I was in the Air Force when this happened and we (active duty) were pissed. Back then the ONLY people who got into the National Guard were the sons of Politicians & wealthy businessmen, famous people (actors, etc). Being in the National Guard was their guaranteed "Never Go To Vietnam" card. Nixon hated the hippies which explains why The National Guard was deployed to a "Peaceful Protest". For some unknown reason one inexperienced trigger-happy BOZO fired a shot which prompted others to start shooting. Two of the students killed were not part of the protest - they were on there way to class. What makes this even worse is that they did a "hurry-up" half-assed investigation. No one was ever prosecuted, reprimanded, or even held accountable. Yep! Even back then the "Rich & Famous" can get away with murder. I'm 73 and it still irks me whenever I think about it.

I was serving in Nam at the time as a Navy Corpsman with the 3rd Marines in Quang Tri Province up along the DMZ. Didn't hear the news until about a month later. It was horrible for morale and made us wonder who the real enemy was... our own country or what. A sad day and a disgrace to America.

The Kent State tragedy was a major bomb waiting to go off from the start. The National Guard troops that were sent were very young and untrained, and many had never been in any type of pressure situation before. At one point a group of them had been cornered and had rocks and bottles thrown at them before they fired. I am not making excuses for them or for their superiors who sent untrained troops to a heated situation with live rounds. The fact that anyone lost their life was unforgivable and a terrible tragedy.

One of the guys murdered was in ROTC, which I found completely sick but ironic. the coverup by the government's fake investigation they had still makes me want to throw up. the demonzing of the unarmed students killed, maimed, or just there on campus, by moronic adults all over the country was a typical indicator of how ignorant a nation we were and STILL are. Grow up folks, they are still taking your rights away....

Did the article explain that the students were having a peaceful protest against Nixon ordering the (illegal) bombing of Thailand? Illegal because Nixon did NOT ask Congress or Senate, just wanted to unilaterally start bombing. Governor of Ohio declared martial law a couple of hours before the protest, and sent the National Guard. The Guard threatened the protesters with arrest, as per martial law no gatherings were permitted. Students refused. Guardsmen shot tear gas, students threw it back, Guardsmen (who for some reason had live ammo) opened fire on the students. Four dead, twelve wounded. One young man paralyzed for life when he left his class, and was getting in his car to drive away, was shot in the back. Neil Young saw it on the news, took his guitar in the woods, came back a couple of hours later with the song. They recorded it next day, within a week it was being played on the air.

At the Altamont Rock Festival in 1969 they venue hired the Hell's Angels to be the security. During The Rolling Stones gig, when they played Sympathy For The Devil, the Hells Angels stabbed a Black man to death. The Stones stopped playing begging for people to stop the violence. There's video footage of it all. The Stones wouldn't play Sympathy For The Devil live for years after that incident. It also marked the end of the peaceful hippy concert scene.

Here’s another piece of trivia. The Beatles required four yes votes for an artist to be signed to their new label Apple. The Beatles TURNED DOWN CSN after hearing many of those great songs from their first album. No one has officially said but the rumor has always been that John was the one who said no to the signing. Worked out better for CSN and CSNY since Apple Records turned out to be a mess.

Sadly, Kent State University built a fieldhouse on the hallowed ground where the 4 students were murdered by the Ohio National Guard. 🤬

"Find The Cost of Freedom" by CSN&Y should be your next reaction.

The guard was filled with the children of the well connected. It kept them from going to Vietnam, they murdered four students and were never charged. This changed a lot of adults minds about authorities, until then adults were very obedient. Killing our kids in the street woke a lot of them up

Check out the video where the music is paired with a montage of photos from the events at Kent State that day.

Does this guy even know or understand the event that sparked this song?He talks much about the war and conflicts of the day, in general. I watched this entire video response and I didn't see one reaction to the actual deaths of the students at Kent University that day.

A friend's brother was attending Kent State at that time. Thankfully, he wasn't injured. It was a frightening situation. Watch the videos to get an idea of it. I was one of many at the moratorium for the victims held at our college.

I attended there at Kent State in 1972. Still bullet holes in some buildings. My sister was there before me and saw her friend shot dead.

My all time favorite group from the 70’s, Kent state university (ohio)…it was more then going against the government war against Vietnam, going into Cambodia..Ohio governor/of course Nixon brought in the National guards. 3 of the students that were killed (Jmo)were innocent, I believe, not sure if one of them were involved with the demonstration.. (my late husband was involved with the events that happened on the Saturday). May 4th always brings back memories for me.

Check out stories and documentaries about Laurel Canyon to get a better understanding of the california rock, folk rock and 60's music overall. You will be interested at see all of the famous names of that era that lived together or next door to each other. I thing music of the 60's and 70's would have been much different without Laurel Canyon.

Joni Mitchell had relationships with both Crosby and Nash. She is a far greater artist than either of them which must have been hard for them. You must react to her she is premier league
