Layne was a completely different beast than other singers. A lot of people become taken by the vulnerability Layne showed in his singing and writing. He never lied, never said things were grand, he always just put it all out there. Having been there from beginning to end...I think we all knew it was coming. We watched him deteriorate over time. And MTV Unplugged was painful to me (I don't know about anyone else) because he was in such rough shape. I wish he didn't have to struggle like he did, but at the same time that struggle is what made him captivating. I miss that guy, every day, and I'm grateful we still have the music.

You are feeling EXACTLY what us Gen Xers felt when we heard Layne 30 years ago. They definitely did play this live and they were so powerful it was incredible. I saw them in Glasgow they nearly destroyed everybody there with their sheer intensity. The pavement outside afterwards looked like a disaster scene, metal heads everywhere collapsed on the ground exhausted and delighted 😆

I could see why you could think the lyrics were Layne's cry for help(he did put a lot of emotion in his singing), but Jerry wrote a majority of the songs including Down In a Hole. Layne actually was very supportive of Jerry and pushed him to sing because he wrote most of their songs. Now a great song Layne wrote, Angry Chair. Go through whole albums, Facelift an amazing debut album then they followed up with Dirt, just an unbelievable talented band.

Hi Aileen, Personally the most heartfelt but also heartbreaking song for me that I've heard by Layne is with his band "Mad Season", the song is called "Wake Up" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x6E0Z8wqNDQ.html The first time I watched Layne perform this song was live @ the Moore Theatre 04/29/1995, Seattle. He was absolutely one of the best lead vocalists to ever live...up there with Cris Cornell R.I.P. this was from their incredible debut album which is a top 8 maybe top 10 debut album of all-time. The song was about censorship. Layne Staley said "I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf. " Cantrell said "It's about how government and media control the public's perception of events in the world or whatever, and they build you into a box by feeding it to you in your home. And it's about breaking out of that box and looking outside of that box that has been built for you."

Layne Staley and Geoff Tate of Queensryche (along with Ann Wilson of Heart and Chris Cornell) were trained by the same West Seattle-based vocal coach Maestro David Kyle. All four were really powerful singers and I'm guessing that is the connection.

Another one of my favorite bands ever! (Actually, I'm pretty sure I say that every time you post an AIC, SOAD, or Pink Floyd reaction video). From my understanding, this song is about censorship and how bands/musicians/artists are controlled by their labels, producers and media. Animal cruelty is the metaphor here. sounds like your listening to the radio/MTV edit, the original line at the beginning is "I'm the man in the box Buried in my SH!T" and later "I'm the dog who gets beat Shove my nose in SH!T" the song is alluding to being about a soldier that is a *prisoner of war* and how they were treated during the Vietnam War and using that also as a metaphor for deep depression and him pleading to Jesus to come and save him, but no one does, not even Jesus. . . . he asks "sow my eyes shut" so he can't see his "shit" his pain anymore, and also "feed my eyes" as in be given the light of enlightenment, salvation, freedom from the box of shit and pain he's inside of

Live version? Moore Theatre 1990. It will blow your mind and then some. Their entire prrformance at that show is flawless.
