by them. 1) Dividing By Zero/Slim Pickens Does The Right Thing And Rides The Bomb To Hell 2) You’re gonna go far kid 3) Hit that
Punk band from the 80’s that blew up in the 90’s punk renaissance. Definitely more of a well produced mainstream form of punk, but I wouldn’t call it “pop punk”. The songs were about things other than love songs!! The 2000’s were crappy emo pop punk bands.
...and over funded. This songs popularity from being the opening song in crazy taxi game at Walmart lobbys. The only thing fun while our parents shopped
You somehow missed the point of all of the lyrics in the song. It was all about how the kids are not alright. "How can one little street swallow so many lives?" "Jay committed suicide, Brandon ODed and died" I generally really enjoy your reactions but every once in a great while you seem to get kinda lost in the visuals of a video. It's very easy to do on this one.
I hate this music video just because it's so distracting to people trying to listen to the music and the visuals are so insane that you can't help but watch them
I love your channel & I have been enjoying your videos! If I might make two suggestions: 1. Permanently ban the person trolling as "you" trying to get your subscribers to a scammer sight and 2. Please redo your intro to *remove* that fake "typing" sound effect.
