No effing doubt. Awesome. Nothing else to say. Terry said it all with his voice, on tracks, and guitar. I've been doing rock since I was around eight years old (almost 64, cue the Beatles) . This is one of the most defining guitar solos of all time. Unfortunately, not enough people got to experience this man.

At the close of this song the Singer says something like "Take Care!" He actually said "Terry Kath!" One of the true greats on guitar, and a unique great on vocals as well. Terrible loss that he died young! If I had to pick the "greatest year in pop music" it would be 1970. And 1971, 1969, 1968 were also greatest years. Every year in the 60's just got better up to 1970. And the early 70's were perhaps the greatest years, with the later 70's continuing to innovate. Nothing against the 80's or 90's, but the 60's-70's was the best, glad to have been alive.

Actually,guy-- he jammed that entire guitar solo, and lengthened it alot longer than the studio version. He left in elements of the studio track, but this is a perfect example of 'improvisation' and longer live jams that most bands did in concert. Try their version of 'I'm A Man'-- it'll (again) blow your mind. most of their early material is just jaw dropping stuff! Enjoy..T

Terry Kath passed in 1978, from accidental self inflicted gunshot to his head. Playing around with guns always ends badly. Such talent gone in blink of an eye. I saw them several times live, as recent as the 2010s. I admire bands that pull together in tragedy. Many bands have done in a time when drugs, alcohol and violence permeated the industry. But watching them is so important. Robert Lamb on keyboard, kept up with Terry the whole time. The horns… gosh they were incredible. Each guy did lead vocals especially after Peter Cetera left. I saw James Pankow on trombone, sing lead, do a trombone solo and then finish the vocals. Where do they get enough oxygen to do that? And this was recently. They are not kids anymore. It’s pure talent. Yes, we were very lucky. The 70s and 80s were special and it will never be special again.

Gotta love the way they just sort of drift into the intro, almost like it was accidental. Bands like Chicago, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Sly & the Family Stone invented the genre that wound up being called “fusion”. Sly and the Family Stone - you absolutely MUST do a studio/live comparison on Sly and the Family Stone.

I was only 8 years old when this concert was performed, but I had a brother who was 9 years older than I was, and he always bought the BEST albums, so I grew up spoiled. You haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the greatness that was the late '60s and early '70s. It was just a cultural convergence that will never happen again. And the best part about it was that the music was free on the radio and concert tickets were dirt cheap.

In my opinion, one of the greatest guitar solos EVER. He lit that guitar on fire, spanked it, and put it to bed without any supper. My parents had front row seats to see them in 1970 and asked me if I wanted to go. I was 7 so I said I'd rather play with the kids next door. What a bad decision.

It was a wonderful time to be alive. As you said, the music was fun. It was also somewhat political and rebellious, yet mainly positive and upbeat. In addition, there has never been a guitarist-singer in the history of rock n roll that has anything on Terry Kath. Nobody had an edge on him, nobody,

No auto-tune, no remixing, no lip syncing---just pure talent on display with masters of their craft jamming together. Because so many of these bands formed in garages and played small venues and festivals to start out, none of the automated stuff available today would have even worked for them. They HAD TO sound on their records like they sounded live because that is what the public was buying---no digital downloads, and if they were LUCKY enough to get on the radio they better sound like they did in person. You should see some of the concert posters with multiple bands playing the same venue--many of them look like Grammy Hall of Fame performances.

The Tanglewood concert is the best one to watch on YT for live Chicago with Kath still alive. I love how Danny is still setting up the drums and Kath is just warming up and then just starts on the song and they all have to start joining in, LOL...such a hoot! Tanglewood is in the Boston area. And I guess you know it's 25 or 26 minutes to 4:00 am for the song title. Trying to write a song. RIP Terry Kath...I'm sure he's back again 🙂And yes, our music back then you couldn't tell the concert from the record, most of us had to go to concerts to see our bands perform, wasn't that much on TV to see except Ed Sullivan and other shows like that and American Bandstand but not all of these were live compared to lip syncing. So yeah, bands played concerts at colleges and football stadiums all over the place in the US for the fans and to earn some $$. Willie Nelson had his 4th of July picnics as well so special events like that as well...and then of course, Woodstock in '69. Also keep in mind that in small towns and rural America we had to drive to larger cities to go and see bands too so that was part of it as well but another reason why colleges brought in bands all the time too.

Never the same after Terry Kath passed away & Pete Cetera left but kept it together. Always felt they were a bit dismissed but receiving respect today they should have received then. Thank you for loving on this great band. Totally agree the late sixties into the late seventies was the best time for music. We had no isea how spoiled we were! From the mid 60's to the 90's were the golden age of rock and roll. At 65, this was my era, and I feel comfortable saying that my era was the greatest era in the history of music. It is not even close! I went to packed concerts about once a month for years. We had Chicago, the Eagles, Boston, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Led Zeplin, Elton John, Queen....just so damn many great bands. Their original guitarist here, Terry Kath had died in 1978 I think so I didn’t see him but my god they were mind blowing live! I’ve seen more live shows than I can count now but Chicago was only my second concert and I thought my head was going to explode trying to keep up with their talented energy! Concerts weren’t expensive either. They’d charge a couple of dollars to get in. Back then, bands toured hoping that if they played well you’d go buy the record. These days they expose the music hoping you’ll pay a couple hundred dollars to see them play. Competition brings down prices and forces great performances. “Introduction” next, please. And I've continued to see shows on and off ever since then and really I went to lots of shows in the 80s but I also was playing in a band constantly. Not only was the technology so primitive compared to today's standards for live shows, when I look at these old videos, the lack of anything like a cell phone is striking. There just simply wasn't anything like that at the time and not for quite a while after.

This was one of my Father's favorite bands. I grew up hearing them on my Dad's record player all the time. They say that pain and struggle are fuel to artists. The stuff they lived in and dealt with from racism to the Vietnam War to rampant political corruption they poured the pain into some of the most beautiful and well written songs ever! I feel lucky because at that time period racial lines in music started to disappear. People were free to play rock,r&b or blues no matter what your race was. The fact that I have always been open to like all genres is because he exposed me to real music like Chicago and The Doobie Brothers.

I was a freshman at Oklahoma University in the Spring of 1970 when they came to the campus Field House; it was epic listening and moving to their songs in a packed house. And everything they did was the long version, not the chopped "radio play" or even the album play. I think Jimi had the last show to ever play the Field House. As the years have gone by, this music has made me even more respectful and grateful for what we had with so many bands and artists in the 60's thru 70's. But also in the 70's we lost some many great artists that you mentioned, including Terry in 1978.

The difference between music then and now is the absence of the internet and youtube. They had to put on a good show and rely on word of mouth to get people at their shows. The 70's were a decade before my time of concert going but I remember my mother and her friends talking about live music. They would go because of a song they knew on the radio and discover other artists they never heard of that blew their minds. Going to the record store was a regular event and that's where you bought entire albums or heard about new ones coming out. I think that's where you bought tickets, too. There was no cable or even a way to record local TV stations so you either made time to watch shows like Soul Train, The Midnight Special and Solid Gold or you didn't know what they looked like until you saw them live. 😂

Right, MMB; this was 'normal' music for us back then. 'Hey, you wanna go see Chicago Saturday night?' We sure appreciated it, but didn't realize what an impact the music would have in the future. Great reaction! Subscribed.

It was a special time for music and its great that you're keeping it alive. Chicago was a big group back then. It was an era that was perfect for such musicians and writers to flourish and have the freedom to create great music.

I just saw this very same group of musicians play this very same song, 53 years later. And they still sound damn brilliant! That is a very long time to be this good.

@@mkenific true. But as long as Robert and Jimmy are still there performing, as least l can still get a taste of what was my favorite band. And remember Robert and Jimmy wrote the most songs for the band

Bro, you have my musical sensibilities. Chicago was great, and I understood that at about 12 years old. The first 3 albums. Period.

Here's what Jimi Hendrix said about Terry Kath, Chicago's guitar player. Like pretty much everyone who came to see the band perform, Hendrix was mesmerised by Kath's guitar playing, going so far as to claim that he thought the Chicago guitarist played six strings better than he did, naming Kath the “best guitarist in the universe”. High praise indeed.

This, as the Studio cut are equally amazing. Talent and performance skills are what makes this happen. Also, having all the live instrumentation that exists in the record surely helps 😉 Edit- Terry's guitar makes this even better than studio. Amazing

You know, man, that's a good idea. Comparing studio and live performances. The differences are so amazing. Do it. We know our comparisons are so much fun. We really enjoy ourselves.

In 1969 they were named CTA when they played on a pier overlooking the beach in Venice Beach California, I hadn't heard of them or listened to their music but it was a free concert. I was tripping on lsd and they were totally mindblowing with the lead guitarist shredding and the horn section hot, hot, hot. Trippy day at the beach listenin to CTA live.

I was a teen and learning the drums and I would play along with Chicago, and Yes, and CCR, and Janis, and the Beatles and everything on the radio in the 60s and 70s. Oh yeah, and Santana.

You definitely have a new subscriber because you GET it! I just turned 68 and this was our music! And the guitarist Terry Kath died in the most stupid way imaginable. Playing with an "unloaded" gun at a party and shot himself in the head. And you were talking about the deaths of the great artists. There's a thing called "The 27 Club" and it's a club nobody wants to be in. It's a very long list of artists that died at age 27. And albums? Back when vinyl records were the thing. You'd put the record on side one and flip it when it was done. Meanwhile you'd be kicking back and reading the album notes and maybe pull out the record jacket to see if there was anything else to read there! "Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end."

Start from the 1st song on their 1st album: Introduction, it is the band “introducing” themselves. The horns can’t be beat!

🇨🇦 The music created between 1963 to 1988 is probably the greatest since the Classical music composers ! It has not been matched since ! Today's artists are still listening and trying to re-create it's originality !
