it is similar to me. not necessarily on the same street, but most thebl kids I grew up with are either doing well, doing good, have kids, have become addicts, have OD'ed, or died. its a real trip when you think how much is changed in 20 years, reminder I'm 28
This song hits harder the older one gets, I remember headbanging to this in school not giving a damn about the lyrics or maybe not taking them seriously, now after a dead friend, ruined lives, shattered dreams and struggling to find anyone who actually achieved their dream amongst your friends it really hits you.
Dexter Holland, the blond lead singer, was class Valedictorian in his High School. He then got his Bachelor of Science in Biology and His Master of Science in Molecular Biology from USC. "He was a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Proteomics Research, Keck School of Medicine. In March 2013, Holland and co-authors published a paper in PLoS regarding microRNA in HIV genome. Holland was awarded his Ph.D. degree in molecular biology during the USC Commencement on May 12, 2017". He was the one who clearly "survived" his neighborhood.

This song hits home from me. Grew up in a small town. Got outta hoghschool at 18 and moved around. Going to job after job. Finally moving back to my hometown at 30. Expecting nothing to have changed. Got a job at the local jailhouse as a night guard. Literally half the inmates were the people i called my friends back in school all those years ago. Those that werent in jail were addicts. One, like the song. Commited suicide. And the girl i had the biggest crush on is now married with three kids. Times changes people. It took me leaving and coming back years later to see that.
Good call :) I was actually looking for this reaction earlier. Amazing song, but it breaks my heart. As a child, most of us wanted to be adults for the freedom, without even knowing how unpredictable growing up, and reaching adulthood actually is.
@@87Khein Totally Agree! I loved Vultures as well. I remember I was in 2nd grade and had a copy, but my parents confiscated it after looking at the lyrics. Little did they know I had multiple copies lol
This song and video are extremely creative, one of my favorite videos ever! Unfortunately it’s not more popular. The Offspring have some of the best song writing I’ve ever heard. This particular song has a very sobering message about young adults and growing up.
They was a huge punk rock, pop rock/ alternative rock bands in 90’s and early 2000’s. Had a awesome sound. It’s cool to see more ppl getting to know them these days
My favorite offspring song. This song hit so much harder after getting older and watching what happened to most of my friends from the neighborhood. Countless friends passed away, many went to jail and two are even homeless still battling addiction. I was lucky enough to get my life together and I have a family now but I had 2 best friends pass away, one by taking his own life and the other by overdose. Still miss them everyday and it breaks my heart that my kids never got to meet them. RIP juju and Chad.

Love that you guys are branching into rock from the late 90's- early 2000's. Check out Rise Against. I haven't seen almost anyone reacting to their music.
If you havent heard Gone Away listen to it.. Great song from Offspring. This is Offspring gettin "deep" Just checked the vids on the channel you guys reacted to Gone Away but its was the 5 finger Death Punch cover.. IMO Offspring version is better
5FDP is a pretty good band and all, but nothing can compare to the sheer emotion and deep pain in Dexter’s voice in that song. It’s his song, because it’s his trauma and emotions, his loss. No cover could ever compare to that.

Hailing from Japan here. This song just hits. Not even different. Just hits. Universal shite right here. I wasn't alright, my friends weren't alright, and now my generation is getting to 40s with our own kids. So now I see different perspective which makes things even more sad. Love the song.
Not sure if you're aware or not but "The Kids Aren't Alright", "Why Don't You Get A Job?" and "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" are all on the same album (Americana)

That music video would have cost a lot of money to make with all those animated effects! :-) I remember Def Leppard's music video Let's Get Rocked cost $350,000 to make back in 1992 with the latest in cutting edge animated effects back then! :-)
These video effects were new when this song came out the same time Michael Jackson did black or white and they use the same morphine special effect technology. Like guy said it was very new and cutting-edge at the time it was released.

this song means more the older I get, the number of future dead 20-30 somethings that I knew growing up is crazy, then there's the ones that had kids and dropped out or went to Prison or a couple went to the military, a few just up and vanished no one knows if they died or moved and a couple just went completely nutters. My city eats people and it's stupidly hard to even try to escape it, oh you might get out but most likely something will bring you back.
Please listen to "Building the Bridge" by REO Speedwagon. It's one of their lesser-known songs, but the meaning to the song is very relevant to what has been happening today.
I wonder if he ever found out about what happened to, Kristy. Dexter Holland seems to carry a lot of weight on his shoulders as one of the survivors of the 'old neighborhood.'
