Bobby Hatfield was a countertenor. A countertenor is a male singer who can sing as high as a soprano or mezzo-soprano. The countertenor is the rarest of all voice types. His vocal gymnastics on the song “Summertime” is something to behold.

Bobby Hatfield had the voice of an angel when he sang this song. He was a countor tenor with a 5 octave range. This is pure talant, pure vocals, no auto tune, no lip syncing. This is a love song and Bobby sang it with soulful feeling. This is not how his original recorded version goes. That recording was used in the movie, Ghost. On this particular performance ( which we are blessed to have through the taping of tv shows) it was Bobby wanting to show the viewers his vocal range. He had wanted to show more of his range on his recorded version but was told it was perfect as it was. It was the B side of a 45 record, but once a radio D.J. played it, other stations started playing it too and the A side got little playing time. Bobby was nervous on this show as The Andy Williams Show was a huge weekly tv show with an audience of over 1 million tv viewers (at the time. In the 60's not everyone had a tv, especially in rural areas, and in most places people were limited to 2-3 stations; unlike people who lived in metro.areas who had 5-7 channels) plus being in front of a live audience, where you had to be perfect ; no second takes. He had a cold and his mother was in the audience. ( no pressure there, right) Bobby nailed it! You can see the expression on his face that didn't change until near the end where he smiled to himself because he knew he was killing it......and the lip bite when he finished. Notice too there was no face wrinkling to hit the high notes; its like he wasn't even trying to hit them. Elvis wouldn’t want a “pity” vote. It’s Bobby Hatfield all the way on this one. And that is not taking away from other versions that were beautiful. It’s just that Bobby Hatfield and this song were a once in a lifetime thing. His vocal range is extremely rare. 🥰

This song was actually made for a movie called unchained. The movie is centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family.

Hundreds of singers have sung this song but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the movie 'Ghost 'and was great but this live version is stupendous. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. He had a cold at the time, his parents were in ther audience watching him sing live for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. Notice that when he sings the high notes at the end he does not contort his face as other singers do when hitting a high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say I nailed it.

This gives me chills no matter how many times I hear it.

I heard these guys perform it first, and I still haven't heard a version that evokes the same emotion as the Bros.

This was released in the 1960s during a long war and many soldiers related to the feeling of separation from a loved one that this song portrays.

Over 670 artists recorded this song worldwide. I don’t have to hear them all to know Bobby will always own it and I love Elvis. When I shut my art room door I listen to all of Elvis’s Gospel music because it was his first and main love. His voice changes and it is beautiful. I also listen to the Righteous Brothers, they are both amazing and I grew up to this version of the song plus all of their others. They were called Blue Eyed Soul and every woman was in love with those voices. This song will always be timeless. Thank you and I loved your reaction.

The song was originally in a 1950's prison movie ("Unchained") but it was the Righteous Brothers who popularized it. Their songs "Soul & Inspiration" and a live rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" are simply fantastic. Remember - no autotune, no backing tracks, no ridiculous studio polishing. This was the Master at work. Both men had amazing, unique voices and when they performed together it was magic. There weren't enough piano keys for what they were capable of, especially Bobby Hatfield. He wouldn't even break a sweat when he was inventing new notes like in his version of "Summertime". They had great hits, many featured in movies, but don't miss out on their live R&B performances on the old Shindig Show videos. Their personalities, versatility and energy were captivating. You might even catch a prank or two that will have you laughing. Thank you for recognizing the greatness of this legend.

A beautifully chilling performance to check out is the music video of Johnny Cash covering "Hurt", a song written and recorded by Trent Reznor of the Nine Inch Nails way back in the darkest depths of Trent's drug use. Johnny Cash recorded it less than a year before he died, and it was the last video he ever did. When Reznor heard Cash's version, he was blown away, and now he says it's Johnny's song. Reznor has since covered Cash's version. In the video, you'll see Cash's wife, who died just a few months later. He passed less than six months later. When Cash's daughter heard the song, she told him it sounded like he said goodbye, and he replied, "I did." It may be the greatest cover of any song in history. RIP to the legend Cash.

This was my mom & dad's song. They were together for 55 years, until my dad passed in 2009 from cancer. He was a US Navy fighter pilot for 27 years and they were apart (dad at sea) for half their married life until he retired in 1977. I know they are slow dancing (or making love) to this in heaven.

That's a real soul singer...he feels what he's singing and can make you feel it with him. Both the Righteous Brothers had that gift - they could solo like this or blend their voices in magical harmony. Their 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling' was the most played record of the 20th century. 'Soul and Inspiration' was another #1 for them, 'I Just Wanna Make Love to You' was considered too hot for most radio play. Their earliest hits like 'Little Latin Lupe Lu' and 'My Babe' were just plain fun to dance to. The switching you hear is him jumping up and down between head voice and chest voice....sometimes called a yodel...and isn't an easy technique ...🙂

As fantastically awesome as that performance was, IMO there's only one other song by them that's a must-see, and they both sing (You've lost that Lovin' Feelin')

Cliff, the Righteous Brothers, was my Mums favourite along with Roy Orbison. She was born in 1940 and hated the Beatles! She passed in 2010 and I like her, love lyrics that tell stories, not just catchy songs! Side Note - the host introducing them - Andy Williams = was an adored singer in the day. He did sing with his brothers but then developed a wonderful solo career. He was a star. I think Moon River is probably the song he is best known for. Definitely worth listening to Moon River - it was omnipresent for years

The RIghteous Brothers version was in Ghost. I love these 2 together, they were great! Austin Brown's (of Home Free, it's on his channel, austin brown music) version is absolutely beautiful too, Home Free took it a bit more back to the roots of the song.

This song & Bobby Hatfield's incredible vocals & live performance of it belongs to Bobby Hatfield/Righteous Brothers and it was a hit again after they re-recorded it after the movie Ghost came out 25 years later. Many, many people have sung this song but the standard they try to attain to is the most listened to Righteous Brothers version. Elvis Presley loved the Righteous Bros. music, would go to their show after his Vegas show & became friends with them...especially Bill Medley. It doesn't surprise me he would sing one of his favorite songs by the Righteous Brothers. As others mentioned, check out their Shin Dig TV show performances together of "You Lost That Loving Feeling" and Bobby doing a solo of "Summertime". Bill's solo after that is "Old Man River". Their Hula baloo TV show performance is next of "Soul and Inspiration". Then watch them sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" on the Ed Sullivan TV show. You'll be wowed hearing recordings of baritone Bill taking lead singing his bluesy song "I Want To Make Love To You" and the record "Ebbtide" by Bobby. His amazing voice paints an emotion. Bill had a solo hit "Brown Eyed Woman" that I really like. He performs it with the group The Blossoms backing him up on the TV show Playboy After Dark. We are lucky that The Righteous Brothers have so many videos from being regulars on the Shin dig TV show from 1964-1966 & a library of recordings. They were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of fame in 2003. Yes sir, written in 1955 for a PRISON MOVIE titled "Unchained." This song was the only(?) tune in the movie so it was later titled, simply, "Unchained Melody." Tony Bennett's song of renown was "[I Left My Heart in] San Francisco." Fantastic scalar range, breath control, clarity of diction, stage presence, and emotion all rolled into one performance for near perfection! A song of doubt, longing, hope, and love. The version used in "Ghost" can't hold a candle to this live TV broadcast version (1965). Glad you're into older tunes such as this!

The Tony Bennett reference refers to an old old school crooner from the 50s and 60s. Tony Bennett sang a lot of very famous and well-loved songs. While he was old school, he became part of the new school singing with Christina Aguilera and doing two albums with Lady Gaga along with touring with her. He and Lady Gaga performed together at Radio City Music Hall and I believe they performed at the Grammys too. "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" might be his most famous song but "Rags to Riches" and "Fly Me To The Moon" are some of his many hits.
