Well in honor of the Easter season our alpha Patron John decided to pick "Jesus Christ Superstar" (Well, the musical scenes from the movie) Originally made by Andrew Lloyd Weber and the libretto by Tim Rice. The movie was directed by Norman Jewison and screenplay by Melvyn Bragg and Jewison. This was a test to see if it would get blocked or anything of the sorts.... the next part will come out next week! Hopefully to finish up right around Easter :)
This first part was fantastic. I was utterly blown away by the Overture... didn't expect the bus in the slightest. I had my AI camera act up halfway through so I had to turn it off and back on so if you notice a cut, that's why lol.

It is the only real one. This movie took way too many liberties. All the other versions are likewise inferior. Listen to the one with the brown cover. It used to be in the collection of pretty much every music lover alive in the 1970s

I actually like both versions a lot. They serve different purposes and I always had the Brown album first but the thing is I saw the movie as a little kid, in fact it was the first movie I ever stayed twice for in a row, and I got in trouble because I was late home for dinner. I think I was in like fourth grade. But yeah, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple on the original is a real treat for sure, and really everybody.

I still have the original cast recording on vinyl, and on CD. The movie is OK; the John Legend TV performance was pretty good for live -- the original cast recording is matchless. Ian Gillan was _perfect_ as Jesus, and the band played out of their minds.

I loved that it was framed as a bunch of young people traveling to Israel to put on a Passion Play. That narrative worked as a movie where it wasn't necessary for the stage

As someone born in '72 and grew up listening to this COUNTLESS times, it's a delight to watch someone experience it for the first time. I will also add PLEASE listen to the original recording. Nothing and no one can beat Ian Gillian as Jesus. Really.

Oh my gosh this is EPIC! I watch a LOT of movie reactions, and this is the first time I've seen anyone react to this movie. I can't wait for the next installments. When I was in 7th grade, my best friend had the original cast album from the 1971 Broadway production, and we memorized every word, every note. When the movie was released in 1973, we of course went to the cinema to see it, and I bought the soundtrack album and promptly memorized it in full. I've probably seen this movie at least 50 times over the years, not to mention listening to the album. LOVE the music (by Andrew Lloyd Webber, early in his career). While I can't endorse everything in it from a theological or historical standpoint, but my enjoyment of the movie/music is not predicated on exacting accuracy. It is, after all, a story told mainly from Juda's point of view. I hope you are able to continue to post this series. One more thing... Carl Anderson is of course fantastic. But regarding Ted Neely's chops, lemme just say you ain't seen nuthin' yet. "Gethsemane" is beyond description.

I absolutely love this musical. I got to see Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson perform this on stage in i believe 1993 and it was so amazing. also i got to meet Ted Neeley about 5 years ago and he is one of the sweetest human beings ive ever met. thank you for reacting to this

Thank you for doing this reaction, I hope other reactors will follow and do a reaction to this classic as well. This is one of my "GOTO" Easter movies I watch every year. August 1973, I was 16 years old starting my junior year of high school, when this movie came out. I grew up in a very rural conservative area. There were two movie theaters and two "drive-ins" within a twenty-five-mile radius (5 towns). Almost every church in all the townships had their parishioners boycott and protest at the showings of this movie. In my own church, the pastor assigned people to watch for any member seen entering the theater where this movie was being played (theaters only had one screen, not like the multi-plex of today). My friend had an older brother that worked at one of the theaters. He snuck us in the back door of the theater so we wouldn't be caught. I thought then (as I still do today) this was and is the BEST vehicle to jump start the adolescent mind to further thought of "religion". I saw firsthand the positive and negative effects that rippled through our communities during this time. The format you have chosen to do this reaction I think is perfect. I can't wait for the further installments. Keep up the GREAT WORK, and again Thanks!

I got this album, the sound track to the movie, when it was new, as a teenager. I must have listened to it a thousand times. Such great singing. Such a hippie vibe to the movie. Prefet Ted Neely to Gillan. Many people played Jesus in remakes. Can't wait to you get to Gethsemane

Judas at that moment, in everything's alright, had the choice, and probably felt the amazing Love of Jesus, shook to the core. I'm no theologian, and it all had to go down, every character. But when Jesus and Judas, embraced hands...the stare on Ted Neely's face, Shivers!

I bought the double album soon after it came out. A buddy recorded it on 8-track tape so I could listen in the car. On the album Jesus is sung by Ian Gillan, who had recently joined Deep Purple.As others noted you should listen to the album.

Being born in 1966, I grew up watching this film and that of Godspell on the Saturday nights of Palm Sunday and Easter weekends (the local network affiliates alternated the films), and listened to their soundtrack albums throughout the year. My sister and I would argue who got to sing along with Judas and who was stuck with Jesus. I am now lapsed Catholic/agnostic, but still love both films, especially their music. I saw Neeley, Anderson, and Styx’s Dennis DeYoung do this on stage thirty years ago, all in top form. There is also a great JCS tribute album from a concert done at SXSW, with the Indigo Girls playing Jesus and Mary. It has my favorite version of Simon Zealot’s song, slowed to a jazzy tempo.

Oh wow! You're doing JC Superstar!!! Cool man. This is movie is from 1973 but the music is from 1970. They wanted to do the play but they ended up doing the soundtrack and releasing it so that the cash could bank the play. It was an enormous success but when the movie was made and hit the screens Jesus Christ Superstar became world renown. Carl Anderson as Judas stole the show. Yvonne Elliman playing Mary Madalein would later tour with Eric Clapton as one of his backing vocals and later still towards the end of the seventies had a enormous disco hit called If I Can't Have You. Ted Needly would meet and marry one of the dancers you see in the Simon Zealot (the guy that says 'Hey, cool it man!') moment of the story yet to come. Awaiting for part two.

I was in Junior High when the album came out. There was a tremendous amount of controversy around it. At Christmas my parents got it for myself and 5 siblings to share. We all loved it. It could be heard daily in our house😊

Thanks for the reaction, I hope they let it stay up. Ted Neely was a friend of my brother's (who was a badass lead guitar player), at that time. He met him through Bob Bingham (Caiaphas). Before JCSS there was Tommy. My brother's band was the pit band for the first staging of Tommy which occurred in Seattle, staged by the Seattle Opera in 1971. I don't know the exact chronology, but either Ted or Bob tried to get him into JCSS or my bro tried to get Bob into Tommy. Neither thing worked, but they stayed friends for many years.

We sang several selections from the play in high school chorus in ‘71. When the movie came out I saw it with my boyfriend and was sobbing at the end, much to my date’s embarrassment. So powerful.

SO **Excited** you are doing THIS!!! **MadCrush** on **Ted Neeley** ever since the 1st time i watched this film tho it did not become truly **Special** to me until i watched it on my own some years later cuz my best friend at the time was all hyped for me to see it & i was NOT ready for it at that time so when watched it alone some years later HOLY WoW that is when it hit me in just a whole different way & then later in my life i actually got to see **MyCutieTedNeeleyBabe** live in person performing it on stage & OHmygawd ahaha at the end when they came out for the bowing as they started to walk off i thought to myself OMG this IS my ONLY chance so i said to my sis "please do this with me" cuz i wanted to make sure it was loud enuff for him to actually hear it tho it was a smaller ish venue & she agreed so we both screamed "We Love You Ted Neeley" & OMG ahaha the whole audience turned to look at us like we were crazy BUT i did NOT care i was just focused on **Ted Neeley** and he gave us a **Big Smile** & **Waved** at us OMG i was sooo freakin **EcstaticHappyOverJoyed** it was just **Beautiful** OH & P.S. in the performance we saw **Judas** was played by **Living Colour** Lead Singer **Corey Glover** was **FantasticalSpectacularIncredible** just **Memory Of A Lifetime** **Thank YOU L33** so very MUCH for doing this once again! **ManyPixieHugz&LuvzALL**

This movie and Romeo and Juliet 1968 Zeffirelli are my favorite films of all time. I have been requesting these movies a lot. I haven’t watched your reaction yet. Just want you to know I’m spiritual but NOT religious. This is a movie that anyone can fall in love with. I hope fans haven’t turned it into a churchy movie because it’s not. I would have never gone to see it if it had that label. I’ve only seen the movie many times and one time Jesus and Judas came to Ventura theatre and they were both still as gorgeous as ever and sang beautifully. I absolutely love love love Mary Magdalene Yvonne Elliman!!!!!! “I don’t know how to love him” is total perfection.

I was in the 8th grade when the album was released, and our teacher played the entire double album set one day in class. It was stunning to hear. It was also a catalyst for the so-called Jesus Freak movement of the early 1970s.

@@lindalou6105 What a coincidence! I heard it while at a Catholic school as well. It was a lay teacher who played it for us, though. Don't know what our pastor thought of it, but my dad thought it was sacrilegious. Personally, I dug it!

A bit ironic, since this isn't a Christian work at all. The lyricist, Tim Rice, stated that he just concidered it to be a good story while he regarded e.g. Mahatma Gandhi a more admirable person than Jesus.

I used to work for a very religious woman who thought JCS was going to be sacrilegious but was pleasantly surprised that it isn't. It's the story of the passion 🤷‍♀️ I guess it's only sacrilegious to people who don't like to rock.

Carl Anderson died from throat cancer several years ago. The guy who played Pontus Pilate was also in a minor role in the movie Titanic ( when Leo and Kate are running to the stern of the ship, the man in front of them mumbling prayers who Leo tells to hurry it up). Ted Neeley is still going strong, he did a JCS reunion about 2 years back, his performance of Gethsemene was as well done and powerful as in the movie (He’s well into his 70s)

this movie is ICONIC.. I watch it every easter sunday.. the crucifixion story told to rock and roll- all from the book of Luke.. as a professional singer, I've always wanted to sing the role of Judas in this... "Heaven on my mind" tells the story of the doubt, and warning of how this story ends..this music is incredible- and allows the story to be transcendental.. this is my most favorite musical of all time...

The Temple Cleansing /Lepers scenes, sitting back to back and unified by the same tune set to completely different lyrics, form one of the peaks of both the film and the original album IMO.

The album came before the stage show. The recording features Deep Purple’s Ian Gilllan. The recording band was The Grease Band who had backed Joe Cocker at Woodstock 1969 festival.

It's so important to remember Yeshua (Jesus) was human, and that he felt and suffered as a human. His doubts and fears were very real, and he overcame them to sacrifice himself. I feel like people are afraid to see him as human, and it's the crux of what he did. I love Judas' questioning, because it's questions we realistically have. I follow Christ (I don't call myself Christian for many reasons), but as a follower, and fellow theologian, I appreciate the act of asking.

I love how Judas was portrayed in this movie. It's actually more accurate than most Churches portray him. They only focus on Judas being a traitor and betrayer. But in this movie it is clear his motivation is to help the poor and hungry. This is why the Gospels of Judas were kept out of the Bible by the Church, it contradicts the other accounts.

I know what you mean about not quite a proof of concept, and perhaps, a trial balloon, is more appropriate here. This was so out of the blue and I thought you know what I'm going to kick back and enjoy this. I haven't seen that movie much since grade school when I saw it in the theater and stayed for a second time and it was the first time I went by myself and I think I was in like 4th grade, and then I got in trouble for being home late for dinner. Combine that with being a musician and having even learned some of these and played it live in a group that was an assemblage of local musicians in the scene and working on this thing and doing their own tiny micro version of a Broadway band or something, laugh.

Jesus' life was the best-attested to biographical account in the ancient world by far. Within 30 years of his crucifixion, His work on the cross had changed the world, from Asia minor (modern Turkey) to Rome as far as ancient Britain where the Druids knew of him. He has appeared through visions to every known people in the world, including the American Indians. He is at the heart of all 5 major religious traditions (e.g., He is the Buddha Issa in the Far East). From Josephus, to the Roman leadership, to the early church, to the Assyrians (the first evangelists), to the eyewitness accounts, on and on. He lived and died ... for our sins. He was the Word made flesh. Thank you for this pioneering movie and your genuine comments. Yes, Jesus is my Lord, God and Savior. Thank you and God bless you!

Fun Facts: Barry Dennen (Pilate) lived with Barbra Streisand in the early 60's and was responsible for putting together her nightclub act that kicked off her career. He and Yvonne Elliman (Mary) are the only people to sing the same roles in the original album, original Broadway production, and this film. In the Zealots dance scene, the featured dancer with dark hair wearing dark grey pants and a brown bikini top is Leeyan Granger. She and Ted Neeley met on this set and have been together ever since (married over 40 years). Oh, and Paul Thomas (Peter) is a hall of fame producer and director. He chose to utilize his talents in XXX films.

Didn’t get to watch this movie until almost a decade ago but it ended up being epic as my local movie theatre was screening it and some of the movie cast were there (Kurt Yaghjian, Bob Bingham, Larry Marshall, the late Barry Dennen, and Ted Neeley were there) - it was such a fun experience and they were all really nice guys, especially Ted Neeley (the first thing he said to me when I met him was to compliment my smile 🥹) 🥰❤️ Have a soft spot for this movie as a result of that first time! ❤️

The part of Jesus was originally sung by Deep Purple's Ian Gillan, and he crafted it after his voice. Ted Neeley is not bad, but he remains a copy. Check out the original!

@@65alef As I said, he's not bad, but I still think Gillan is so much better, and the part is also adapted to Gillan's voice. But to each his own - if you prefer Neeley, go ahead and listen to him as much as you like! It would have been interesting to see the response if Gillan had been able to be in the movie

@@65alef That's right, we can't know for sure, but it's interesting to think what had happened if Gillan would have been able to accept the role in the film. Judging from the YT clip of Gillan singing Gethsemane, I think he would have done a good job. And his high screems have a grit and power that no one singing the role after him has been able to match IMO. Neeley's highs are a bit too thin and nasal for my taste. But as I said, to each his own…

My father was a Bing Crosby fan -- you know the type -- and he actually enjoyed seeing this in the movie theater! He liked the creative touches (fighter jets, etc.). To say I was shocked is an understatement. I enjoyed seeing it performed live at Cleveland Public Hall, the front rows filled with nuns. I can still hear the amazing opening guitar riff.

I LOVE that you're reacting to this!!! This is my FAVORITE musical of ALL\ time. 40 years of singing this and I still remember all of the words. I love that you are appreciating the vocals and music as well as how you are applying your religion from your childhood and how you view this content now. Can't wait to see the next installment!

So glad you’re getting into this incredible film! Been a definite favorite of mine since Mom took us to see it (As a double feature with the Beatles’, “Yellow Submarine”!), in its original release! We watched it every time it aired on TV for Easter, as well! Even went to see Ted Neeley (“Jesus”) & Carl Anderson- R. I. P (“Judas”) in their 1993 “Second Coming” tour performance of “JCS”, & even got backstage to meet them both! Since, Ted has been touring the country, often with the likes of Yvonne Elliman (“Mary”), Larry Marshal (“Simon”), Bob Bingham (“Caiaphas”), Kurt Yahjian (“Annas”), & others, having screenings, & meeting fans. (Just saw Ted & Yvonne at the Burbank “Hollywood Show”, again, last month.) Hope you enjoy the entire show, & if so, hope you’ll get to meet Ted, et al! 😁

I love this musical and they did a fantastic job on the movie.I like how it starts as a bunch of hippies going to the desert and im high spirits. The ending when it's over and a somber cast getting back on the bus to leave. I've seen the Broadway musical with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson as Jesus and Judas. One time Dennis DeYoung from Styx was playing the part Pontius Pilate. Could We Start Again Please is one of my favorite songs from this show.

I have watched the movie on TV and DVD and listened to the soundtrack on vinyl, cassette, and CD hundreds and hundreds of times through the years. There's a stage version from 2001 and the arena version released in 2012. I have all three versions (along with Godspell) on disk. It took me literal years to get used to the 2001 version, to NOT hear this 70s version. I think you should check those other two version to see how the time period can change the same movie with the same lyrics.
