The perfect age for a boy to watch LOTR. I honestly can’t think of a better series for a boy to see in order to influence him to be a great man later in life. There are so many important life lessons…. Rising to fill the shoes of your fathers, accepting duty with honor and grace. Courage in the face of annihilation. Dedication to the people you love despite overwhelming odds. Strength, but also mercy. It’s a masterclass in masculinity that everyone, young boys especially, should see.

The scene where Boromir had the ring, "so much fear and doubt over so small a thing," well, there was no real hikeable way to get to that location, so Sean Bean had to take the helicopter there. He was absolutely terrified on the way there, and the only thing going through his head while filming that scene was that he'd have to get back into the helicopter again. And he still did that good of a performance.

The thing I’d like to point out about Boromir is actually he is a very honorable and good man. He really is afraid of the destruction of his people which Sauron plays on. If you watch closely, he’s mostly the one who is caring for the hobbits. Teaching them to fight, wanting to let them grieve Gandolf, even in his last breath he was worried about Merry and Pippin. The reason the ring wants him so badly is because he is a powerful man. And when he died, he died a very noble death.

I've always loved how they build up enough story about the Shire and the Hobbits that the audience actually quickly grow to relate to the Hobbits, and why they love their home. Making the audience care about the character's motives really drives the rest of the story. They managed to do the size difference by a bunch of different methods, sometimes CGI in long shots, using scale doubles who were mostly dwarf actors and I think a 12 year old as a double for one of the Hobbits, and also tricks with forced perspective where they'd have two ends of a table that were different sizes and different distances from the camera POV so it looked like the Hobbit actor is small but closer to the camera than they really area, they were really clever with it and it works so well.

The best movie trilogy EVER! The author, JRR Tolkien, who was a professor of English Literature and Languages at Oxford University, spent much of the spare time in his life building this legendarium. His son published 12 volumes of his father's notes along with a few other books, and there were 15 languages (of various detail) he created for this world. He also had written a children's book from stories he had told his young children called 'The Hobbit', which was a bestseller, and it included the tale of Bilbo acquiring the one ring. The publisher wanted a sequel, and 17 years and 1000 pages later came 'The Lord of the Rings'. Peter Jackson made all three films at the same time; he said this isn't fantasy, it's history. He's a director who - unlike so many today - actually respected the source material. Yes he made some changes die-hard LOTR fans didn't like, but the trilogy pretty much pleased both LOTR nerds and non-fans alike, which is a rare thing. This trilogy will forever be a timeless classic. The relationship Tolkien had in mind for Frodo and Sam was analogous to a British tradition known as the batman. (servant sort of) In the British army, a batman was a low ranking soldier who's main duty is to be a personal servant for a commissioned officer. They'd relay the officer's orders, drive them around, maintain the officer's uniform, act as a bodyguard, carrying the officer's equipment or "kit", dig the officer's foxhole, and any other duty the officer didn't have time for. They would often form a close bond, and the batman would often become the domestic servant of the officer, who at the time was usually of the aristocracy. Sean Austin took this literally, and acted as Elijah Woods' gopher when not filming.

Hi Lewis and Kev. Lewis, I was only a couple of years older than you are now when I discovered The Lord of the Rings in high school way back in the late 1970's. I have read TLOTR's every couple of years since then. I also discovered D&D around that time. I have a group of four friends that still play D&D every week online for about four hours a week since the pandemic started. In our younger days we played with paper and pencil. But then life happened, and we got married and had children and careers. Some of us moved away but we never lost touch and remain friends to this day. Our children are even friends. I said all that to say, Peter Jackson did an OUTSTANDING job bringing TLOTR's to the big screen. I understand that some characters, events, and lore was left out of the films for several reasons. But all-in-all Peter Jackson treated the books with love and respect.

The extended versions are really the best ones to watch. Now that you are watching these, you really need to get the books and read them cover to cover (DO NOT skip the appendices!) @@jordancrosno9711 Extended scenes at risk of being missed: 1• Frodo and Sam's first meeting with the elves, providing context for Valinor and the elves journey there, as referenced throughout the films and seen at the end of the Return of the King(connects to the passing of the elves in the beginning of their leaving the shire when Frodo and Sam are near the Old Forest by the Shire which leads them to eventually bumping into Merry And Pippin! (An epic scene with Gandalf in Rivendell was also removed as well.) 2. Aragorn singing the Lay of Luthien, providing a parallel between the events of the Beren and Luthien and Aragorn's relationship with Arwen of which every reactor channel I’ve seen makes the connection and it pulls them into a deeper understanding of their relationship every single time. 3. Aragorn kneeling at his mother's grave, giving him some additional backstory for the viewer. 4. Gandalf explaining to Frodo about the corruptive power of the Ring, and how it will strain the Fellowship from the inside, foreshadowing Boromir's downfall. 5. Sam singing a lament for Gandalf, providing more emotional weight to Gandalf's death, referencing the start of the movie and strengthening the connection between him and the Hobbits ( also highlights Tolkien's love of song and poetry in the books). 6. Galadriel giving the gifts to the Fellowship, providing context for their appearance in later films, as well as drawing a parallel between Gimli's gift and the events of the Silmarillion (Fëanor & Galadriel). That’s just the beginning. Including several removed scenes between Aragorn & Galadriel and Aragorn with her husband Celeborn! 7• also the opening explaining Hobbits & their culture to the viewers, so they have a better understanding of these peoples we will be following which also was the direct full chapter called Concerning Hobbits.

The song Aragorn sings has huge importance! Here is the full version: “The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen; Of stars in shadow shimmering, Tinnúviel was dancing there, To music of a pipe unseen And light of stars was in her hair And in her raiment glimmering There Beren came from mountains cold; And lost he wandered under leaves; And where the Elven-river rolled. He walked alone and sorrowing. He peered between the hemlock-leaves; And saw in wonder flowers of gold Upon her mantle and her sleeves And her hair like shadow following Enchantment healed his weary feet That over hills were doomed to roam And forth he hastened, strong and fleet And grasped at moonbeams glistening Through woven woods in Elvenhome She lightly fled on dancing feet And left him lonely still to roam In the silent forest listening He heard there oft the flying sound Of feet as light as linden-leaves Or music welling underground In hidden hollows quavering Now withered lay the hemlock-sheaves And one by one with sighing sound Whispering fell the beachen leaves In the wintry woodland wavering He sought her ever, wandering far Where leaves of years were thickly strewn By light of moon and ray of star In frosty heavens shivering Her mantle glinted in the moon As on a hill-top high and far She danced, and at her feet was strewn A mist of silver quivering When winter passed, she came again And her song released the sudden spring Like rising lark, and falling rain And melting water bubbling He saw the elven-flowers spring About her feet, and healed again He longed by her to dance and sing Upon the grass untroubling Again she fled, but swift he came Tinúviel! Tinúviel! He called her by her elvish name And there she halted listening One moment stood she, and a spell His voice laid on her: Beren came And doom fell on Tinúviel That in his arms lay glistening As Beren looked into her eyes Within the shadows of her hair The trembling starlight of the skies He saw there mirrored shimmering Tinúviel the elven-fair Immortal maiden elven-wise About him cast her shadowy hair And arms like silver glimmering Long was the way that fate them bore O'er stony mountains cold and grey Through halls of ireon and darkling door And woods of nightshade morrowless The Sundering Seas between them lay And yet at last they met once more And long ago they passed away In the forest singing sorrowless” The true elvish version is far greater and so full of beauty & nuanced mournful sadness that’s break the hearts of mortals from its beauty and sadness so the true song has been sort of taboo and the mannish tongues that retell it is stated to only be a shadow beneath the tree of the true story! (A clip of it is in the original definitive version though. Viggo Mortenson who plays Aragorn designed the melody and style himself and wished it to sound Celtic in nature.) Boromir. - Aragorn sang: Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows The West Wind comes walking, and about the walls it goes. ‘What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight? Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight? ‘I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey, I saw him walk in empty lands until he passed away Into the shadows of the North, I saw him then no more. The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denethor, ‘O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar, But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.’ Then Legolas sang: From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies, from the sandhills and the stones, The wailing of the gulls it bears, and at the gate it moans. “What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve? Where now is Boromir the Fair? He tarries and I grieve. Ask not of me where he doth dwell - so many bones there lie, On the white shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky, So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing Sea. Ask of the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me!’ ‘O Boromir! Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south, But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea’s mouth”. Then Aragorn sang again: From the Gate of the Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls, And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls. ‘What news from the North, O mighty wind, do you bring to me today? What news of Boromir the bold? For he is long away.’ ‘Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought, His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought. His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest, And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, bore him upon its breast. ‘O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze, To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days.

A little detail that I love is that the Ring doesn't bounce. Both when Bilbo drops it and when it first falls from Sauron's hand, it lands with a weight that belies its small size. This is visual storytelling at its finest! The Ring is more than it appears, and it is an immense burden. Both conveyed in a single moment, when Bilbo strains against his own mind to tip his hand that last slight degree and let the Ring fall, and it lands with a thud and lays still.

It took about 8 years for this entire trilogy from start to finish. My favorite fantasy/adventure franchise. I love the fact that there wasn’t really a star character in this franchise, but all the main characters held their own weight individually and collectively and the other characters, extras, etc supported them in that to make an AMAZING TRILOGY!! Peter Jackson did his thing with this one and the stars in it will forever be remembered for it. Fun fact: Billy Boyd who plays Pippin isn’t just an actor. He’s native to Scotland and is also a musician and was a book binder for 6 years and the LOTR trilogy was printed and bound at the place he worked, many by his own hands.

Entire movie was filmed in New Zealand. Did you notice how much Bilbo aged once they met up with him later in Rivendell since the ring wasn't keeping him young anymore? All of the scenes with Gandalf in the houses at first with Frodo and Bilbo were shot via set perspective. Smaller items, actors standing further away from the cameras, tables that were half for Galdalf and half for hobbit so they could be in the same shot and size proportions could remain right. It's genius filmmaking. It's not in the reaction, but you probably noticed how everyone in the Fellowship of the Ring meeting were already being consumed by its pull and it was causing them all to argue and bicker. It's not shown in the movie as much, but Boromir was a really honorable person and him being consumed by the ring's pull just shows how powerless men are to it.

There were two kingdoms of the Numenoreans (men of the west). Gondor in the South and Arnor in the North. King Elendil was the 'high king' ruling from the Northern kingdom. His two sons shared the rule of Gondor. Elendil and one of his sons were killed in the battle against Sauron. The other was Isildur, the one who cut the ring from Sauron's hand. Isildur's nephew was then to rule Gondor and Isildur to become high king. He'd left his wife and youngest child in Rivendell with Elrond. His other sons were also killed in the battle. It was that youngest child of the high king Isildur living in Rivendell that was Aragorn's ancestor. The Northern kingdom, Arnor, was destroyed almost a thousand years before Aragorn was born, but the lineage continued, father to son, making Aragorn heir to both kingdoms. The heirs of the ruined kingdom were each in turn fostered by Elrond. They became 'rangers', great huntsmen, trackers, and protectors of the people in the North, guarding the borders and forests, and hunting Orcs in the mountains. Gondor's last king was challenged by the Lord of the Nazgul to single combat almost a thousand years before the events of this film. He left no heir. When he didn't return, Gondor was left to be ruled by a succession of Stewards, also hereditary.

The Peter Jackson movies are masterpieces but they do Isildur HUGE injustice. In the books, Isildur never succumbs to the ring, he instead spends his time being a fair ruler who practically gave power away to the people instead of being power hungry. He comes to realize that he is not powerful enough to truly bend the ring to his will. That it will eventually overcome him. Isildur resolves to give the ring to Elrond but is killed on the way to Rivendel. It's a tragic story of a man that tries to right his wrong but ultimately fails. In the books isildur literally repented and was about to bring the ring to Rivendell and apologize as he recognized it was beyond him even for a great numenorean connected to the faithful line of the mighty Elendil I preface the prologue & war, other depictions I LOVE, captured the themes WELL, the vibe of the whole trilogy! The significance of the duel between Elendil & Sauron was Nerffed; (He wasn’t some random old bloke in armour getting smacked around) This man was MIGHTY and gleaming with power which you’ll find out in the great videos you’ll soon react to with joy! * He and Gil-Galad; last true Elven King battled Sauron and slayed Sauron’s physical body and both died in the process. GilGalad was held high by the face for all free peoples to see as he then incinerated his bodily form to a crisp of ash! Isildur was part of the fight too but not as prominently and he just comes up to the body to cut the ring finger off and…. So one example is how easily Sauron is killed in the intro. * • He's set up as this super powered badass, but all you have to do is cut off his finger? That's not how it went down in the book, where the greatest man-king and the greatest elven-king had to double-team Sauron to strike down his body, but were killed in the effort (Isildur then cuts the ring from the corpse). Especially for elves the title of king has many meanings & by the Third Age there isn’t a population large enough to even attempt to such a thing as creating a unified kingdom, which would put a target on their backs, let alone many of them are beyond all of that anyway as it’s seen as doing more harm than anything good. * They also seen what happened when the elves fell upon the swords of their own hubris and passion no matter if it was for the right reasons some of the time. That it always ended up in some sort of tragedy which sometimes even damaged the earth itself. They had long known about what’s called the Long Defeat as ever since Morgoth’s marring of the land itself; pouring his remnants into it that caused the “magic” to slowly drain away from the land itself, which is sad because for ages several clans of elves were born there. even the greatest ancestors were “born” in middle earth awakening to the stars ! Many of who are left have accepted the next phase of their life which is to become councillors, healers and loremasters to those with the heart to listen and the desire to learn. But above all the guardians and custodians of several things and the world itself for as long as they can remain!❤ The elves “exist” as long as the world does. And Tolkien made it obvious in many ways that it’s our world as he restored Anglo Saxon culture/Mythologies and folklore, and their languages too alongside Irish, Welsh and Finnish mythologies too. Especially Norwegian(of which I am) This is what Amazon (the show that shall not be named) didn’t deliver either [[AKA the actual story which inspired everything we love into existence with games and movies and books and so forth. Skyrim, elder scrolls, oblivion, Diablo, and world of Warcraft and D&D. And Game Of Thrones was hugely inspired by Tolkien… yet as the godfather of everything and the heart of what caused many peoples lives to be saved cannot get the justice it deserves for adaptations? People literally conquered cancer because of the books and the trilogy, the books were read to their children for years. All 25 of them. The man was a hugely respected scholar and professor in the world. Translated ancient artifacts and hieroglyphs and petroglyphs and so forth for the government etc. (JRR Tolkien even rejected being recruited into the CIA several times & he wrote everyone by letter and referenced the dudes who came to him as “little boys who knew not what they got themselves into” which showed his fearlessness.). The readers of the trilogy that came out are who he writes back to despite always replying to everyone back and forth. Many people have shared the stories regarding these conversations which were past down throughout the family lines of the people who had a personal relationship with Tolkien which was hundreds of people when he was alive. Thousands. (Some are in video format too or happened to be shared later on in the video or comes up during a video about him and his work. Especially nowadays when many of us came out of the woodwork to defend professor Tolkiens legacy from amazons money grubbing hands and so forth. Giving many channels a new lease on life where some make Tolkien related content now amongst other things they create content wise.

Firstly: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves ( which lead to 300-500years of his infiltration & deception down the drain.) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are sort of beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Noldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves meaning deceiver! After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Kelebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey? The Rings in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, & evil in the form of Sauron had been defeated twice already in the past. The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements & questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤ There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted! Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion: 1200 Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens. c. 1500 The Elven-smiths instructed by Sauron reach the height of their skill. They begin the forging of the Rings of Power. c. 1590 The Three Rings are completed in Eregion. c. 1600 Sauron forges the One Ring in Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Kelebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron. 1693 War of the Elves & Sauron begins. The Three Rings are hidden." 'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them. But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained. These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One." The 3 Elven Rings are not susceptible to “The One Ring” in any direct way.. They’re only tied by fate to lose their power if Sauron is defeated completely & absolutely. As they were made by the elves and as always they make things for a purpose and pour their literal spirit into things they create. So if Sauron is defeated then the three rings power will fade and basically become almost useless or diminished versions of their original design since by this era magic has bled from the world by a huge degree thanks to Morgoth’s poisoning the world itself with his very essence that he poured into it. Called The Long Defeat By The Elves and The Men Of The West.

⭐️With a certain clan of dwarves: A giant set of events throughout the ages caused a huge rift between dwarves & elves since before any elf ever saw a dwarf. Elves are the firstborn. Men are the secondborn. Dwarvish forefathers were created by the hands of one of the Valar named Aulë, then essentially Eru Îlluvatar(AllFather) breathed life into them to later wake up at a later date since Aulë was still excited to create things of his very own. It’s also why dwarves overall can resist the rings power and so forth. There were these beings became known as Petty Dwarves in the books where these beings were super hostile and the elves thought it was just another spawn of Melkor (now Morgoth) so when they finally did see actual dwarves they killed them on site. That and dwarves were keen on chopping down trees by huge amounts so you can kind of see why… but this was only the beginning. But it’s not a very good start. Buuut not all dwarvish clans share this rift as the creator of the 16 rings was an elf named Celebrimbor and is one of the best characters ever. His main smithery guild in Eregion was full of dwarves and elves called the “Gwaith Ír Mirdain”. Even Gimli’s father was really close to a certain elf I won’t name yet! ❤ Not all dwarves were enemies to elves. Galadriel and her brother were best friends with dwarves. Famously the fortress of Nargothrond was built by Finrod Felagund with the dwarves! It was only a certain clan that killed Elu Thingol! (Elwë) Galadriel & her elder brother Finrod Felagund were best friends with the dwarves. Finrod was named Felagund by the dwarves meaning “Earth Hewer” from the fact he helped them build the great fortress called Nargothrond of which he was the elven lord that ruled there justly. Was the same for Celebrimbor and the dwarves of Eregion especially the guild called Gwaith Í Mirdain. His bestie was Narvi the dwarf. Narvi and Celebrimbor created the doors of Moria. Moria is also the elvish name for Khazad Dûm. This gift for Gimli set it into imperishable Crystal and would be the only thing left in middle earth that holds the light of the two trees of Valinor (Valanor by the Eldar). It’s basically the uncursed version of the Nauglamir. He named it The Galadramir. ❤ If you search for 'victorian hair art' then you can see what amazing things people created with hair in the past. Craftsmen as dwarfs were, I imagine that Gimli must have created something beyond exquisite! Gimli attacking the ring shows it has no hold over him just like the Dwarvish rings out of the 16 meant to go to the elves had no hold over them. So technically they could easily be used offensively and defensively but many disappeared over the ages mainly due to Sauron collecting them back again over the last few thousand years. One or two eaten by dragons (not simple minded beasts here. They were twisted and enhanced beings by Melkor/Morgoth(Saurons Upperclassman as far as the Ainur face goes.). There were only a few of them and their offspring are lesser drakes throughout middle earth. Most recent one you’ll see in The Hobbit movie and one other most recent dragon left of the originally created dragons was Scatha, of which I don’t think Scatha even has wings or could fly in any permanent sort of way. “Evil cannot create. Only twist and warp what is already natural to the world”

It was in the 1970s when my Dad saw a copy of "The Hobbit" on the table at my Aunt and Uncle's house. One of my Cousins was reading it and told him he could borrow it after she was finished. After he read it (in only 3 days) he told my brothers and me to go into the living room and get comfortable. He turned off all the lights except his reading light and he began. After that, most evening, we'd all gather and Dad would read a few chapters to us. After he finished he had gone out and bought the Lord of the Rings and did the same. We've had a love of the books ever since. I still read it nearly every year. I heartily recommend it!

This is the first "Adult" book I have ever read in my life because I had watched the animated version when I was like 12 or 13 and (back then) I couldn't find the second half of the movie, and I WANTED TO KNOW HOW IT ENDED. So I went to the library and took out 'the lord of the rings', not knowing that I took the entire three books and not just the fellowship. For months, when I would bring it back to the library, my brother would take it out, and when he would take it back, I would take it out. Took me almost a year to finish it and I was never the same. When the movies came out, I was so scared they were gonna butcher the story, but they did it justice. 20 years later, it still holds up as one of the best movie trilogy ever, and the behind the scenes and making ofs are amazing.

@@SofaandChilljust upload the extended edition. Let this be a chance to sit back and enjoy it even more. To take in what you didn’t notice before. This true version has way more character building. For example. - 1• Frodo/Sam's first meeting with the elves, providing context for Valinor and the elves journey there, as referenced throughout the films and seen at the end of the Return of the King(connects to the passing of the elves in the beginning of their leaving the shire when Frodo and Sam are near the Old Forest by the Shire which leads them to eventually bumping into Merry And Pippin!

I always love seeing people see this for the first time. And the movies only get better (in my opinion) from here. Fun fact-the credits are so long because to show their appreciation for their help making the film, they put the names of every member of the Lord of the Rings fan club in the credits. I think it’s like 4000 names or something ridiculous like that.

the book is a masterpiece, widely regarded as the greatest work of imaginative fiction ever written, and the movies, while taking some liberties with the original story(basically because it would have meant movies half a lifetime long, if they'd included everything!) the movies are cinematic masterpieces in their own right....... you guys are in for a treat watching these for the first time.. all the best!!

The elvish songs of lamentation were for Gandalf when they arrived in Lothlórien. So the song you hear is literally for him whilst being a theme for the movie itself. The only excerpt from these songs is "Mithrandir, Mithrandir, O Pilgrim Grey!" This was expanded & set to music by Philippa Boyens & Howard Shore, respectively, for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. It was sung in the said film by Elizabeth Fraser in the track Lothlórien. Notable about this song is that it assumes that the elves of Lothlórien were aware that Gandalf was an incarnate Maia. This is debatable. As well, the lyrics ask "What drove you to leave/That which you loved?". This suggests that Gandalf was well aware that he would fall in Moria. Other debatable verses include the claims that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar, and that with him the Flame of Anor would leave the world (assuming that it and he were one, or he was the only wielder of the Flame). (English comes after the Quenya) * The first part is in Quenya: A Olórin i yáresse Mentaner i Númenherui Tírien i Rómenóri Maiaron i Oiosaila Manan elye etevanne Nórie i melanelye? - The Second part is in Sindarin: Mithrandir, Mithrandir, A Randir Vithren ú-reniathach i amar galen I reniad lín ne mór, nuithannen In gwidh ristennin, i fae narchannen I lach Anor ed ardhon gwannen Caled veleg, ethuiannen. * Olórin, who once was... Sent by the Lords of the West To guard the lands of the East Wisest of all Maiar What drove you to leave That which you loved? Mithrandir, Mithrandir O Pilgrim Grey No more will you wander the green fields of this earth Your journey has ended in darkness. The bonds cut, the spirit broken The Flame of Anor has left this World A great light, extinguished.

The 20 minutes of credits at the end of "Fellowship" included everybody that had been involved in the fan website that was launched when the movie series was announced. Anyone that took part in online discussions was given the opportunity to have their name listed. I was one of those fans. I won tickets to the Fellowship premiere in Orlando,Fl. I have a 18" replica statue of Gandalf that I won on-line. I have a replica "Sting" sword that looks like and is as heavy as a real sword. But when you slide a switch, it glows blue and hums! I also have polystone statues of Golem and Smeagol, The Argonath and Minas Tirith. My wife an I attended a LOTR marathon when the "Return of the King" was released. It included the Extended editions of the first two movies as well. It started @ 9:30 am, included meals & breaks between the movies and movie related giveaways. It ended the next morning at 1:30 am... and 10 years later we did the "Hobbit" movies at the same theater the same way!!!

tackling the extended versions on a first watch is impressive! some people swear by the extended but I think the theatrical cuts are just as good, and can be better for pacing especially if you haven't seen them before. the extended versions are good if you want to see all the bonus content - so much work went into all these movies! glad you both are enjoying the series, thanks for sharing!

The ring lay pretty much dormant for most of the time that Bilbo had it because Sauron was still too weak for the ring to be aware of him. Now that Sauron is back and closer to full strength the ring is determined to return to him. A little info from the book because the movie compressed time quite a bit in the beginning: For the most part hobbits have nothing to do with the world outside of the Shire so they are unaware of the danger that Middle Earth is in. Hobbits aren't considered adults until they turn 33. On the book 17 years passed between the time Bilbo left and when Frodo left the Shire. By the time they left the Shire Frodo was 50, Sam 38, Merry 36 and Pippin only 28. Pippin is the equivalent of what we consider a teenager so not only is he prone to the same hobbit naiveté as Sam and Merry but also the reckless, impulsive and curious nature of a teenager.

When this movie came out, I was deployed to Bosnia. I had two weeks leave and it so happened to be a week after the movie hit theaters. Instead of going home for my leave, I decided to go to Britain and indulge my love of history and meet some online films. I arrived in Birmingham, home to one J. R. R. Tolkien, and so I first saw this in the author’s home town. Sometimes things work out precisely as they should.

Bilbo Walking Song: “Roads go ever ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shone, By streams that never find the sea; Over snow by winter sown, And through the merry flowers of June,Over grass and over stone, And under mountains in the moon. Roads go ever ever on Under cloud and under star, Yet feet that wandering have gone Turn at last to home afar. Eyes that fire and sword have seen And horror in the halls of stone Look at last on meadows green And trees and hills they long have known” The original version of the song is recited by Bilbo in the last chapter of The Hobbit, at the end of his journey back to the Shire. Coming to the top of a rise he sees his home in the distance, and stops and essentially sings what I shared above! There are three versions of this walking song in The Lord of the Rings. The first is sung by Bilbo when he leaves the Shire and is setting off to visit Rivendell: “The Road goes ever on and on, Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.” The second version is identical except for changing the word "eager" to "weary" in the fifth line. It is spoken aloud, slowly, by Frodo, as he and his companions pause on their way to Crickhollow, looking beyond to lands that some of them have never seen before. The third version is spoken by Bilbo in Rivendell after the hobbits have returned from their journey. Bilbo is now an old, sleepy hobbit, who murmurs the verse and then falls asleep. “The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can! Let them a journey new begin, But I at last with weary feet Will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet.” 1977: The Hobbit (1977 film): Sections of the poem are sung during the trip through Mirkwood. It appears on the soundtrack titled "Roads". 1980: The Return of the King (1980 film): A song inspired by the poem is sung at the end of the film called "Roads Go Ever, Ever On". 1981: The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series): Bilbo sings the song as he leaves Bag End. It is sung by John Le Mesurier to a tune by Stephen Oliver. 1997: An Evening in Rivendell: The Tolkien Ensemble adapted an original melody to the song, composed by Caspar Reiff. 2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Parts of the song are sung by Gandalf in his first appearance, and also by Bilbo as he leaves Bag End. 2006: The Lord of the Rings Musical: The poem is the basis of the song "The Road Goes On" sung by Sam, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin in the first act. 2014: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: Lines of the poem partially make up the lyrics of The Last Goodbye, performed by Billy Boyd(Pippin) for the credits of the film. This is just stuff to know when you see the next films. Maybe seeing this will spark something you read here or in other people’s comments via future reactions to the other 2 films as well as the 3 The Hobbit movies!

I like the way they set up Aragorn's moment of of resisting the ring. Firstly he changes his tone in his discussion with Boromir: "I will not lead the ring within a hundred leagues of your city!", possibly subtly hinting that the ring is starting to influence him to see the ring as a task belonging to him to oversee. Then later, we hear that same kind of tone in "WHERE is the ring?", causing Frodo to back away. Of course he ultimately resists, but it always makes me wonder what the odds were that it would go the other way. Might have been real close.

Extended scenes at risk of being missed: 1• Frodo/Sam's first meeting with the elves, providing context for Valinor and the elves journey there, as referenced throughout the films and seen at the end of the Return of the King(connects to the passing of the elves in the beginning of their leaving the shire when Frodo and Sam are near the Old Forest by the Shire which leads them to eventually bumping into Merry And Pippin!
