I love Simple Minds, actually saw them live some weeks ago for the first time (I had to come a long way until I was lucky enough to see them) and it was fantastic. It was their 40 year anniversary tour which had been postponed for two years due to Covid and they played all their hits and more. Almost everything they did from their beginning in the 70s up until the end of the 80s was pure gold. They still made good records after that, but my heart belongs to their post-punk, new romantic and new wave stuff between 1979 and 1985. This lineup here in the video with Mel Gaynor on drums, Derek Forbes on bass, Michael MacNeil on keyboards and of course Charlie Burchill on guitars and Jim Kerr on vocals was the best one they had in my opinion.

So glad your doing a reaction to these guys not enough reactions to this amazing band, CHECK OUT ‘Belfast Child’ I love your comment about Bono they were often compared musically in the 80’s you have a good handle on that! Simple Minds have so many great songs that helped shape the sound of the eighties. My biggest recommendation would be New Gold Dream (81, 82, 83, 84), such a wonderful piece that sounds like the perfect blend of Duran Duran, U2 and Sister of Mercy. Would also love to see you react to some New Beat. It was a slower electronic underground genre fusing elements of New Wave, EBM and Acid House, that took Western European clubs by storm in the late eighties but soon became so commercial it imploded, transitioning into the hard house and techno scene of the nineties. Some recommendations: Miss Nicky Trax - Acid in the House, Acts of Madmen - The Dream and Amnesia - Ibiza.

Simple Minds have been an amazing team for longer than before I was even born. They've released many best-of compilations; the pick of which could be their 1992 CD 'Glittering Prize '81-'92'. Their 2002 album 'Cry' was a superb cocktail of traditional acoustic/electric guitars and electronics/synths. But there's so much more to them; and like Depeche's 101 tour in 1988, Simple Minds' 1986 'LIVE: In The City Of Light' recording showcased just how awesome a team they were - and still are.

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on Simple Minds. It's true, you're right, like you I thought it was a U2 song then the male singer has the same intonations as BONO when I was listening! This song "Alive & Kicking" was released on September 30, 1985 as the first single from their eighth album "Once Upon A Time" and ranked No.33 in the French TOP 50. It's their second hit after "Don'T You (Forget About Me)" released a few months earlier which made them known worldwide. The music video, directed by Zbigniew Rybczyński, is filmed entirely on location in the Catskill Mountains in New York State. We see the group playing the song, accompanied by backing female vocalist Robin Clark. For your next react, I recommend you their huge hit "Don'T You (Forget About Me)" always in 1985 (the year you were born! 😉) and "Mandela Day" (1989), another great success! Didn't Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill meet at primary school? My friend was a massive fan , and took me to see them in Glasgow c1990 so for once Dereck you are reviewing a band I have seen live ! Wish you would do Stereophonics now , I saw them in Edinburgh !

I love this song! And yes, they were a little similar to U2 at this point. Also, that is a LOT of shoulder pads!

I don't know why it did so badly in France. I remember this song very well at that time. For me it did well in France contrary to Dereck's statistics, but maybe my memory is influenced by the Belgium radios where the hit reached the 2nd place.

while more and more music is coming back sounding very close to the 80s - this piece of great music shows another difference from todays produced music and the 80s. A long intro, a song which is growing more and more, a kind of break after more then 3 and a half minutes and a song which is ultimately exploding once again... today every producer would cut the song after 3:15...

I was living in France in 1985 obsessed with Simple Minds whom I saw live twice that year, dancing my head off to Alive and Kicking and that thing stayed at no 1 for weeks! No 33 are you kidding me? Lol

I have the same feeling that they performed way better than rank #33. I heard this song a lot on the french radios in m memories.. or was it on the Belgium radios (I lived on the border), because the song was 2nd in Belgium charts for sure.

Yes it must have climbed to no1 or 2 all over Europe. I wonder if Dereck is looking at chart rankings of albums rather than singles

I enjoyed the group a lot back in the day. But I always thought the singer looked like a Fraggle. In a cute way. Lol.

If you do more Simple Minds, I have 2 recommendations for you .. For a well known song, "Don't You Forget About Me" is a must .. A classic for sure .. For a lesser known song, try "The American" .. It puts you in a trance with its relentlessly mesmerising rhythm and chorus melody line .. A hidden gem !
